Getting AMD Radeon HD 8330 graphics to work

Hi, I have a laptop with an AMD A4 APU, with Radeon HD 8330 graphics. I just installed Mint 15. When I boot up I get this message:
So when I go to Hardware Drivers there are 2 proprietary drivers available, fglrx and fglrx-updates. I have tried both but what happens is when I reboot after the loading screen I get a plain black screen, sometimes with a flashing underscore in the top corner.
If I reboot in the the previous kenel version it does load. But the catalyst control center is weird, I can’t change resolution or anything, see below. I don’t want to use this kerne version because there is no wifi driver compiled for it. But I can use it change back to the default open source drivers and reboot into the newer kernel.
This is what happens when I try opening control center immediately after installing the driver and before rebooting:

Maybe I should try the download from the AMD website? I thought the one through Driver Manager would be better.

Just replying with a few comments .
1) fglrx-updates driver: for no explained reasons, these practically NEVER work! However, the first selection usually does work.
2) Messages after driver install before reboot: What you’re seeing is normal as the new drivers are not loaded until you reboot. After you reboot, you should get different info from «fglrxinfo» indicating the drivers are installed and working.
3) The Driver Manager is usually the best choice as those have been packaged to work with the OS version — but the newer ones from the AMD site could work better, especially if they have been upgraded to fix bugs with the earlier versions.

Well after the driver installed I ran the commands and got this:

Hello,
I’m configuring mint 16 in on a friend’s Acer Aspire E1-522 with an AMD Radeon HD 8330.
After the installation I installed the normal fglrx driver (not the update ones) from the Drivers Manager GUI.
Afre reboot I deleted (actually I moved it to have a backup) /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and restarted mdm service.
Now X is working fine and ’till now no problems, quality seems good.
To setup the card I’m using the catalyst center running
I selected the non-tearing option too.
I’ll test a 108p movie soon and I’ll tell you.

Hi, I am new to the forums, but I had seen your question/problem. And it helped me install my system, so I wanted to pay it forward.
And just installed kali linux on my e1-522-5659 with the Radeon HD 8330. And I hope you can expect to have sucess following my advice.
1. Set the bios to boot in «legacy» not «UEFI» and run the linux(mint,kali, ect) installer. Unless you have completed this step. Skip to step2.
2. At the GRUB MENU select «compatibility-mode» And log in using the default drivers.
3. Make sure your connected to internet. At the compatibility desktop, open mozilla, or IW browser. Navigate to www.amd.com
3. Click driver/support. navigate to driver.
4. Fill out the form,select mobile card, HD series 8XXX, on OS specs specify 32 or 64 bit. and click find options.
4.2. Uninstall previous drivers except the default gflrx, if you had attempted to install previous.
5. Select the «beta» drivers from the drop-down list (it supports the HD 8**X series graphics drivers.) Download & Install, using the grphx install mode.
6. reboot, enjoy.
~~note: if you have already attempted to install other drivers, you WILL need to uninstall them before your fresh install of the «Beta» amd drivers, or you will run into compatibility issues.~~

Hi, I’m having these same issues but I am unfamiliar with the nomenclature you are using and the installation methods you talk about. I have the beta driver from the AMD site on my desktop so could somebody, in SIMPLE Texas English , explain the procedure to me? Or send me a link that does? Thanks, to All. Mark

It’s easiest to install from command line, open a terminal and where it says «yourname@yourcomputer:» and a blinking cursor, «sudo apt-get install fglrx fglrx-amdcccle» will get the driver installed with the Catalyst Control Center. When it gets done, sudo reboot.
If you don’t have the desktop running, «sudo apt-get install fglrx fglrx-amdcccle» and when it’s done reboot.
sudo tells the system you want to install with admin privileges you’ll be asked for your password.

Некоторые версии Intel Atom (N2xxx, D2xxx) имеют встроенный GPU сторонней фирмы PowerVR (GMA 3600/3650), к которым нужен закрытый и не поддерживаемый драйвер, требующий старых ядер и ОЧЕНЬ старых версий MESA, то есть полностью несовместимый с ArchLinux. Если же использовать его БЕЗ этого неудобоваримого блоба, вы не получите не то, что игр, а даже 2D-ускорения, даже XV для видео не получите – только vesa или голый fbdev.
Так что увидев заветное слово «Intel», ещё рано расслабляться, засада как всегда оказывается неожиданной 🙂
Отктрытые драйверы плохо поддерживают видеокарты >= HD 7000. Они работают но 3D ускорения нет!
Сильно сомневаюсь что на HD 8000 вообще заработают! (хотя может я и неправ) Так как видеокарты эти только вышли.
Catalyst Другое дело. Ставим кофигурируем и наслаждаемся! Но тут тоже могут быть проблемы. Закрытые драйверы не успевают обновлятся за арчем. (сильно часто в Арче обновляют ядро) Тут вам поможет Catalyst-hook

Ты же знаешь, что не совсем прав. В полемику вступать не собираюсь.
Каждый выбирает взависимости от своих потребностей и требований. Лично меня Intel вполне устраивает, но я его никому не навязываю. Я высказал свое мнение.
Какой наезд? Я просто делюсь негативным опытом.
Прошлым летом мы с другом на пару лопухнулись, и купившись на волшебное слово «Intel», схватили, не разобравшись, на свою голову этот самый Intel Atom со встроенным GPU от PowerVR, он же GMA3600, к которому не подходит интеловский драйвер, а проприетарный давно брошен и несовместим в Арч.
Отсюда мораль – Intel ещё НЕ значит, то там интеловская графика, интеловский драйвер и никаких проблем. Всё равно надо всегда выяснять, что там «под капотом» в каждом конкретном случае. Разумеется, это относится не только к Intel.

Чтобы не было проблем, на ATI надо ставить свободные драйвера. Ведь в игрульки играть не требуется, да? Только чёрт его знает, держут ли opensource дрова эти ваши 8xxx. Они вроде называются Sea Islands, а на страничке в вики есть только Southern, Northern и какие-то C. Ну, думаю, гитовская версия точно держит, только неизвестно с какой эффективностью.
У меня Радеон 7950 — на свободных дровах жутко греется карта — в простое 65-70 градусов. Ставлю проприетарные с оффсайта АМД, так как блобы жутко кривые и нужно писать костыль под них. Единственная проблема — перед установкой нового ядра, нужно просто удалить драйвер, а потом просто установить по новой. Зато температура в простое 35-37 градусов.
