Connect Smartphone to Home Stereo or Car Audio System
Our smartphones now carry much more information about ourselves then any other phones ever had. And a big part of that information is our music collection. It most probably occupies the biggest part of the SD card on our smartphone, and we would like to listen to it anywhere and anytime. And a part of our day where we would want to listen to our music is when we drive in our cars, going from place to place, but also in our home, when we like to plug in our smartphones to the audio system and start relaxing.
Listen to Smartphone Music in Car and at Home
If you ever wanted to do this, then feel relieved because it’s more simple then you might think. There are a few options that work with your existing audio system, the old fashioned one, with just a few modifications. Of course, newer models of car stereos or home audio systems already have Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connectivity and can be connected to many devices such as smartphones and tablets.
Depending on which device you want to connect your smartphone, there are a few options available. If you want to connect your smartphone to your car’s stereo so you can listen to music via the car’s speakers, you have a few options.
1. Connect Smartphone To Car With Bluetooth
In order to do so, your stereo must have Bluetooth integrated. Newer models, sometimes called smart radios now have this feature integrated. From here, the process is very simple. Just turn on the Bluetooth in the car radio and search for it from your device. You will have to pair the devices, and in the majority of stereos, the pairing PIN code is written in the manual. Once you’ve done this, your device will always connect to the radio when you start it.
If you are looking for specialized devices, then you might look for something like the PARROT ASTEROID car stereo, that allows you to connect via Bluetooth your Android smartphone or iOS device to it. It features a great LCD display and a 4x55W MOSFET audio amplifier.
Pioneer also provides such devices, what they call “AppRadio” devices, like the DEH-6300UB stereo, such as which work both on Android and iOS and allow you to extend the smartphone’s flexibility and features to the car’s audio system and much more.
2. Purchase a Bluetooth Device
Many smartphone manufacturers offer these devices that allow you to connect your smartphone to the car’s audio system. They connect via audio cable to the stereo and via Bluetooth to the smartphone. Blackberry offers the Music Gateway device that does exactly this, but you can find other aftermarket devices, such as Grooveshark radio transmitter, that allows you to pair your Android device to your car’s radio. Also, Belkin offers a great car AUX system for connecting your smartphone to your car’s audio system.
3. Connect Via USB or AUX
This is by far the simplest solution and the cheapest possible. All you have to do is connect your smartphone to the car stereo via the AUX port, using a “male-to-male” 3.5” jack connector. Plug in one end to your smartphone and the other to the AUX port on your stereo. To use the USB cable, the process is similar, but your stereo has to have USB connectivity integrated. The process is the same as with the AUX cable.
These are the main ways to connect your smartphone to your car’s audio system. If, on the other hand you want to listen to your tunes on your home sound system, then you can use the above methods of connecting your device, via the USB or AUX cables, both supported on most home sound systems, and also some high end models have wireless connectivity. Also, if you own a smart TV, then you can use Streaming Apps to stream audio and video to your TV and audio system.
Of course, for older sound systems you can find converters for analog signal. These are 3.5” jack to AV analog cables. A very cheap solution but a pretty good one.
Also, you can find great products that work very good at connecting devices in your home, such as:
BoomBoom 75
This device allows you to connect smartphones, tablets or laptops to any audio system that supports AUX connection via a Bluetooth pair.
Apple AirPort Express
This device allows you to connect multiple wireless enabled devices together, such as TVs, smartphones, audio systems or printers and use them from your iPhone.
Spotify devices
There are lots of devices that use spotify to connect and stream audio and video. Remoteless is one of these services and it can be used on both Android and iOS devices.
To make a long story short, there are lots of ways to connect your smartphone to either your car stereo or to your home sound system. Some are as simple as buying a jack to jack or jack to AV cable or a usb cable, and some more expensive, using smart radios and sound systems.

Connect your iPhone,Android, or Tablet to BlueTooth Home Stereo. Awesome!
If you have a spendy-trendy tablet, gadget, smart phone, PC or Mac you can easily connect it to your home stereo with a 2 way bluetooth adapter.
The intial product I ever used is the BlueTooth with the Sony HWSBTA2W. The initial product I used in this review ( years ago ) is no longer being manufactured, but there are new and cheaper models to achieve the same thing if you search amazon for 2 way Bluetooth Adapters.
Yes, with a Two-Way Bluetooth Adapter you can easily play any audio from your iPhone, iPad, Android, Xoom, WP7, Blackberry and many other tech gadgets to your home receiver. There are a few good and bad points of this device, which I will cover, but if you just want to play music (or sound from movies, Netflix, Hulu, or similar) you should definitely consider the Sony HWS-BTA2W available at Amazon and EBay for between $40-$55 USD. I own it, and it’s pretty sweet and can definitely fill your needs! Everything I own successfully connects to this bluetooth adapter, and pumps through my home stereo.
