    Bluetooth security

There are two types of Bluetooth in Apple devices, Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). The Bluetooth security model for both versions includes the following distinct security features:

    • Pairing: The process for creating one or more shared secret keys
    • Bonding: The act of storing the keys created during pairing for use in subsequent connections to form a trusted device pair
    • Authentication: Verifying that the two devices have the same keys
    • Encryption: Message confidentiality
    • Message integrity: Protection against message forgeries
    • Secure Simple Pairing: Protection against passive eavesdropping and protection against man-in-the-middle attacks

Bluetooth version 4.1 added the Secure Connections feature to Bluetooth Classic (BR/EDR) physical transport.

The security features for each type of Bluetooth are listed below.

    FIPS-approved algorithms (AES-CMAC and P-256 elliptic curve)

Pairing information stored in a secure location in iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS devices

Secure Simple Pairing: Protection against passive eavesdropping

    Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman Exchange (ECDHE)

Secure Simple Pairing: Protection against man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks

Two user-assisted numeric methods: numerical comparison or passkey entry

    Bluetooth Low Energy privacy

To help secure user privacy, BLE includes the following two features: address randomization and cross-transport key derivation.

Address randomization is a feature that reduces the ability to track a BLE device over a period of time by changing the Bluetooth device address on a frequent basis. For a device using the privacy feature to reconnect to known devices, the device address, referred to as the private address, must be resolvable by the other device. The private address is generated using the device’s identity resolving key exchanged during the pairing procedure.

iOS 13 or later and iPadOS 13.1 or later have the ability to derive link keys across transports, a feature known as cross-transport key derivation. For example, a link key generated with BLE can be used to derive a Bluetooth Classic link key. In addition, Apple added Bluetooth Classic to BLE support for devices that support the Secured Connections feature that was introduced in the Bluetooth Core Specification 4.1 (see the Bluetooth Core Specification 5.1).

Turn on Bluetooth to pair your device

Pair your device with a Bluetooth accessory

    1. On your device, go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn on Bluetooth. Stay on this screen until you complete the steps to pair your accessory.
    2. Place your accessory in discovery mode and wait for it to appear on your device. If you don’t see it or aren’t sure how to make it discoverable, check the instructions that came with your accessory or contact the manufacturer.
    3. To pair, tap your accessory name when it appears onscreen. You might need to enter the PIN or passcode. If you aren’t sure what your PIN or passcode is, check the documentation for your accessory.

After you pair your accessory, you can use it with your device. To pair multiple Bluetooth accessories, repeat these steps. If you have multiple Bluetooth devices paired with your iPhone or iPad, you can choose which audio source you want to use.

    Unpair a Bluetooth accessory

To unpair a Bluetooth accessory, go to Settings > Bluetooth, find the device you want to unpair, and tap the More Info button , then Forget this Device. This removes the accessory from the list of available Bluetooth devices.

To add the Bluetooth accessory to your device again, place it back in discovery mode and repeat the steps to pair your device.

If you can’t pair your Bluetooth accessory

Set up AirPods with your Mac and other Bluetooth devices

Learn how to set up your AirPods with your Mac, Android device, or another Bluetooth device to listen to music, take phone calls, and more.

Bluetooth menu in the menu bar on Mac

    Use AirPods with your Mac

If you’re using AirPods (2nd generation), make sure that your Mac has macOS Mojave 10.14.4 or later. AirPods Pro (1st generation) require macOS Catalina 10.15.1 or later. AirPods (3rd generation) require macOS Monterey or later. AirPods Pro (2nd generation) require the latest version of macOS. If you set up your AirPods with your iPhone and your Mac is signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID, your AirPods might be ready to use with your Mac. Place your AirPods in your ears and click either the Bluetooth menu or the volume control in the menu bar on your Mac. 1 Then choose your AirPods from the list.

If your AirPods don’t appear in the Bluetooth or volume control menu, 2 pair your AirPods with your Mac:

    1. On your Mac, choose System Settings from the Apple menu , then click Bluetooth.
    2. Make sure that Bluetooth is on.
    3. Put both AirPods in the charging case and open the lid.
    4. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the status light flashes white.
    5. Select your AirPods in the Devices list, then click Connect.

Bluetooth settings in System Preferences on your Mac

If sound still plays from your Mac speakers, click either the Bluetooth menu or the volume control in the menu bar and make sure that your AirPods are selected as the output device. 1

Use AirPods with a non-Apple device

You can use AirPods as a Bluetooth headset with a non-Apple device. You can’t use Siri, but you can listen and talk. To set up your AirPods with an Android phone or other non-Apple device, 3 follow these steps:

    Switch devices automatically

Your AirPods (2nd and 3rd generation) and your AirPods Pro (1st and 2nd generation) can switch automatically between your Mac with macOS Big Sur, iPhone with iOS 14, and iPad with iPadOS 14 or later. Your devices need to be signed in with the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication. For example, while listening to music on your Mac, you answer a call on your iPhone. Your AirPods automatically switch from the music on your Mac to the phone call on your iPhone.

In some situations, a notification about your AirPods appears on the screen of your Mac. When you hold the pointer over the notification, a Connect button appears. Click Connect to confirm that you want your AirPods to switch to your Mac or stay with your Mac.

If you want to turn off automatic switching for your Mac, open Bluetooth preferences on your Mac while your AirPods are in your ears. Click the Options button next to your AirPods in the list of devices. Click Connect to This Mac, and then choose When Last Connected to This Mac. To turn this feature on again, choose Automatically.

Sound should not automatically switch from one device to another if you’re in a conversation, like a phone call, a FaceTime call, or a video conference.
