Firefox on Linux cannot open new windows from a launcher, or external links. The error: «Firefox is already running.»

I’m on Manjaro Linux with KDE. When Firefox is running (even in a stopped activity), I can’t open any links from outside Firefox, or open a new window from outside Firefox (e.g., from a launcher) on another desktop or in another activity. I always get this message:

Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To use Firefox, you must first close the existing Firefox process, restart your device, or use a different profile.

This is the bug that stopped me from using Firefox as a default browser all those years ago, and it’s still happening in different flavours and DEs. I haven’t found any way to fix it.

I have StartWithLastProfile=1 in my profiles.ini . I have an unmodified .desktop file, but also have two extra launchers for my two main profiles, which I tend to use. This is what the startup class and exec look like on the custom launchers:

StartupWMClass=firefox-default Exec=export MOZC_DBUS_REMOTE=1 && /usr/lib/firefox/firefox -P default —class firefox-default —no-remote %u

The problem happens with both firefox-default and the original Firefox as default web browsers. And it happened before I added the desktop files too. I do not know if it happens on Windows or Mac.

edit: Solution is to remove the —no-remote in at least one place.

Firefox is already running but is not responding linux

and Firefox doesn’t open. I tried this in command line: but it didn’t work. Also, I don’t know in which directory I must execute the right commands. How can I fix this?

. in /.mozilla/firefox/random string of alphanumeric characters.default/ The former is present while Firefox is running to prevent more than one different instance from trying to simultaneously write to the same set of profile files, and if Firefox is not closed cleanly, neither may be removed. Error message received in this case should be: From anywhere in the filesystem (or removing this if pwd reports /.mozilla/firefox/random string of alphanumeric characters.default ), replacing random string of alphanumeric characters with the FF profile folder on your computer, do rm

/.mozilla/firefox/random string of alphanumeric characters.default/.parentlock /.mozilla/firefox/random string of alphanumeric characters.default/lock` (assuming the first sentence pans out) to remove them, if there isn’t a Firefox process running. Источник

FireFox говорит, что он запущен и не откравается. Sudo kill не убивает процесс. Что делать ? (решение)

Запускаю FireFox появляется окно с надписью:
Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.

При этом firefox нигде не запущен и процесс не хочет выключаться. Просто kill номер-процесса — ничего не даёт, но и не ругается. Решил запуском kill с параметром -9
kill -9 12298 Где 12298 номер процесса (firefox) полученный командой
ps ax | grep firefox

Наверное помогл бы и банальный ребут системы Я думаю, что достаточно и иксов, которые заберут с собой огнелиса.
Кстати, а killall firefox не помогает? killall firefox
Я бы не стал писать отдельной темой, если бы оно помагало. Рестарт системы, очень-очень не хотелось и не «линукс путь» это откровенно. Иксы конечно можно было. но тоже очень не хотелось (есть причины) куча всего запущенного.

20:54:13 up 15 days, 19:42, 1 user, load average: 1.08, 0.95, 0.75 Гг,а я помню эту проблему решал запуском конкверора)))) зы: на правах шутки А я конкверор и запускал 🙂 чтобы найти решение проблеммы. Вообще от пользования конкуерора вместо огнелиса держит его плохая кроссплатформенность.

kill и killall не убивают процесс, а звершают, а kill -9 шлет сигнал номер 9, то есть полноценный KILL — `man kill`. Кстати, че за скрин ужасный? man kill не дал мне очевидного ответа (всё таки англ. не родной). Что делать если kill не работает. Я раньше и не догадывался, что kill завершает программу, думал рубит на корню. Скрин самый что не наесть официальный с сайта mozzila отвечающий за эту проблемму (у них написано в ответе: дождитесь загрузки firefox или перезагрузите систему, впрочем как и на самом окне). Решалось ожиданием минут 4-3 и фокс сам запускался. Он там то ли обновлениями занимается, то ли ещё какими-то сервисными делами. И ведь не было ж такой байды раньше в Линуксе! Пользую Ubuntu 9.04 и только в ней я стал наблюдал это. До того, только Винда этим страдала. До того, что пришлось перейти на Chrome.
У меня ощущение, что ребята из Мозиллы что-то конкретно намудрили.
Не работает у меня ни kill -9 Файерфокса вообще нет в списке процессов. А это окошко всё-равно выдаёт.
На той самой странице ещё говорилось, что причиной может быть заблокированная папка с профилями. Где в линуксе они хранятся?

