Arch bluetooth no sound

Arch Linux

Hello Arch Linux community, my MPOW Bluetooth headset arrived today, and while I can connect them to my phone fairly easily, I’m having trouble getting them to work with my Toshiba satellite laptop. They pair and connect successfully, they show up as an output device in the pulse audio volume control application I’m using, and I can even hear the slight static of «working headphones» after they connect. Still, I can’t pull up a YouTube video and listen to it or anything, no sound comes out.

restarting the bluetooth.service and pulseaudio a couple times

connecting only with bluetoothcli instead of KDE’s BlueDevil

pacmd set-card-profile 3 a2dp_sink

to set my card to the A2DP profile that my headset is set to in pulse audio.

Arch Linux

I’ve recently switched from Windows to Arch and want to use my Bluetooth Headphones. I installed KDE Plasma with Wayland, Pipewire and the drivers for my Bluetooth dongle. Connecting to the Headset works and I even hear audio using HSP/HFP. Only A2DP does not work and I don’t want to compromise with the abhorrent HSP/HFP audio.

I tried editing .config/pipewire/media-session.d/bluez-monitor.conf to switch to a different codecs than aac but that just disables the A2DP option.
I also got it to work for a while after I locked the display and went away for some food. After I came back it worked till I reconnected the headphones and the sound was not there anymore.

Can you guys please help me troubleshoot? Thank you

Re: [SOLVED] No sound using A2DP Bluetooth audio. HSP/HFP works.

Known problem with the current bluez version, downgrade that to 5.58 or upgrade to bluez-git and remove /var/lib/bluetooth before re-pairing

Bluez 5.58 does not seem to work (I can’t connect to any devices) and bluez-git has the same issue.

Re: [SOLVED] No sound using A2DP Bluetooth audio. HSP/HFP works.

I think it is lilkely that you didn’t restart your computer after installing bluez-git or didn’t remove /var/lib/bluetooth before pairing.

Re: [SOLVED] No sound using A2DP Bluetooth audio. HSP/HFP works.

Just to update, I have had the same problem, in this case with a JBL TUNE230NC TWS earbuds, no sound with A2DP and crappy audio with HSP/HFP.
Downgrading bluez to 5.58-1 from 5.66-1 solved it.

Before dumping all the logs and other relevant information, I will explain to you my situation. I have a bluetooth headset (AKG C50BT) hooked up to my laptop via bluetoothctl + PulseAudio. Everything works correctly for about 10-20 minutes listening to music from MPD, and then the sound quality lags for a very short time and then the sound comes to a full stop. From this point on, nothing has appeared in system logs, bluetoothctl reports that my headset is connected, PulseAudio does not raise red flags. Here’s the strange part, so my headset has buttons for volume adjustment/pause/change music, if I press any of these within 30-60 seconds of the sound blackout, the sound restores and things return to normal (until the next sound lag/blackout), and if I delay pressing anything for longer than that, pushing a button on the headset emits a ‘disconnect’ sound, and this appears in my journalctl:

Jun 28 22:16:17 torus kernel: Bluetooth: hci0 link tx timeout Jun 28 22:16:17 torus kernel: Bluetooth: hci0 killing stalled connection 34:df:2a:2c:b1:84 Jun 28 22:16:17 torus dbus-daemon[382]: [system] Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_return", sender=":1.49" (uid=1000 pid=507 comm="/usr/bin/pulseaudio --daemonize=no ") interface="(unset)" member="(unset)" error name="(unset)" requested_reply="0" destination=":1.2" (uid=0 pid=383 comm="/usr/lib/bluetooth/bluetoothd ") Jun 28 22:16:17 torus bluetoothd[383]: Unable to get io data for Headset Voice gateway: getpeername: Transport endpoint is not connected (107)

My attempt to diagnose this:

  • I followed the wiki which suggested the problem could be that PulseAudio is suspending my headset. I commented out «load-module module-suspend-on-idle», but the problem persists.
  • From reading some other discussions, I thought this could be a power saving issue. I am not running special software for power saving, I’ve manually configured my power saving. I do NOT have any power saving features for USB devices, so my bluetooth device listed under ‘lsusb’ appears to be untouched in this case

Any ideas? My headset does not run into this problem when hooked up with my phone. I do not want to keep pressing buttons on my headset to keep it connected to my laptop

Here are PulseAudio contents regarding the bluetooth headset:

My system is up-to-date and MPD is configured with PulseAudio in the same was as the MPD wiki.

NOTE: I will check to see if this problem occurs with other sound sources like Firefox (YouTube), it might be specific to MPD.

UPDATE: This isn’t specific to MPD, the issue occurs with other sound sources as well. Added detailed journal log when the headset disconnects.
