Mint 19.1 Install Avision AD240U Scanner

Just had to install a Avision AD240U Scanner, because it did not work out of the box here the how to:

The scanner is not officially supported by sane according to sane.org, but the manufacturer supplies a back-end package for sane:

The Scanner is recognized by the usb pls check:

lsusb | grep avision Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0638:2cdf Avision, Inc. 

$SANE_DEBUG_DLL=128 scanimage -L

will provide more information about what is going wrong.

load: trying to load `/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane/libsane-avision_adv.so.1' [dll] load: couldn't open `/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane/libsane-avision_adv.so.1' (No such file or directory)

so the program is looking on the wrong place for the according files.

1. find the location of the missing files

sudo locate avision /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-avision_adv.so /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-avision_adv.so.1 /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-avision_adv.so.1.0.22 /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-avision_adv.so.1.0.22_1.0 /usr/local/lib/sane/libsane-avision_adv.so /usr/local/lib/sane/libsane-avision_adv.so.1 /usr/local/lib/sane/libsane-avision_adv.so.1.0.22 /usr/local/lib/sane/libsane-avision_adv.so.1.0.22_1.0 

$cd /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane $sudo ln /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-avision_adv.so.1.0.22_1.0 . $sudo ln /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-avision_adv.so.1.0.22 . $sudo ln /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-avision_adv.so.1 . $sudo ln /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-avision_adv.so. .

$scanimage -L device `avision_adv:libusb:001:004' is a Avision, Inc. AD240U Sheetfed Scanner

In Jan 2003 I bought VueScan for my Epson Perfection 1200. I used it a lot, more functions than the standard driver. Got new computers with new operating systems, forgot about VueScan. I got a new Epson scanner — old one doesn’t have Win10 drivers. I remembered VueScan. Found it, downloaded the trial version, and my old EPSON 1200 scanner WORKED again. Wow, a purchase made in 2003, works on a PC with an operating system that doesn’t exist in 2003. 17 YEARS later! And that for a very small amount of money.
