Arch Linux User Repository

Thanks to lots of persistent work from @ceasarw, this package now builds in a clean chroot, and with LLVM 15 now in [community] everything is pretty hunky dory.

As @caesarw notes upstream Brave folks have been so unresponsive to allowing distro packages that the thread there got automatically closed. If anybody wants to keep persuing them feel free to link progress in here.

In me mean time @yakoyakoyokuyoku has contributed quite a bit of effort towards an updated build that works again. This package has been updated with his work and my user repository has the prebuilt package as usual for those without 50Gb of disk space and a days worth of CPU time to throw at a build!

caesarw commented on 2023-04-28 11:32 (UTC) (edited on 2023-04-29 06:27 (UTC) by caesarw)

Due to upstream developers being not responsive to the thread and also changes in the build system and its build process, I need much more time to figure out a proper build for Arch Linux. If you need the latest release, please use brave-bin for the time being.

As always, any help is appreciated.

caesarw commented on 2023-01-29 10:18 (UTC)

@Bitals you can try edit the PKGBUILD file and switch the git upstream of chromium to the Chromium GitHub mirror (https://github.com/chromium/chromium.git). Fresh clone from googlesource are prone to issues. Alternatively, you can try the pre-built binaries of this package hosted by the maintainer, alerque. His repo is listed in the unofficial repos in Arch Wiki.

Am I the only one consistently unable to dowload chromium source via this pkgbuild specifically? It clones fine manually from the same url, but then makepkg complaints it’s not the repo it needs for some reason.

Does anyone have any idea how to tackle this?

alerque commented on 2023-01-11 08:16 (UTC)

@coxackie No. If you want prebuilt binaries for now use the brave-bin package. I don’t host binaries for AUR stuff if they don’t build in a clean chroot. If and when that gets fixed this would be in my personal package repository. When the LLVM issue also gets resolved and can use a stable release then this should make it into [community].

coxackie commented on 2022-12-20 10:42 (UTC)

@alerque is there a place where pre-built binaries can be found?

alerque commented on 2022-12-12 18:05 (UTC)

Current status (2022-12-12):

  • This package is known not to build properly in a clean chroot. It only builds on at least the 2nd try in a dirty build tree, which doesn’t play nice with chroots. If anybody is able to work out a fix for whatever network/race condition is happening that kills clean builds I’d love to accept a contribution.
  • The requirement for LLVM>16 must be met with llvm-git for now. In addition the rust stable compiler must be supplied by rustup, not rust in order to take advantage of the llvm version.

Both of those points are currently blockers for getting this into [community].

@MarsSeed PKGBUILD in that repo uses a precompiled binary.

MarsSeed commented on 2022-05-04 14:56 (UTC)

You could check Manjaro’s Brave build repo, or reach out to its maintainer, Stefano Capitani on GitLab, or directly by email (stefano AT manjaro.org).

Given its popularity maybe is it a good idea to move this package to [community]? Or flag it as Orphan?

jemadux commented on 2021-12-18 11:03 (UTC)

can please update pkgbuild my friend ? there’s chaotic aur that will build automatically the package

alerque commented on 2021-12-11 19:59 (UTC)

@doctorzeus Becuase it is a train-load of work to do, nobody else is contributing, and I’ve been traveling and my laptop is not fast enough to even tinker with this build. Feel free to send PRs or patches that clean this up to Arch packaging guidelines. I’d be happy to accept them and it would accelerate it getting into [community].

doctorzeus commented on 2021-12-05 09:35 (UTC)

Seriously how is this not in the official repos yet?

korimitsu commented on 2021-11-23 10:59 (UTC)

Another issue: icon is missing.

monarc99 commented on 2021-09-29 20:26 (UTC)

@alerque decide yourself, what you want to be included.

