What is Bluetooth 4.0?
Bluetooth is a technology people know but don’t necessarily love. That’s because Bluetooth gadgets can be tough to pair, and they tend to run out of juice too quickly. Bluetooth 4.0—or Bluetooth Smart—gives the standard a brain transplant. The new specification uses improved technology that helps everyday gadgets stay paired longer while using less power. Plus, Bluetooth 4.0 enables a new class of gadgets such as fitness trackers, medical devices, key fobs for your car, and even home lighting controls.

How is Bluetooth 4.0 Different?
This generation of Bluetooth is split into two groups: Bluetooth Smart Ready and Bluetooth Smart. To understand why the tech has been split, you first have to look at the challenges facing Bluetooth as we know it. Those challenges are battery drain and the constant pairing and re-pairing of connected gadgets.
Bluetooth 4.0 is designed to be more intelligent (hence: Bluetooth Smart) about managing those connections, especially when it comes to conserving energy. The new generation of Bluetooth tech places less emphasis on maintaining a constant stream of information. Instead, it focuses on sending smaller bits of data when needed and then puts the connection to sleep during periods of non-use.
When two 4.0 devices are paired, they waste less battery power because the connection is dormant unless critical data is being shared. With the previous generation of Bluetooth, it was best to shut down your hardware when it was not in use. Now the Bluetooth Special Interest Group estimates between 1 and 2 years of battery power in some devices with Bluetooth 4.0.
What is Bluetooth Smart Ready?
Bluetooth Smart Ready gadgets are primary devices—think smartphones, notebooks, and tablets—that can receive and share Bluetooth signals from such accessories as speakers, headphones, fitness accessories, and even medical tools such as heart-rate monitors and electronic thermometers. Think of Bluetooth Smart Ready devices as a mothership, waiting to send and receive data from smaller drone ships around it.
What is Bluetooth Smart?
Using that analogy, the drone ships are Bluetooth Smart devices. These peripherals connect to Bluetooth Smart Ready smartphones, tablets, and notebooks. Bluetooth Smart gadgets can also remain paired with Smart Ready devices even when they’re not used for hours or days at a time. Thanks to Bluetooth 4.0’s emphasis on wake and sleep modes, Smart peripherals that aren’t in use can remain in sleep mode indefinitely; they can also wake from that sleep mode in an instant, paired and ready to share data with a Smart Ready tablet, notebook, or smartphone.
For instance, a heart monitor can be worn for hours yet only send data to a Smart Ready smartphone when a heart rate reaches a certain number of beats per minute during exercise. Likewise, a wireless thermometer can remain paired for days, but it will send temperature readings to a notebook only when that device is used to take a child’s temperature.
Does Bluetooth 4.0 Make Existing Bluetooth Products Obsolete?
Newer laptops, phones, and slates with Bluetooth Smart Ready radios built in will work with previous-generation Bluetooth peripherals. Essentially, if you have a Bluetooth Smart Ready smartphone or notebook, you can still use it to stream podcasts to your Bluetooth 3.0 wireless speaker system or headphones. So no need to throw out those headsets or portable speakers.
On the other hand, Bluetooth Smart peripherals only work with a Smart Ready counterpart. So if you want to take advantage of Bluetooth 4.0’s new low-power capabilities, get ready to go shopping—you’ll need a new Bluetooth Smart Ready phone, computer, or tablet in addition to a Bluetooth Smart accessory or peripheral.
What Products are Available with Bluetooth 4.0?
As of press time, the Apple MacBook Air and the Mac Mini desktop were the only Bluetooth Smart Ready computers. Compatible smartphones include the Motorola Droid RAZR and the Apple iPhone 4S.
Some Bluetooth Smart peripherals include the MotoACTV fitness tracker and music player, as well as an exercise heart-rate monitor from fitness gadget manufacturer Dayton Industrial. The Bluetooth SIG expects nearly every new smartphone and notebook shipping this year to include a Smart Ready radio.
The Bluetooth SIG told us that many Bluetooth Smart peripherals will be released in 2012, including wireless 3D glasses, home entertainment remote controls, and medical devices. The Bluetooth SIG also hopes to see Bluetooth expand into ovens, refrigerators, thermostats, and lighting systems. If that happens, dimming the lights or checking on the turkey could be a simple matter of using an app on your phone.