USEAGE OPTIONS / IDEAS
The way I use the Sony Bluetooth adapter, is mainly for music and audio streaming from video on my devices. For example, I use it to listen to music stored directly on my toys, or even Pandora, Zune, and Google Music. So, for music only you’re covered! I have a lot of devices, more than most, and I’m confident that musically you will be satisfied. Another cool way you can use this is to watch video on your iPad or Tablet, and stream the audio straight to your home stereo! I definitely do this a lot as well and you can too once your sweet little bluetooth adapter arrives in the mail! I use this not only for my Xoom tablet, and smart phones, but it also works with my Macbook Pro and PC as well. I hope I’m helping you use your imagination, but I think a majority of purchasers will use this for music streaming. Yet another option would be to connect this to your TV and stream the audio FROM your TV TO a set of Bluetooth Headphones for late night movie watching with a sleeping spouse.. So many options.
THE GOOD AND BAD
- GOOD: Connect a plethora of devices to your home stereo. Throw a kick-ass party using your phone, or enjoy video sound in style.
- GOOD: Although pricey, this is one of the lower cost methods to wireless stream audio to(or from) your home stereo system!
- BAD: A little Expensive. Expect $45-$55
- BAD: If you have multiple devices, you have to re-sync each time. Works with multiple devices, but requires a little extra elbow grease since you’ll have to do the below instructions if you flip-flop back and forth. If you only have 1 device, this is not a problem..
- Connect your HWSBTA2 to your home stereo with a stereo jack->analog(red,white)
- Plug in the HWSBTA2W Sony Bluetooth Adapter, turn it on, press and hold the “ID SET button” for about 8 seconds’ish. This will set the adapter into discovery mode.
- Grab yer device, turn on its Bluetooth and ensure it is ready to discover new devices!
- Once both devices are on and ready to talk, your phone/tablet/pc will find the Sony adapter.
- Your device will ask for the super-secret-magic password which is “OOOO” ( 4-Zeroes )
- BAM ! Now your audio will stream from your device to your home stereo! ( make sure your input settings set on your home stereo )

How Can I Play Music From My Phone Through My Home Stereo?
Smartphones offer a really great way of streaming and storing your music collection, but that doesn’t mean that your home stereo system can’t still be useful. You don’t have to put up with inferior quality sounds; a few simple steps will allow you to play music through your stereo and make use of the equipment you have invested in. You may not be using your stereo to play as many CDs these days, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be of daily use.
In simple terms, streaming from a phone to a home stereo system will involve buying a few extra parts, making some wireless or hardwired connections and configuring your devices. Your first choice will be determining what method you will use to connect your phone to your home stereo system.
Bluetooth adapter
Using a Bluetooth adapter is one of the easiest ways to pair your smartphone with your home stereo system. It is rare to find a smartphone without Bluetooth connectivity these days and, as a result, Bluetooth adapters or receivers are more accessible and affordable than ever before.
Most of these adapters will connect to your receiver, amplifier or stereo system using a 3.5cm digital optical or RCA cable. You should check if you need to buy this separately when you choose your Bluetooth adapter. You will also need a power source for your adapter. This could be a wall plug or a USB cable. Some may also use battery power. Once powered up, you simply need to pair the adapter with your smartphone and you will quite literally have audio control in the palm of your hand.
Just remember that standard Bluetooth wireless will have a top range of ten meters or 33 feet. This can also be reduced by line of sight, objects, and walls. Some adapters do offer extended reach, however, so this is something to look at if distance is likely to be an issue. Some adapters can extend the reach of your Bluetooth wireless to as much as double the usual distance.
It is also worth noting that you may want to ensure that you use an aptX-compatible product if you want to do all you can to make sure you don’t lose any sound quality. This can result from the data compression involved with Bluetooth, although the effects will depend on your audio source.
There are Bluetooth adapters out there that offer all sorts of different features and come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. That is why it is a good idea to shop around and find the adapter that best meets your individual needs.
Digital stream players
There are some excellent digital stream players out there that will connect your smartphone to your home stereo system. These include the Blue Sound Node2i Digital Stream Player and the Sonos Port Music Streamer. These digital streamers boast a variety of features and can allow you to stream your digital collection and access cloud music services and internet radio stations. Many offer wireless, intuitive control apps and allow you to sync music using a variety of players around your home.
Wireless adapters
If audio quality is of primary importance, you may want to consider a wireless adapter that can offer a longer range without compression. You must, however, make sure that you get a product that is compatible with your smartphone. AirPlay, for example, will only work with Apple products. There are adapters that feature support for different set-ups, however, including Play-Fi, DLNA, and general Wi-Fi connectivity.
Audio cables
One of the most basic ways to connect your smartphone to your home stereo system is using a 3.5 mm to RCA stereo audio cable. One end plugs into your smartphone’s headphone jack, and the RCA connections connect the stereo amplifier, receiver, or speaker. This will offer good sound quality with no worries about wireless interference, compression, or compatibility. The cable length will limit the range, however.
Smartphone dock
These are less popular than they once were, but there are still universal docks available that can connect to your audio system while also being able to charge your phone. You may decide on a dock that is specific to your mobile device, but there are also universal docks available that can be used with a wide range of different smartphones. These can offer a convenient and practical way of linking your phone and home stereo system.
