Installing driver for Canon LBP6000

Post by BaldBob » Tue Oct 27, 2015 5:06 pm

My system recognized my printer, but the printer won’t print, as I think that my system didn’t have the proper driver available. I have downloaded the driver that Canon says is for Linux, but as a total Linux newbie I haven’t a clue as to how to install it. I’m running Mint Cinnamon17.02.

how did you install the printer? there is no need to install from cannon.
i see its only usb?

i can direct you how to install drivers, but first lets try to see if we can get it working without using cannon specific drivers from there site.

update: you might need to update your kernel, go to the . update manager->view—>linux kernels.
i recommend update to the latest 3.16.0-xx or the max in the updater 3.19.0-xx.

I had kernel 3.16-38 (3.16.7-ckt 11). I just updated to 3.19.0-31, but still can’t print from that printer. I get a message that it «could not start that printer — please check printer configuration». I don’t remember doing anything to install the printer other than plugging it into a USB port. The system recognized that I had that printer as well as an all-in one HP that I can print from wirelessly. I ‘ll check out the other forum tomorrow AM — going to bed now

Pjotr, Thanks for responding, but the instructions on that site say they are for Canon Pixima (ink jet) printers only. My printer is a Laser printer.

reddot, I had been to that site earlier, but I am so much a newbie that the instructions in that discussion totally confused me. When they start talking about configuring CUPS vs direct connection I get lost.

Pjotr guide is very similar and excellent, you can apply it, it does not mean you need to have the exact model, just brand, from the looks.
the guide i gave you is old. things change rapidly in the pc world. get the drivers if you have not, from canon DIRECTLY.
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/ . ndSoftware

extract Linux_CAPT_PrinterDriver_V270_us_EN.tar.gz, you can «extract here» with right click on the file.

i downloaded the drivers to my desktop. go to this directory for 64bit drivers, they need to be extensions «.deb»

/home/username/Desktop/Linux_CAPT_PrinterDriver_V270_us_EN/64-bit_Driver/Debian
/home/username/Desktop/Linux_CAPT_PrinterDriver_V270_us_EN/32-bit_Driver/Debian

once your inside the correct folder for your linux mint architecture (x86=32bit / x64=64bit) you can manually open each and install them, there are two packages.
only install one architecture, not both. no need for that.

64bit packages.
cndrvcups-capt_2.70-1_amd64.deb
cndrvcups-common_3.20-1_amd64.deb

32bit packages.
cndrvcups-capt_2.70-1_i386.deb
cndrvcups-common_3.20-1_i386.deb

if you cannot install each one by one. then right click inside the folder containing the drivers (with the two packages)—>>open in terminal—>>paste code and press enter.

Openprinting classifies it as a paperweight . But who knows, maybe somebody here will know something more about it. I used to say that Canon printers come in three varieties: paperweight, doorstop, boat anchor.

Re: canon image class lbp 6000: Canon supply the UFR driver as a debian package

Post by pdc_2 » Fri Apr 14, 2017 11:29 pm

So hi Mark; I thought this would be the UFR driver from Canon; but it uses the CAPT driver;

I think we can get this working for you; we have a LBP like you; we have 64bit Mint 18.1 and the CAPT driver works beautifully for us;

they supply it as 32bit and 64bit; in Debian and rpm packages; so can you tell us which you have please; so I can guide you

get the driver from here http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/cont . 59601.html and it comes down as Linux_CAPT_PrinterDriver_V270_uk_EN.tar.gz . click to SAVE it and it should end up in your Downloads folder

we need you to open a terminal . are you happy with that? It’s the TV screen on the bottom bar; and PASTE is right-click at the text prompt; and select paste .

but first if we wait there to hear from you if you have 64bit .

my system is x64 cinnamon

maybe i did something that created this problem without knowing it

1) install the drivers
2) register the printer with lpadmin . ( admin for linux printing)
3) register with ccpd daemon

. that is just asking the system to LIST what files it has of the cndrvcups type . you should see cndrvcups-common_3.20-1_amd64.deb and cndrvcups-capt_2.70-1_amd64.deb . if you do if we go to the next stage

2) Register the printer with lpadmin

sudo /usr/sbin/lpadmin -p LBP6000 -P /usr/share/cups/model/CNCUPSLBP6018CAPTK.ppd -v ccp://localhost:59787 -E

. that registers it on lpadmin

3) Register the printer in the ccpd daemon setup file

sudo /usr/sbin/ccpdadmin -p LBP6000 -o /dev/usb/lp0

. that assumes you have only one printer via usb and it is the LBP6000;

. then we start up the ccpd daemon

and you could try and print; I find that Mint will make a go of installing its version of the LBP: so have more than one . so have a look in the PRINTERS folder; right-click on each entry: . look in PROPERTIES and remember to use the one
. that has DEVICE URI of
