Brutal Doom on Linux, the easy way

Brutal Doom on Linux, the easy way for The Ultimate DOOM

This guide tries to show step by step how to setup Brutal Doom on Linux without suffering all the obscure nonsense some articles tell you to do (such as compilling a whole doom engine fork from github… seriously?).You’ll end up having a Steam library entry, popping a short list of wad files to load, and will even enjoy a brutal experience with Steam Overlay enabled. This has been tested on Ubuntu 12.10 aka Utopic Unicorn (but should be relevant to any Linux distribution).

How to setup Brutal Doom on Linux (Ubuntu in particular)

  1. Install Zandronum
  2. Get your WAD files, Brutal Doom and its Metal Soundtrack
  3. Create a script file, link it with a desktop file and add it to Steam
  4. .
  5. Profit!

This is the trickiest part of that guide, as Zandronum may not be in your distribution’s default repositories. Zandronum should be packaged on a specific gaming repository however.

Installing Zandronum on Ubuntu (or other Debian-based distributions) is pretty simple, as you only have to add a repository, as described here:

  • You’ll either need Doom, Doom 2 or the two Final Doom WADs to play with Brutal Doom enabled, so you can just buy them on Steam.
  • Grab Brutal Doom on ModDB…
  • …along with the Metal Volume 4 Soundtrack:
  • Unpack the two zip files.

Create some directories and empty files, by executing in a terminal:

mkdir -p ~/.bin ~/.local/share/zandronum touch ~/.bin/brutal_doom.sh `xdg-user-dir DESKTOP`/Brutal_Doom.desktop chmod +x ~/.bin/brutal_doom.sh `xdg-user-dir DESKTOP`/Brutal_Doom.desktop

Brutal Doom

By default this installer includes Freedoom v0.12.1 Phase 1 and 2. If you wish to load other WAD files you can place them in install directory.

Brütal Doom takes Doom into a whole new level. It makes the game much more violent than before. There’s much more blood, plus it adds unique gibs, death animations, dismemberments, headshots, executions, fire and explosion particles, flares, shadows over all objects, and much more.
The whole world becomes more real and interactive. You can kick severed limbs and heads (and sometimes, use it to activate some traps in the map earlier, or even kick them against enemies to do some damage), you can shoot enemies’ heads to deal more damage (and cause more gruesome deaths) you can destroy most things in the the scenario (trees, lamps, hanging bodies, etc), you can paint the floor, the walls, and even the ceiling with blood, you can push the explosive barrels to make traps, or grab them and use like an explosive weapon, you can silently take down enemies from behind and perform stealth kills, the chainsaw actually cuts the enemies in two. When you find the berserk pack and get super strength, you can perform cinematic executions and RIP AND TEAR your foes with your bare hands. Some enemies will scream in anguish and try to crawl away when near death, and they can be used as human shields, and much, much more
