Everyday Ubuntu Linux
I took the plunge and decided to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my little Acer Aspire One 532 H. Most everything is working OK, except there are some mouse/touhpad issues that are fairly well documented. It seems that the suspend while typing function on the touchpad is not working properly. The workaround is to use Fn-F7 to disable the touchpad manually if you want to get down to some serious typing. The multi-touch features and the scrollbar is also not working either. Searching around the forums, there seems to be some intricate solutions around, but maybe I will just wait for it to get into a release.
The install went smoothly and only took about 15 minutes. I decided to keep Windows 7 and dual boot into Ubuntu. The only change from the default install that I made was to make the Ubuntu partition a little larger then the Windows 7 partition. Windows 7 is OK, but the pre-installed antivirus software annoyed me when it asked to me to re-boot my computer, right when I was on a roll in getting some real work done. This is just the sort of thing that always irked me when using Windows in the past, when third party software wants to reboot your machine, while you are in the middle of getting some work done. So, now Windows 7 is treading on thin ice and may still yet get wiped off this little netbook.
Everything else seems to be working OK. There is a known SD card issue, and I have not tried out the microphone. That should be an issue too. The sleep works fine while depressing Fn-F4. The wireless works OK out of the box, but it does seem to drop out randomly, then reconnect. The hot-key to turn it on and off does not work. You can turn wireless on and off manually, though.

xubuntu 11.10 on Acer Aspire One 532h
Hi all,
I am new to the linux/ubuntu world, and I am looking to ditch the clunky windows 7 Starter on my netbook, which is an Acer Aspire One 532h. It has an Intel Atom N450 CPU, which wikipedia leads me to believe is based on 64-bit architecture and uses (U)EFI, specifically the InsydeH2O version. The netbook has no disc drive, and I don’t want to buy a drive just to install ubuntu.
I am trying to put xubuntu 11.10 on here, and having no luck. I tried using both LiLi and Pendrive to make a bootable USB flash, and I set the BIOS ( or whatever the term for that is ) to boot from USB. When I start up the computer, the screen flashes a line of text saying something about syslinux, goes green for a second, and then all I see is a flashing underscore in the corner and nothing happens.
The netbook has three options to boot from USB: USB HDD, USB CD-ROM, and USB FDD. Process of elimination tells me that it is booting the flash drive as an FDD.
I have tried compiling the boot drive with both 32-bit and 64-bit xubuntu with no luck; it wont ever boot.
I tried searching for how to install ubuntu on an EFI system, but I am still confused as to why it wont boot on my netbook. I really need to get it ready to go by Friday, so all help is appreciated!

Re: xubuntu 11.10 on Acer Aspire One 532h
I had a similar situation when I made a bootable USB with Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 1 — and the PC refused to boot into a desktop.
So, having made the USB using unetbootin, I remade it using Pendrive. And this time, it booted.
Then recently, I did the same thing again using 12.04 Alpha 2, and this time, unetbooting made the working USB, and the Pendrive version failed.
So, it looks like the «bootable USB installer» stuff is very hit-and-miss.

Since you’re installing on a netbook, may I recommend Lubuntu as an alternative to standard Ubuntu? I never was much a fan of Lubuntu or LXDE, until I installed it on a friend’s netbook, which I’ve been using for the past month or so, and I am extremely impressed. It runs really fast and smooth on the (rather) low-spec hardware, is modern and intuitive, and really works good with the small screen. I used Lili USB creator to make a bootable flash drive in Windows, and it booted and installed flawlessly the first time.

I am about to buy an Acer Aspire One AO532H netbook and I wanted to know if there are any incompatibility issues with Ubuntu. I need to buy it rather quickly so I would need to know soon.

Re: Acer Aspire One AO532H Ubuntu Support
I have an Acer Aspire One AO532h — as a matter of fact, I’m typing this reply on it right now. It’s a great little netbook, and it runs Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 with no problems that I have noted. I’m using a wireless internet connection and have no issues, the display works great, the sound is fine, and for such a small computer, it feels really responsive under Ubuntu (I can’t say the same for Windows 7 Starter, which is what the computer was loaded with when I first got it — it was really terrible, so I wiped the whole hard drive and am only using Ubuntu).
Two caveats, though: first, the media card reader is not recognized by Ubuntu, at least not out of the box. Also, although everything is working fine, I do have an issue where the computer will suddenly sometimes say that there is no battery life remaining, and that it has to suspend. It will do this even with a full, freshly-charged battery. However, I just wait a couple seconds and press a key on the keyboard to wake it up, and then I can continue working as normal without the problem recurring. Search around the forums for more reports of this issue on this particular netbook; I’m not sure what causes it, and I’m not convinced that it is bothersome enough for me to try and dig around in the system to fix it.
Overall, it’s a great fit for Ubuntu, so go ahead and get one!

Like nbaes, I’m also using an Acer Aspire One 532h. I wiped out win7 starter too . uggg! I have the same issue with the battery indicator. I’ll suddenly get a message that the battery is critically low and the computer is about to hibernate, which it does. I then reboot and all is fine again.
I also notice that the battery indicator seems to go down really fast. I can be fully charged and within a few hours down to nothing. When I still had win7 on it, it would indicate I had 8 hours (or more) of battery life. Not sure if that was wishful thinking on the part of windows or if my battery is now being sucked on more.
But other than this, Ubuntu is working great!! I would recommend it.
