Acer Nitro 5 graphics drivers problems [SOLVED]

Post by feralhound » Mon Sep 20, 2021 9:59 am

I’m somewhat puzzled by this. My daughter just purchased an Acer Nitro 5 laptop, and I obligingly installed Linux (Mint 20.2) on it. However, I could only install using «Compatibility Mode», and after installation I had to alter the grub file to continue this. However, after installing the Nvidia drivers (through the drivers panel) the machine would not display the login screen after boot. All that appeared was a non-blinking cursor in the upper left of the screen. I could use ctrl-alt-F2 to get to a console, installed openssh-server, and went through several cycles of sudo apt purge nvidia* (after which the computer would boot normally) and upgrading the kernel, etc.

I would be confident that the hardware is just too new except that I finally succeeded in installing Ubuntu 20.04 Mate on the machine, and then installing the Nvidia drivers.

inxi -Fxz from the working Ubuntu install is as follows:

I would need to attach an external drive to play around with this any more at this point, since my daughter is content to use Ubuntu, but my personal preference is for Mint, and I’m puzzled as to why I could get it to work with Ubuntu but not with Mint.

How to install Nitro 5 Sense using Wine in Linux?

Hello Acer community, since last year I have been facing this problem where after installing any linux system on my nitro 5 the fans would run at full speed even if the CPU is 35~40 degrees C. I looked up this issue and found that others use this application known as NBFC ( Notebook Fan Controller). I went ahead with installing the app but when I booted back to my windows system the Nitro sense app completely stopped working. Even un-installing and installing a fresh copy of Nitro sense wasn’t solving it. Fortunately I had created a system restore point before and the nitro sense app started working fine after I restored my system but, I had to stop using NBFC and I removed the app completely which resulted in fans being really loud and running at full speed. I know Wine exists but I don’t know the correct procedure to install nitro sense app using Wine. I almost gave up hope in this but I thought if anyone from the community might tell a possible solution so I came here. Please let me know if there are any solutions to this.

My machine specs: Intel core i5 9300H, GTX 1650 ,16GB RAM and model is Acer Nitro 5 2019.

Two possibilities. First, locate the Windows subdirectory for the NitroSense executable. Copy the whole NitroSense sub-directory into your Linux home or desktop directory. Then try to run the NitroSense executable under WINE.

Second, go to this link. Enter your Nitro 5’s full model number. For example, AN515-54. Then download the NitroSense app zip file. Decompress the zip file with archive manager. If the decompressed file has a setup.EXE executable, try to install NitroSense under WINE.

WINE is getting much better at running many Windows apps. I use it frequently under Mint for many of my preferred Windows apps.

Okay, I installed wine on Ubuntu and when I run the Setup.exe from the extracted folder of Nitro Sense zip file I get this dialog box which says » Sorry! This operating system is not supported. «

There is a Setup.exe.config file present in the extracted folder. would modifying any value in it solve this issue ?

You should be able to access the Windows NTFS system partition from inside Linux. Locate the Windows subdirectory that has the NitroSense executable (not nitrosense setup.exe).

Then copy and paste the whole Windows NitroSense sub-directory, into a Linux home or desktop directory. Then try to run the NitroSense.EXE under WINE.

Alright! I have Windows installed on an SSD and the ubuntu on a portable Hard Drive. I will google up how I can access windows NTFS system partition from linux. Apart from this I have found that the Nitro Sense folder is located in C:Program Files\Acer\Nitro Sense. Should I just copy that whole folder to a USB drive and then paste it in my linux home directory ?

Because some of the options in NitroSense app might sometimes need to interact with the BIOS, there is a possibility that not all the options that function in a Windows environment will do so in a WINE overlay even if the NitroSense GUI appears. Good luck.

So here is what I did, After installing wine I opened wine by typing winecfg in the terminal, set up the windows directory , copied and pasted the Nitro Sense folder exactly like it is on windows ( in ubuntu its home/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Acer/Nitro Sense.) There are multiple .exe files. I’m really not sure which one opens the app. Take a look at the screenshot below and let me know if I’m missing any crucial step. PSLauncher.exe doesn’t open when I try to open it with Wine.

Can you access the Windows ProgramFiles folder from the Linux environment? There’s subfolders WindowsApp has the Acer Incorporated subfolder to the actual NItroSense.exe executable that set the whole app in motion. Use the Linux search function to look for nitrosense.exe to locate the precise directory. It also may have more Windows dlls and image subfolders. Copy the whole subfolder with the nitrosense.exe executable & dlls. & images.

[GUIDE] Installing Linux on Nitro 5 (AN515-42)

sri369

I installed Ubuntu 16 on my Nitro 5 laptop on an external SSD connected via USB 3 enclosure. This helps keep my Linux separate from my Windows drives, and since the external disk is an SSD connected on USB 3 port, it is pretty fast too. Linux on my box booted up from cold start to login screen in under 10 seconds and another 5 seconds post login to desktop screen.

I have put in the process I followed with screenshots with detail as necessary accompanying them. I did this process on my Nitro itself under Windows 10.

Download and install Linux Live USB creator software. The one I used is —> https://www.linuxliveusb.com

Install the software, and open it up.

Select the target USB drive (I used 32 GB usb 3.0 thumb drive on usb 3.0 port), select linux distribution (I downloaded ubunto 16 LTS version from ubuntu site, and pointed to its ISO).
Select the option to format the thumb drive to FAT32.

In BIOS, enable to option to show F12 menu.
Connect the SSD (to a USB port) to which you want to install Linux to (it would be better to remove all partitions from this for easy identification during install).
Connect the Live USB on another port and start the system, and use F12 to get to the boot menu.
In the menu, select the Linpus lite and hit ENTER. This will take start the system off USB and not the hard disk.

In the options presented, select «Install Ubuntu».

Select language.

Select keyboard layout.

I didn’t want to connect to any WiFi during install to keep it simple.

Pick «Normal installation».

VERY IMPORTANT STEP
Pick the installation type as «Something else» to install to our SSD and not to any internal hard disks.

VERY IMPORTANT STEP
1. Your existing hard disks would also be listed here, along with the SSD.
2. Make sure to select the SSD disk (leaving the system without partitions helps identify it here — since you will find something under /dev/sd* with «free space»).
You can also know what disk to pick if you look towards the bottom where it says «device for boot loader installation». It would show the connection type, space and device name.
3. Do NOT touch any disks with Windows Boot Manager (this would be the disk with Windows on it, and you wouldn’t want to alter it).
4. IMPORTANT Select your SSD for bootloader installation (this will not write any GRB entries to windows disk essentially keeping entire Linux to SSD in its entirety).
5. After making selections click on «install now».
6. Post installation, shut down Linux.

Remove the Live USB from USB 3 port.
Connect the SSD to the USB 3 port (leave it as it is if it is already on USB 3 port; I had to change since Nitro 5 came with only one USB 3).
Boot up laptop and click F12 to get to the boot menu.
Select ubuntu and click Enter.

When the system starts up, select Ubuntu and hit Enter.

Ubuntu is now up and running

Acer Nitro 5 Linux Installation

You can do the dualboot! Ideally, you first install windows and then install linux! Also, since the bios is in uefi mode, you should convert the pendrive to gpt like this:

Then download an iso only x64 from linux! Remember that some versions of linux do not recognize sata mode in «rst with optane». You should select ahci mode, but this will cause the array to be broken!