Пользую Ubuntu 9.04 у меня 8.04.2 LTS. И конкретно в этой проблемме, ОС — имеет ИМХО последнее значение. что причиной может быть заблокированная папка с профилями Не поверишь КАК и В ВИНДЕ — в домашнем каталоге пользователя. в винде это c:/document and settings/USER/mozzila/firefox/
в линуксе это: /home/USER/mozzila/firefox/
. и там папка с «левым»(странным) именем на подобии «ev43tpj7.default« Подобные глюки как описанный возникали иногда из-за тупых сайтов с кривыми программерами\дизайнерами, запускаю firefox и тут же вылетает или подгружается и на какой-нибудь странице опять вылетает. или после подвисания и закрытия появляется указанное окошко. Тогда берём, перемещаем весь профиль в безопасное место, запускаем FireFox (он создаст новый профиль и если проблемма пропала, то проблемма явно в дополнениях\локализациях\открытых страницах или т.п. А по кусочкам возвращая старый профиль в новосозданный, можно вернуть почти полностью все любимые настройки и определить на каком этапе (из-за чего) вылетает «огненный лис» (FireFox).

На картинке явственно мерещится вистуозный аэрогласс, так что килалл не поможет. Под виндой у меня такая фигня бывала, помогала только переустановка. А как лечить в линухе — затрудняюсь сказать. Посмотри, если в пользовательской папке лежат какие-то ФФ-шные потроха, попробуй их удалить. Только учти, что потом придется все настройки заново ставить. Я указал, что это с сайта моззилы официального. Не мой снимок экрана. Я о***м украшательством не страдаю 🙂 Тоже наблюдаю данную проблему и ,кстати, только на кубунту. Решаю убийством процесса abrowser через системный монитор Удивитесь, но аналогичный трабл живет и на Мастдае ХР

ПРОБЛЕМА
Firefox уже запущен, но не отвечает. Чтобы открыть новое окно, вы должны сперва завершить запущенный процесс Firefox или перезагрузить компьютер.Лазил по форумам, действовал по всяким советам – не помогло.
Решил эту проблему так.
Когда выплыло это сообщение, сделал:
1. В диспетчере задач завершил процесс fierfox.exe в ручную.
2. Выполнил резервное копирование всех своих закладок в браузере fierfox (панель инструментов, «Закладки», «Управление закладками», «импорт и резервирование», «Резервное копирование»
3. Сохранил файл с закладками (на раб стол, например)
3.1. Скачал с сайта мозила последнюю версию fierfox
4. Закрыл fierfox
5. Отключил интернет.
6. Снес fierfox к едрене фене (Установка удаление программ)
7. Нашел на диске «С» папку: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
8. Удалил её (папку «Mozilla Firefox» вместе с содержимым)к той же фене
8.1. Удалил все старые ярлыки fierfox (чтобы потом не путаться)
9. Запустил ранее скачанный файл fierfox.exe (последнюю версию)
9.1. Установил fierfox
10. В меню «Закладки» «Управление закладками» восстановил свои прежние закладки
Все работает без проблем, никаких сообщений больше не вылазит.
Видимо был какой то приобретенный глюк в fierfox 😀 Я решил эту проблему на Ubuntu 16.04 следующим образом: удалил папку со своим профилем в пути .mozilla/firefox/»имя папки вашего профиля», а так же удалил строки профиля в файле profiles.
ini. После этого удалятся все куки и закладки, будьте осторожны. И все, браузер заработал нормально. Источник

End Firefox processes

If Firefox did not shut down normally when you last used it, Firefox might still be running in the background, even though it is not visible. If you try to open it while it’s running, an error message will appear with the option to click Close Firefox . If that doesn’t solve the problem, restart your computer or try the following options. Restart your computer to see if the problem goes away or try the following options.

Ubuntu Linux

1. Click on System and choose Administration .
2. In Administration, click on System Monitor . Here you will find firefox-bin one or more times.
3. Highlight the listing and click End Process for each one.

Use the Windows Task Manager to close the existing Firefox process

1. Right-click on an empty spot in the Windows task bar and select Task Manager (or press Ctrl + Shift + Esc ).
2. When the Windows Task Manager opens, select the Processes tab.
3. Select the entry for firefox.exe (press F on the keyboard to find it) and click End Process .
4. Click Yes in the «Task Manager Warning» dialog that appears.
5. Repeat the above steps to end any additional firefox.exe processes, then exit the Windows Task Manager.
6. Start Firefox normally.

Remove the profile lock file

Firefox may have shut down abnormally, leaving the lock file in place. To fix this, open the profile folder (see Finding your profile without opening Firefox) and delete the parent.lock file lock and .parentlock files .parentlock file .

Initialize the connection to a file share

If you store the profile on a file share, try accessing the file share beforehand using Windows Explorer.

Check access rights

Firefox must also have the right to create files in the profile folder. The error can occur if you try to use a profile from a file system mounted with read-only permission (e.g. a remote Windows share which doesn’t have «Allow network users to change my files» checked).

To check if the profile folder has the proper permissions:

1. Find your Firefox profile folder — see Finding your profile without opening Firefox.
   • If you only have one profile, its folder would have «default» in the name.
2. Right-click on your profile folder and select Properties .
3. Click on the General tab.
4. Make sure Read-only is not checked marked.

3. Make sure Ownership & Permissions is set to Read & Write.

Restore data from a locked profile
