Run Android APKs on Chrome OS, OS X, Linux and Windows.

Now supports OS X, Linux and Windows

See the Custom ARChon runtime guide to run apps on other operating systems besides Chrome OS.

• Download an official app, such as Evernote, from the Chrome Web Store.
• Then download this open source game: 2048.APK Game by Uberspot and load it as an unpacked extension. Go to chrome://apps and launch it there, ignore warnings.

Setup for Chrome OS / App Conversion

Conversion Tool Tested on OS X, Windows and Ubuntu. You can also convert APKs manually.

• Install a sample Android app from the Chrome Store to get the runtime. Test out that app, make sure it runs on your hardware.
• (Ubuntu might need sudo apt-get install lib32stdc++6 )
• Install Node.js (via http://nodejs.org/)
• Install the tool (might need a sudo prefix):

npm install chromeos-apk -g 

sudo npm install chromeos-apk -g 

Run chromeos-apk [path to apk file]

chromeos-apk com.soundcloud.android.apk 

chromeos-apk com.soundcloud.android.apk --tablet 

This will generate a directory for you, i.e com.soundcloud.android . Copy this directory to your Chromebook. On your Chromebook go to chrome://extensions , enable «Developer mode», and load the directory using the «Load unpacked extension» button.

Make sure Android applications are compatible with your Chromebook, first try to install an official application such as Vine: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/vine/plfjlfohfjjpmmifkbcmalnmcebkklkh

If you get a Failed to parse package name in the APK. error, then you will have to type it the proper package name for the application. You can find out the package name by looking at the URL of the app in the Play Store.

Chrome OS: With Chrome 38+ you can now side load as many applications as you want. If you have older apps that were created using chromeos-apk tool then re-convert them or remove the «key» option from manifest.json .

Windows, Linux and OS X: To load unlimited number of apps on you need a custom runtime, see the ARChon runtime guide for details.

How to Install Android Apps on Ubuntu using ARChon (Updated)

Vlad Filippov‘s chromeos-apk script and ARChon Android Runtime extension work hand-in-hand to bring Android apps to Chrome on the Windows, Mac and Linux desktop.

Performance of apps through the runtime is not fantastic. Any ambitions of running Dead Trigger 2 or other graphically intensive games should be put to one side.

Similarly, being both an unofficial repackaging of the official runtime and running outside of Chrome OS, system integration (e.g., webcam, speakers, etc.) may be patchy or non-existent.

The guide that follows is provided as-is, and without any guarantees of success. It should be considered highly experimental, buggy, unstable – possibly even flat out evil. Try it out of curiosity rather than heightened expectation and you should be fine.

How to Run Android Apps on Linux

To run Android apps on Linux through Chrome you will need, obviously, to install Chrome. Version 37 or higher is required. Honestly, if you’re going to be playing with a potentially unstable hack then you might as well download and install the unstable version of Google Chrome for Linux, too.

Already got a version of Chrome installed? You can install the Dev Channel version via the command line by running:

sudo apt-get install google-chrome-unstable

Next you need to download the custom-made — ergo officially not endorsed by Google or Chromium — Android Runtime created by Vlad Filippov. This differs from the official version in a number of ways, the chief being it can be used on desktop versions of the browser.

Once the runtime has fully downloaded you will need to extract the contents from the .zip files and move the resulting directory to ~/Home.

Now to install ARChon. Open Google Chrome and click the hamburger menu. Navigate through to the Tools > Extensions page and, near the top, check ‘Enable developer mode’.

Finally, click on the ‘load unpacked extension’ button and select the folder you previously placed into ~/Home.

The Runtime alone doesn’t do much by itself so you will need to create a compatible package from an Android app.

There are several ways to do this: either manually, on your desktop, or using a free Android app. We’re covering the manual method below, but OMG! Chrome! has a great walkthrough of using a desktop app called ‘Twerk’, and the Archon Packager tool for mobile.

The Manual Way (Not Recommended)

To convert APKs manually — something you really don’t need to do any more if you use one of the apps mentioned above — you will need to install the ‘chromeos-apk’ command line JavaScript utility. This is available to install through the Node Packaged Modules (npm) manager.

sudo apt-get install npm nodejs nodejs-legacy

Ubuntu 64 user? You’ll want to grab the following library, too:

sudo apt-get install lib32stdc++6

Now run the command to install the script itself:

npm install -g chromeos-apk

Depending on your configuration you may need to need to run this latter command as sudo. If you’d prefer not to install npm modules with sudo, you can do so with some jiggery-pokery.

Now you’re in the home straight. Head over to Google to find an APK of an app you want to try out, bearing in mind not all Android apps will work, and those that do may be unstable or lack features.

