Arch linux kde gnome

Arch Linux

Hello, didnt know exactly where to put this. I’m not completely new to Arch but I am to the forums.

I have gnome installed. I want to remove it and install KDE instead. (getting a bit bored with gnome) What i want to know is how to do it safely as possible without hurting the other packages; wine, libreoffice, vlc, chrome and other important system stuff for example; and install KDE. Also whether its actually easier and safer to do a complete format and reinstall of arch. While this is a bit more cumbersome, i don’t mind reinstalling, kind of fun really. But, its very much better if i could do it without formatting entirely.

You don’t need to uninstall gnome to install KDE. Desktop environments behave well when when installed on the same machine, as only one is ever active at the same time.

Here, if you want to install KDE, you should look at the wiki:

Once you’re done, you simply have to log out of your current session and select the desktop environment of your choice before logging back in.

If you insist on uninstalling gnome, you will need to remove all gnome-related packages via pacman, as Morn recommended.

Last time I tried to uninstall gnome with (‘Pacman -Rsn gnome’, I think) I ended up uninstalling important dependencies. the system failed to load the greeter.

You uninstalled gdm but didn’t disable the service, most likely.

Arch Linux

Hi, I’ve been using Arch for some weeks and I love it. I started using KDE but the way things work there I don’t like it so much so I want to give GNOME a try and maybe stick with it.

What would be the procedure to do that well and don’t mess things up?

Remove the packages you installed for KDE, install the packages you need for GNOME.

I used to use gnome with sddm, it was fine for the most part, but you might want to use gdm if you plan on using gnome by itself.

In my experience I was able to get KDE and GNOME to play nice with each other after some initial config file screwups caused by having them both installed at the same time.

The order you install them in seems to matter, I’d installed GNOME and then KDE, with KDE overwriting some of Gnome’s GTK/Qt settings.

I really wish the two teams (plus others) would just create their own separate config folder already, like xfce4, so we can finally switch between all of them freely without worrying about breaking some random configuration and rendering everything unreadable.

They can be be installed side by side. One can start Gnome from sddm, or Plasma from gdm. One can also have gdm and sddm side by side and enable one or the other.
Either can be removed at any time.

Common misconception is that the G in GTK stands for GNOME. It doesn’t. Both Qt and GTK are just toolkits that are ‘above’ (or ‘below’) the DE. So, logically, there is only ‘one’ configuration for GTK and Qt. KDE and GNOME mess with the config to make GTK and Qt applications look somewhat identical and ‘fit’ in the DE theme/look and feel. My recommendation would be to have two separate users for KDE and GNOME if you want to compare the DEs for usefulness / look and feel, since that will create two separate $HOME directories for each DE to mess around in and you get to see each DE’s ‘default’ configuration.

sudo pacman -Rnsc plasma sudo pacman -S gnome

Removes any and all KDE packages and installs all the GNOME ones.

Установка GUI на Arch Linux

Имеется довольно много графического окружения и на любой вкус. Я расскажу о некоторых из них и как установить их на arch linux.

Основные графические оболочки

Смотрим какая видеокарта имеется в системе:

Как вы, наверное, знаете, есть много популярных менеджеров для входа в графическую среду — GDM, SDDM, LXDM, LightDM и MDM и так далее. Я буду использовать именно SDDM.

Устанавливаем SDDM (менеджер для входа):

Добавляем sddm в автозагрузку ОС:

Переходим к выбору графической среды.

Установка Gnome на Arch Linux

Устанавливаем Xorg пакеты:

# pacman -S xorg xorg-xinit mesa

Устанавливаем gnome. Откройте терминал и выполните следующую команду:

# pacman -S gnome gnome-extra
