Bluetooth Interference with Headphones and keyboard

Connecting a BT keyboard with touchpad, and a the same time Sennheiser headphones.

All pair OK, BUT using the touchpad while listening on the headphones interrupts the sound.

Typing on the keyboard is fine.

Is this to be expected, or if not any ideas on where to start looking?

Bluetooth relies on the use of device profiles to differentiate what is connected and assign the channels used. If the keyboard is using multiple channels — 1 for keys, and 1 for touchpad, but is not registering the touchpad with a BT profile, the touchpad may be using an interfering channel. I use to see this in older bluetooth input devices where chinese mfg’s woudl try and cheat the bluetooth hardware profiles to get multiple connections to work.

Hi Stevengardener, In Windows 10, click on Settings from the Start menu and then click on Devices. Click on Typing in the left-hand pane and then go to the section that is titled Touch Keyboard. You’ll see the Play key sounds as I type option there. That’s about it! Note that if you are using Windows on a PC and you have the on screen keyboard enabled, it will also play clicking sounds when you press the buttons. You can disable the clicking sound there by clicking on the Options button on the keyboard. Now you can just uncheck the Use click sound check box. Hope that helps!

Perhaps I explained my problem badly. Keyboard with built in touchpad (3rd party, not MS) and Headphones both connecting via Bluetooth. When listening to audio on the headphones, using the touchpad causes the sound to break up. stop start. Typing on the keys is fine. No issues IF using the Microsoft direct/physically connected Type-cover, keys or touchpad. Nothing to do with key-clicks. Seems to be some sort of interference or competition between the touchpad and Headphones on the BT channel. Maybe this is to be expected over BT when you have 2 devices sending larger streams of data. Note neither the keyboard or headphones use any special drivers or BT devices (as far as I can see). Anyone tried a BT mouse and music on a BT headset/phones at the same time?

Oh I see! OK, I’ve got a BT keyboard, mouse and headphones and they all work fine. I don’t have a Surface though, but using Windows 10. I guess it could be down to the bandwidth of the devices.
A bit old school, but have you got a USB BT dongle? Not ideal, but at least you could test with it and see if you have the same issue and it will give you bit more of an answer — BT receiver in your Surface or just bandwidth.
If it’s the BT receiver on your Surface, it may be worth making sure the drivers you have on your Surface are the latest, by the looks of it they come as package. https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=49498 Opens a new window
If not, maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling the BT driver? . Computer Management > Device Manager > Find Bluetooth in the list uninstall then re-install?

Well I guess you have told me a good part of what I need to know! If you operate a mouse and headphones on BT with no problem, then looks like it is an issue with the Surface BT adapter. All drivers are updated automatically, so I doubt it’s just that (but will check anyway). Odd that I don’t see any problem using the Surface pen, which is also a BT device and should also be sending a lot of data. So off to experiment a bit more.

it could be the bt keyboard. if it uses multiple channels internally to differentiate between the keyboard and touchpad, it may only be registering the keyboard frequency with the bt receiver. bt has 80 channels to work with in the two frequency bands.
