Why do my Macbook Pro’s WiFi speeds drop significantly when paired with Bluetooth devices?

NOTE: This question is NOT a duplicate of Bluetooth and Wifi interfering with one another since Yosemite. That answer pertains to 1) The 2.4 GHz band only and 2) Yosemite only.

Background:

Though currently I’m running Yosemite (10.10.3), I have consistently experienced this issue since purchasing my Macbook Pro (Late 2013, originally running Mavericks). Whether it be a bluetooth mouse, headphones, or even iPhone, whenever I pair a device with my Macbook Pro, my Wifi speeds (running on 5 GHz band) drop by at least %50. I can reproduce this issue repeatedly. It only occurs when a device is paired via bluetooth to the machine. It does not occur when bluetooth is simply enabled on my computer. At this point, I just don’t connect devices via bluetooth anymore since the WiFi drop is noticeable. I am using a Logitech nano receiver mouse (and using up one of my precious two 🙁 USB ports in the process) rather than using a Bluetooth mouse. Machine Specs:

Troubleshooting:

I’ve ruled out my LAN set-up:

  • I use a TP-LINK Archer C8 Router connected to a modem provided by my ISP (running in bridge mode). I use the 5 GHz band exclusively. To rule out any band interference, I’ve tested the WiFi speed on the 2.4 GHz band as well. The same drop occurs regardless of the band.
  • I’ve used my ISP’s modem as a Gateway to directly connect to the internet (to rule out the TC-Link Router as the cause). Same result.

I’ve isolated the issue to that of a Wireless one.

There is no speed drop when my machine uses a wired connection (Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter > Ethernet Cable > WAN)

I’ve ruled out a specific Bluetooth device as the cause:

Originally, I thought the issue was with my Logitech M557 mouse. I tested my Magic Mouse instead. Both yielded the same drop in Wifi speed. The same has gone for any device that I paired with my MBP — Apple brand or not. Sidenote: I’ve unpaired the devices after testing. I only have one device paired (though not actively connected).

I’ve ruled out third party software:

The issue persists without any third party kernel extensions loaded. Additionally, with no other third party software running (Dropbox, for example).

I’ve ruled out a specific OS X:

This issue has occurred since purchase, in Dec 2013. Across OS X Mavericks — Yosemite. Additionally, the machine has had a clean install of OS X from a fresh Yosemite image.

I’ve ruled out my Macbook Pro’s hardware:

I ran the Apple Diagnostic Test, repeated times, with no error codes. On a separate issue (blown out builtin speaker recently), I had brought my machine into Apple. I had them run their in-house diagnostic test to confirm no BT related hardware issues. Additionally, as stated, this issue has been a problem from Day 1.

My Question:

Why does my Macbook Pro’s WiFi speed drop by 50+% when paired with any Bluetooth device? Is there a solution?

Can not share WiFi from Macbook Pro to other devices via Bluetooth PAN

First of all, this problem is detailed in this discussion at Apple’s forum. I basically have the exactly same problem. Status indicator is always yellow under «Bluetooth PAN» in Network Panel. The status says: Bluetooth PAN has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet. I tried on both iPad and Android devices, doesn’t work. There is an icon on the upper left corner of iPad indicates connected to Bluetooth PAN. However, there is no internet access. Any suggestions on this issue?

I ran into the same problem when reverse tethering my Samsung phone (Android 5.1.1) to access the Internet connection on my Macbook Air (El Capitan), and found a successful solution:

  1. Make sure your mobile device is paired via Bluetooth and follow Heiko Haller’s steps for Internet Sharing settings.
  2. Under System Preferences > Network, select the active Internet connection (e.g., USB LAN) and note the IP Address, Subnet Mask and Router numbers.
  3. Select Bluetooth PAN in the same Network window, click the Advanced button in the lower right to open its configuration panel.
  4. Under the TCP/IP tab, select ‘Manually’ from the Configure IPv4 drop-down menu, and copy the information from Step 2 in the three relevant fields.
  5. Select ‘Link-local only’ next to Configure IPv6.
  6. Click OK to close the Bluetooth PAN panel, hit Apply in the Network window.
  7. On the mobile device, go to Settings > Bluetooth and click on the cog icon next to the paired Macbook and turn on ‘Internet access’.

