Bluetooth Adapter (Dongle) for Mint 21.
Post by SteveR » Fri Oct 14, 2022 3:59 pm
I’m looking to buy a Bluetooth 5.0 (5.1 if available) adapter for my computer running Mint 21. I ran across this article: «The Best Bluetooth Dongle Linux». Based on that article, the Edimax Bluetooth Adapter appears to be a good candidate for purchase. Prior to buying, I would like to get some feedback. Has anyone used this adapter? Recommendations?
Mint 21 uses kernel 5.15.0-50. The product specifications for Ubuntu refer to kernel 5.3 as a minimum, so it would appear that Mint passes that test. But, the product also references downloading a driver. I will assume that would not be necessary as the Mint kernel appears compatible.
My principle interest in using the adapter is transfer files between an Android smartphone and the computer. Can this adapter do that? (I have been doing the file transfer by plugging the smartphone into the computer.)

I haven’t tried Edimax, but last month I got the TP-Link UB400 Bluetooth 4.0 USB dongle, and it works right out of the box. No separate driver needed.

Just earlier this evening, I ordered the TP-Link UB500 Bluetooth 5.0 USB dongle. I’ll receive it sometime tomorrow.
If the UB500 works right out of the box, it’s a winner.

I received two responses on my Amazon question. One said that the adapter can do file transfers. The other said that on their manjaro computer that no drivers were required. So I ordered the Edimax Bluetooth Adapter today.

It will be a few days before the adapter I ordered arrives. It will be interesting to compare post installation observations.

I’ve assisted others with their UB500 (Need help getting Bluetooth to work), so I knew that it has been problematic. That’s with Mint 20.
The TP-Link UB500 is functional right out of the box with Mint 21.

The Edimax Bluetooth Adapter arrived last night. It proved «difficult» to get it fully working. Most of that, I will attribute it to my lack of knowledge concerning Bluetooth. Eventually, I was able to successfully transfer files (back and forth) between my Galaxy S10e and the computer.
Pairing . Getting the Galaxy S10e to pair with the Edimax has been sporadic. Also it seemed that after a period of time, that the devices would disconnect. Almost acts as if the Edimax Bluetooth Adapter has a time limit. Maybe, as I experiment, the cause will be uncovered.
Transferring files . Transferring files from the Edimax to the computer was obvious in execution. So it was easy. However, what was not obvious was to send a file from the Galaxy S10e to the computer. While there was a «send» button on the computer, there was no «receive» button on the computer or a «send» button on the Galaxy S10. Once I ran across the answer, it was of course, obvious. This article provided me with the Android based solution: «How to Use Bluetooth to Transfer Files Between Devices»

What Terminal output does the lsusb command show for that Edimax dongle?

Some follow-up observations (10/20/2022).
1. Blueman seems to have the «trusted/untrusted» toggle backwards. Having the check-mark on untrusted works.
2. Distance (inside a structure) seems to have a significant negative impact. It appears that walls and the location of the Edimax on the back of the computer block the signal from reaching the Galaxy S10e. The negative impact of distance is expected.

I read the same article as the OP («The Best Bluetooth Dongle Linux») but ordered a different dongle it recommended.
I received the Kinivo Bluetooth 4 dongle and have the same pairing problem. I’m using it to connect to a Bluetooth keyboard which loses the pairing after a few hours.