I have updated my PKGBUILD to v1.30.86. I only tested COMPONENT=4, compiles with makepkg.conf CFLAGS/XX, LTO + PGO. But there a bad CFLAGS (from standard makepkg.conf) flags left, that need to be filtered.

alerque commented on 2021-09-11 15:15 (UTC)

@monarc99 You’ve clearly done a bit more fiddling with the assorted patches an options that are out there. I’m not sure all of your changes are generally applicable (not saying they aren’t, I haven’t had time to dig into each), but if there is anything you think should be put in the AUR here do feel free to open pull requests.

monarc99 commented on 2021-09-10 21:23 (UTC) (edited on 2021-09-29 20:17 (UTC) by monarc99)

i made my own PKGBUILD for 1.29.77 a few days ago. Maybe you can use something from it.

a good source for the patches is the arch chromium PKGBUILD

@ant0n et all, lets keep the comments here about packaging issues, general Brave usage issues should go in another forum to not clutter up this comment space. I’m deleting comments that have no relation to packaging. Grey areas like crashes that could be blamed on Arch can stay until proven otherwise, but things like how to configure Brave to handle popups or site X or whatever just don’t belong here. Thanks for understanding.

1:1.52.117-1 seems to be working fine with KDE KWallet. Yay!

df8oe commented on 2023-05-06 07:54 (UTC)

The problem seems not to be a Brave problem, it is an upstream Chromium issue:
https://community.brave.com/t/notice-unexplained-data-loss-issue/485498

So the best would be to stock with all Brave and Chromium on a working stage until the issue is fixed!

gu1ll0me commented on 2023-05-05 18:26 (UTC)

For those who want to downgrade using Git :

git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/brave-bin.git cd brave-bin git reset --hard HEAD~1 makepkg -si

alosarjos commented on 2023-05-05 17:09 (UTC)

Those who want to downgrade version, you probably have the package of the previous one cached and can run it from there. For those who don’t the best I can do is offer a ZIP to run a makepkg from there if you want.

When brave-sync is unavailable there is no access to previously saved cookies and passwords. Of course everything was dropped. Big deal.

But yeah, it would be better to allow people to donwgrade the browser to 1.50.125 version.

Vernox commented on 2023-05-05 12:03 (UTC)

The last update should be pulled of the aur. After downgrading brave back to the previous working version, all logins have expired and connections removed.

finoderi commented on 2023-05-04 18:32 (UTC)

The problem with brave-sync appeared in 1.51.* It can’t be fixed with readding the browser to the sync-chain and it happens on gentoo as well. Brave just can’t access its safe storage in KDE wallet for some reason. Most likely it’s a Chromium problem again. Yet another fuck up after less than a month from the previous one.

df8oe commented on 2023-05-04 17:29 (UTC)

@NGr: Thanks — I will give it a try 🙂

NGr commented on 2023-05-04 17:25 (UTC)

@df8oe Once you have cleared the sync data, if you put your sync code back in you shouldn’t lose anything.

alosarjos commented on 2023-05-04 17:22 (UTC)

@df8e No problem, I rather have some info here for other users, since I don’t use KDE

Enable snaps on Arch Linux and install brave

Snaps are applications packaged with all their dependencies to run on all popular Linux distributions from a single build. They update automatically and roll back gracefully.

Snaps are discoverable and installable from the Snap Store, an app store with an audience of millions.

Enable snapd

On Arch Linux, snap can be installed from the Arch User Repository (AUR). The manual build process is the Arch-supported install method for AUR packages, and you’ll need the prerequisites installed before you can install any AUR package. You can then install snap with the following:

git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/snapd.git cd snapd makepkg -si

Once installed, the systemd unit that manages the main snap communication socket needs to be enabled:

sudo systemctl enable --now snapd.socket

To enable classic snap support, enter the following to create a symbolic link between /var/lib/snapd/snap and /snap :

sudo ln -s /var/lib/snapd/snap /snap

Either log out and back in again, or restart your system, to ensure snap’s paths are updated correctly.

Install brave

To install brave, simply use the following command:
