Best Command Line Torrent Clients for Linux

Most users prefer the usage of torrent clients for various files’ downloads due to the following bundled advantages:

• Users can easily determine the availability of a targeted torrent file from the seeders to leechers ratio.
• Torrent-downloadable files are always resumable such that any network issue will not affect the download progress of your file.
• Torrents support the remote download of files.
• With torrents, you can decide which file gets priority on the download queue.
• Users also benefit from the maximum download speed associated with a popular torrent.

While most torrent clients are prepackaged with a GUI, there are some exceptions reserved for Linux users who spend most of their productive time on the command-line environment.

1. Transmission-cli – Command-line BitTorrent Client

While Transmission is a free, fast, and easy-to-use torrent client with a beautiful user interface, this torrent-based software is versioned with transmission-cli to enable the download of torrent files from the Linux terminal environment.

Reference the following guide for transmission-cli installation on your Linux distribution:

Alternatively, you can install transmission-cli using the homebrew package manager as demonstrated below:

2. WebTorrent-cli – Command-line Streaming Torrent Client

webtorrent-cli is a simple command-line streaming torrent client that uses TCP and UDP in its torrent client’s communication. Some of its popular features are as follows:

• It is reliably fast and uses WebTorrent from the command line.
• Supports streaming via devices/players like VLC and Chromecast.
• Advanced torrent client features like peer discovery and magnet uri are also supported.

The webtorrent-cli client can be easily installed using the homebrew package manager as demonstrated below:

$ brew doctor $ brew search webtorrent-cli $ brew install webtorrent-cli $ webtorrent --version

To download a torrent, navigate to your preferred download directory and implement:

3. Stig – TUI and CLI BitTorrent Client

Stig exists both as a CLI (Command-Line Interface) and TUI (Text User Interface) solution for torrent file transmission, which is associated with features like a Full API abstraction layer, complete built-in documentation, color themes, filters, and tabs.

We can install the stig torrent client via pipx which can be installed via the homebrew package manager.

$ brew doctor $ brew search pipx $ brew install pipx $ pipx install stig

To download a file via torrent, implement:

$ stig download https://releases.ubuntu.com/22.04/ubuntu-22.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent

From here, you can track your active torrents on Stig by running:

To configure the main download host and other Stig settings, make sure you have the file $HOME/.config/stig/rc present on your Linux system:

For example, to set host and port for transmission-daemon, you could add the following lines in the above file:

set connect.host ubuntu.com set connect.port 80

Загрузка торрентов в Linux: как установить uTorrent или его аналоги (для Ubuntu, Mint, Elementary OS, и др.)

Здравствуйте.

Установил систему Linux из вашего набора. Все вроде ОК, в течении пары вечеров экран настроил, браузер с интернетом работает, но как загружать в ней торренты?

Пробовал uTorrent установить — но там целый квест, ни в какую не запускается.

Для начала хочу сказать, что uTorrent не панацея! Есть и другие более удобные торрент-клиенты, которые ничем не уступают ему (та же «трансмиссия», например 😉). По-моему, сейчас уже нет торрент-трекеров, где бы требовалась лишь конкретная версия uTorrent.

Тем не менее, в заметке покажу неск. вариантов (один из них должен помочь решить вопрос загрузки торрентов).

На тех же торрент-трекерах, на которых работает uTorrent — как правило, работают и его аналоги: Transmission, qBittorrent и пр.

Неск. примеров загрузки торрентов в Linux (для «Ubuntu-подобных» систем)

Вариант 1

Вероятно вы пользуетесь одной из версий 📌Linux для начинающих — а в ней должен быть свой центр приложений (в своем примере взял «AppCenter»). Открыв оный и введя в поисковую строку «Torrent» — вы найдите с десяток торрент-клиентов.

Лично я бы порекомендовал выбрать:

1. qBittorrent : небольшой бесплатный клиент, имеющий отличную совместимость (почти как uTorrent). Без рекламы и различных надоедливых «всплывающих» штук, имеет свой встроенный поиск торрентов;
2. Fragments : еще один «минималистический» клиент Bittorrent (на мой взгляд минус только один: слишком мало настроек по сравнению с qBittorrent, например, нет возможности поочередной загрузки серий. );
3. Transmission : легендарный клиент, один из лучших. Простой интерфейс без рекламы + наличие всех самых нужных опций. Рекомендую иметь на «борту»!

AppCenter — выбор торрент-клиента

Установив одно из приложений магазина — вам останется только найти его значок в меню ПУСК (СТАРТ) и запустить его.

Собственно, при работе с тем же qBittorrent — вы найдете, что по интерфейсу и меню он практически никак не отличается от uTorrent! 👇

Ну а дальше для загрузки торрента — достаточно загрузить файл «.torrent» с трекера, затем открыть клиент (qBittorrent или Fragments, например), и ему «скормить» («файл/открыть») этот торрент. Далее начнется стандартная загрузка файлов.

Вариант 2 (uTorrent)

Теперь пару слов для тех, кому нужен именно uTorrent.

На мой взгляд работать с uTorrent легче всего через менеджер пакетов Snap (по крайней мере, это легко и быстро устанавливается в большинство «Ubuntu-подобных» систем).

1. открыть терминал Linux: сочетание Win+T (Ctrl+Alt+T) ;
2. ввести команду для исправления и обновления ссылок и зависимостей: sudo apt update (нажать Enter);
3. далее установить менеджер пакетов Snap: sudo apt install snapd ;
4. затем установить uTorrent: sudo snap install utorrent ;
5. далее uTorrent нужно открыть — для этого введите utorrent в терминале и нажмите Enter (если появится ошибка — то используйте команду /snap/bin/utorrent ).

Собственно, сразу после этого (в течении 15-30 сек.) у вас должно появиться окно uTorrent — останется только войти в меню «файл» и открыть ссылку вида «.torrent» (обычно, эти файлы по умолчанию загружается в папку «Download» ).

Значок uTorrent на панели задач!

Если uTorrent вам станет не нужен — откройте терминал и используйте команду: sudo snap remove utorrent (произойдет удаление приложения! Будьте внимательны, т.к. вы потеряете все раздачи и список торрентов. ).

Иные рекомендации по теме — лишними не будут.

Deluge — открытый бесплатный кроссплатформенный торрент-клиент. С помощью программы можно скачивать и раздавать контент в торрент-сетях, создавать свои torrent-файлы. Очень богатый выбор функций и настроек.