It’s been a couple of hours and so far, the connection seems stable. Edit: An incoming regular call broke the connection, and unpairing and re-pairing the device appear to have restored it. Edit2: The IP Address and Router numbers may change each time you connect to the Internet, so be sure to update the Bluetooth PAN settings accordingly.

Wifi/Bluetooth in Windows10 on MacBook Pro 2017

I recently purchased my first Mac, a MacBook Pro 15″ 2017. I absolutely LOVE it. However, I have worked out all the little glitches except one, and it is driving me mad.

In Windows if I connect to my home wifi, it is constant laggy, disconnecting and reconnecting, etc. In MacOS, it works perfectly. I’ve taken it to friend’s houses as well as Internet Cafes, same thing. The wifi has no problem in MacOS but is constantly disconnecting and reconnecting/lagging in Windows. In what seems to be a connected issue, I cannot pair my Bluetooth mouse (Razer Orochi) to Windows either. It lags and constantly disconnects the same as the wifi, which makes me believe the two are connected.

I have been searching both here and elsewhere on the net exhaustively and although many people have posted with the same issue in the last year or two, I haven’t been able to find a single post that explained how/if they solved it. Everyone seems to zone in to the Broadcom 801.11ac Network Adapter driver. I have tried both the current .73 and rolling it back to the previous .68 and neither solve the issue.

As far as I know I have done everything correctly, I fully updated the Mac, saved a copy of the Bootcamp software to a thumb drive, did the Windows 10 install through Bootcamp and installed the Bootcamp software.

I would be delighted to hear any suggestions or provide any further information that might help uncover the issue.

I appreciate I am trying to run a Windows operating system on a Mac. But surely the basics of wifi connection and bluetooth functions should be a given, or am I over looking something? Is the Windows Bootcamp flawed and faulty? If anyone has a fix or suggestion, please comment.

Mac Mini M1 2020 Wifi — Inconsistent & slower than my other Apple devices Hello, I recently purchased an M1 Mac Mini and it works perfectly aside from one significant feature: the wifi. The wifi is extremely inconsistent and just drops randomly from time-to-time. Even when it is running consistently, I run Internet speedtests side-by-side with both my iPhone 12 & MacBook Pro 2018 sat literally right beside the Mac Mini, both the iPhone & Macbook get download speeds of 18-20Mbps but the Mini tops out at 8Mbps. I’ve absolutely no idea why. My OS is completely up-to-date. I’ve tried several of the Bluetooth resets/folder renaming advice on this community board but nothing has worked — the issue remains. Is it just an issue with the Mac Mini’s with M1 Chips? I’ve seen quite a few issues regarding slower Wifi online. I’d be happy to return the device to Apple to fix it however more than likely I’ll be told the device is working fine as there are absolutely no issues with anything else and the Wifi is of course still usable, it is just incredibly frustrating that the other devices don’t have the issue and this brand new Mac Mini does. Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone can provide.

Wifi and Bluetooth won’t work anymore «Hardware not available», Macbook Pro Early 2011, High Sierra Dear community, I’m working on my Macbook Pro Early 2011 on High Sierra 10.13.6 I know it very old, but it still runs smoothyl, I changed to an SSD hard disk, increased the RAM some time ago, so everything is fine. A further iOS update was not possible anymore however. Yesterday, out of a sudden Bluetooth did not work anymore, it says «Blootooth not available». The Bluetooth sign has a bar through it. I cannot activate it. Now today, Wifi is not working anymore, it says «no hardware installed» and the Wifi symbol shows an «X», I cannot activate it. I really don’t know what to do.
