Bluetooth keyboards like Apple’s Magic Keyboard keep getting better and better. Some Bluetooth keyboards are designed specifically for iPhone and even more for iPad. You can use any Bluetooth keyboard you like, though. All you have to do is set it up!

How to pair a Bluetooth keyboard to your iPhone and iPad

To set up a Bluetooth keyboard on iPad and iPhone, you have to go through Bluetooth setting.

1. Turn the Bluetooth keyboard on if it isn’t already. Otherwise, switch it off and then on to make it discoverable. (Some keyboards might have other procedures for putting them in pairing mode — check with the manufacturer for details.)

1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap on Bluetooth.
3. Make sure Bluetooth is set to On, then let it search for devices.
4. Tap on a Bluetooth keyboard, when it appears, to pair.

Depending on the keyboard, you might have to enter an authorization code. Otherwise, you’ll be good to go.

If you’re using Apple’s Magic Keyboard, you can check the power level at any time using Notification Center.

1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to bring down Notification Center.
2. Scroll down to the Batteries sections.

How to disconnect or un-pair a Bluetooth keyboard from your iPhone or iPad

If you want to revert back to the virtual keyboard, you can simply turn your Bluetooth keyboard off. If you want to disconnect it, or have your iPhone or iPad forget about it entirely, you can do that in Settings.

1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap on Bluetooth.
3. Tap on the Info button to the right of the a Bluetooth keyboard entry.
   1. Tap on Disconnect to temporarily stop your iPhone or iPad from detecting a Bluetooth keyboard. (You have to reconnect later to use it again.)
   2. Tap on Forget This Device to sever the pairing between your iPhone or iPad and a Bluetooth keyboard. (You’ll have to re-pair later to use it again.)

   Apple has given iPad better keyboard shortcut handling. It doesn’t work — yet! — on iPhone, but once you’re connected, you can quickly and easily find all available keyboard shortcuts on iPad.

   1. Launch the app you want to use.
   2. Hold down the modifier key—shift, alt, or command keys— you want to see the shortcuts for.

   When using your iPad by itself, double-clicking the Home button is how you bring up the fast app switcher. Once you’re connected to a keyboard, however, you can switch apps without your fingers ever leaving the keys.

   1. Hold down the command key and hit the tab key.
   2. Keep hitting the tab key until you get to app you want to switch to.
   3. Let go of the command key.

   How to pair a Bluetooth keyboard with your iPad

   So, you bought a new Bluetooth keyboard and want to use it with your iPad. For those who do a lot of typing on their iPad, an external keyboard can be more efficient than the onscreen keyboard.

   Pairing your new keyboard with your iPad is easy to do, and this tutorial shows you how.

   

   Pair a Bluetooth keyboard with your iPad

   1) Make sure that Bluetooth is enabled on your iPad. Go to Settings, select Bluetooth, and check that the slider is green. Alternatively, you can do this from Control Center by opening it and tapping the Bluetooth button.

   

   2) Follow the instructions you received with your keyboard to put it into pairing mode.

   3) After a moment, you should see the keyboard displayed under Other Devices on your iPad. Tap it.

   

   4) When the pop-up window displays showing you the Bluetooth Pairing Request, enter the code on your keyboard.

   Note: Some keyboards do not show the option to confirm via a four-digit code and pair directly after you tap the name.

   

   5) The new keyboard should then automatically display under My Devices and show as Connected.

   

   That’s it! You should now be able to use your new Bluetooth keyboard with your iPad. The device should also remain in the list of My Devices in your Settings. So, if you turn off the keyboard and then turn it on the next day, it should be ready to use again.

   Remove a Bluetooth keyboard from your iPad

   If you decide to remove the keyboard for any reason, you can unpair it just as easily.

   1) Open Settings and tap Bluetooth.

   2) Select the blue info icon ⓘ next to the keyboard under My Devices.

   3) Tap Forget This Device.

   

   4) Tap Forget Device to confirm the action.