Place your wanted Android APK in ~/Home, then return to Terminal to convert it using the following command, replacing the APK name with the one you want:

chromeos-apk replaceme.apk --archon

The command will take a few seconds to do its thing. Maybe have a blink. Actually, don’t blink.

You now have an ARChon-rocking Chrome APK extension-y folder-y thing waiting in your Home folder. All that’s left to do is install it to see if it works!

Head back into the chrome://extensions page, tap the ‘load unpacked extension’ button once again but this time select the folder the script above created.

The app should proceed to install without issue, but will it run without issue? Open the Chrome App Launcher or Apps Page and launch it to find out.

Going Further

Since the ARChon runtime supports an unlimited number of Chromified APKs you can repeat the process as many times as you like. The Chrome APK subreddit is keeping track of success/failures, so if you’re feeling helpful be sure to post your findings there.

Скрипт chromeos-apk Влада Филипова, вместе с расширением ARChon Android Runtime сделали возможным запуск Android приложений в браузере Chrome на Windows, Mac и Linux ПК.

Приложения работают не очень гладко через расширение. А уж о попытках запустить Dead Trigger 2 или какие-либо другие требовательные игры следует вовсе забыть.

Также, поскольку это неофициальный репак официального расширения и запускается он вне системы Chrome OS, системный функционал (например веб камера, динамики и т.д.) будет не доступен.

Данная инструкция является достаточно экспериментальной, поэтому не дает никаких гарантий. Можете потешить свое любопытство и последовать ей, но не стоит возлагать больших надежд.

Как запустить Android приложения на Linux

Для того, чтобы вы смогли запустить Android приложения на Linux через Chrome, вам естественно понадобится сам браузер Chrome. Версия должна быть 37 или выше.

Уже установлена нужная версия Chrome? Тогда вы можете установить версию для разработчиков через командную строку:

sudo apt-get install google-chrome-unstable

Теперь вам необходимо установить пользовательское расширение — не имеющую официального статуса и непризнанную компанией Google или Chromium — Android Runtime, созданное Владом Филипповым. Оно сильно отличается от официальной версии, главным образом тем, что его можно устанавливать в версиях браузера для ПК.

Когда расширение скачается, вам нужно будет разархивировать содержимое в папку ~/Home.

Теперь устанавливаем ARChon. Откройте Google Chrome и зайдите в меню. Выберите раздел Инструменты > Расширения и, сверху, поставьте галочку ‘Включить режим разработчика’.

И в конце, нажмите кнопку ‘загрузить нераспакованное расширение’ и выберите папку, которую вы заранее поместили в директорию ~/Home.

Само расширение расширение само по себе не сможет сделать всю работу само, поэтому вам придется наладить совместимость Android приложения с расширением.

Существует несколько способов, как это можно сделать: вручную, на вашем ПК, или с помощью бесплатного Android приложения. Мы расскажем как сделать это вручную, но КСТАТИ! Существует также программа для ПК под названием ‘Twerk’, а также Archon Packager tool для мобильных устройств.

Способ «вручную» (Не рекомендуется)

Чтобы сконвертировать APK фаилы вручную — то что делать совсем не обязательно, если вы воспользуетесь одним из приложений, упомянутых выше — вам нужно будет установить ‘chromeos-apk’ через командую строку утилиты JavaScript. Все это можно сделать в менеджере Node Packaged Modules (npm).

sudo apt-get install npm nodejs nodejs-legacy

Пользуетесь Ubuntu 64 ? Тогда выполите еще и это:

sudo apt-get install lib32stdc++6

А теперь выполните команду, чтобы установить сам скрипт:

npm install -g chromeos-apk

Ну вот и все. Отправляйтесь на сайт Google и найдите APK приложения, которое хотите опробовать, но помните, что не все Android приложения запустятся, а те что запустятся могут быть багнутыми или лагать.

Поместите выбранный Android APK в ~/Home, затем снова зайдите в Terminal, чтобы сконвертировать и заменить ваш APK и выбрать другое имя фаила:

chromeos-apk replaceme.apk —archon

Команда будет выполнена за считанные секунды.

Теперь у вас есть работающее расширение ARChon для Chrome и сконвертированный APK, который ждет своего часа в папке Home. Осталось лишь установить его и проверить, работает ли оно!

Возвращайтесь на страницу chrome://extensions, снова нажмите ‘загрузить нераспакованное расширение’, но теперь выберите созданный скриптом файл.

Приложение должно без проблем установиться, но запустится ли оно? Откройте страницу с приложениями Chrome и проверьте.