Что такое полная и обратная совместимость стандартов
Согласно стандартам, принятым в сфере высоких технологий вообще и компьютерных комплектующих в частности новая версия любого протокола должна обеспечивать обратную совместимость с предыдущими ревизиями.
Применительно к Блютуз это значит, что девайс нового поколения должен поддерживать все опции, которые были в предыдущих ревизиях технологии, и выполнять все функции, обозначенные стандартом.
Это значит, что любой новый телефон или ноутбук можно использовать со старой гарнитурой или беспроводной колонкой, и все дополнительные опции оборудования должны быть доступны. Это не какая-то «идеальная ситуация в вакууме» — при невыполнении этого требования девайс не пройдет сертификацию и не сможет продаваться легально.
В ситуации разработчиков, которые немного «не дотянули» до стандарта, проще продолжить разработку и таки довести до толку новый товар, чем продавать его нелегально. Это чревато не только судебными разбирательствами и огромными штрафами, но и непрямыми убытками, так как возможности продать больше существенно ограничены.
Именно по этой причине все ревизии Bluetooth из этого списка:

cовместимы между собой, однако не на любом девайсе будут доступны все опции, поддерживаемые определенной версией протокола беспроводной передачи данных. В первую очередь, ограничения касаются скорости передачи данных и расстояния, на котором два устройства не теряют связи.
Полная совместимость означает, что на двух девайсах с поддержкой одинаковой версии протокола беспроводной связи, должны корректно работать все функции, указанные в спецификации.
Естественно, на их доступность зависит и от типа устройства — например, с помощью беспроводных наушников, не оборудованных микрофоном, и нормально поговорить по телефону не получится.
Немного о совместимости оборудования
Однако на всякое наше «зато» найдется «но» со стороны конкретного бренда. Даже если версии Блютуз совместимы, не факт, что корректно законнектятся два девайса определенных моделей.
Связано это, прежде всего с тем, что некоторые производители предпочитают, чтобы к их устройствам пользователи покупали только «родные» аксессуары, увеличивая тем самым прибыль.
Больше всех этой тенденции подвержена компания Apple, чьё навязывание фирменных гаджетов можно считать эталонным. Однако и между другими брендами могут быть договора, и определенная марка телефона будет работать только с определенными наушниками из конкретного списка.

Bluetooth SMART (or Bluetooth Low Energy) is a wireless communication technology.
Its distinguishing feature is its capacity to communicate using very little power.
That’s why it is increasingly featured in portable devices such as smartwatches, trackers and GPS watches.
What’s the difference between Bluetooth and Bluetooth smart ?
Bluetooth SMART differs from «traditional» Bluetooth. The traditional version uses far more power and allows a greater rate of transfer. That’s why it is commonly used in appliances such as headphones or hands-free kits.
Its pairing mode is also different.
Bluetooth SMART products don’t appear in the Bluetooth device lists of smartphones. They require you to download an app.
They can only be paired to your phone via this app!

To make sure your waistband will work with your smartphone, it’s important to check that the waistband is compatible with your phone, your operating system (OS) and also your app. These days, most apps are compatible with the Bluetooth Smart heart rate monitor waistbands.

Is bluetooth 4.0 backwards compatible with bluetooth 2.0+EDR?
I have been unable to find an answer for this. The last spec I seem to find that mentions backward compatibility is 2.1.

They are backward compatible. But — since each version brings new functionalities with it, only the basic function set is backward compatible all the way, see the table for more detail. In addition to that 2 devices wanting to communicate using bluetooth have to support the same profile(s), the full piece that i copy/pasted from here.
I have a big doubt about the honesty of this table. I tested two smartphones, one in BT3, the other in BT4 , with 3 cars (old> = 10 years). The BT3 works perfectly on 3 cars. The BT4 did not work on 3 cars. But it may be a problem due to Android ..
This is because the old cars are probably Bluetooth 3 single mode and it is not compatible with Bluetooth 4 single mode. You need to test Bluetooth 4 dual mode.
Not if it is «Smart»
In general, Bluetooth is backwards compatible: Bluetooth devices supporting the just-announced Bluetooth 4.2 standard should still be able to pair with devices using, say, the ancient Bluetooth 2.1, launched back in 2007.
The exception are gadgets or peripherals based on the low-energy version called Bluetooth Smart. The protocol of Bluetooth Smart differs from that of older, so-called «Classic» Bluetooth devices. Bluetooth Smart devices are not backwards compatible and will not recognise nor pair with older devices supporting Classic Bluetooth. For example, an old Sony Ericsson phone sporting Bluetooth 3.0 will not be able to connect to a Bluetooth Smart device.
However, if a device supports Bluetooth 4.0, it can potentially recognise both Bluetooth Smart and Classic. If it does, it is officially labelled Bluetooth Smart Ready.
Personal health gadgets such as fitness bands and heart-rate monitors commonly employ Bluetooth Smart. These gadgets will only pair with smartphones or tablets that are Bluetooth Smart or Bluetooth Smart Ready.
