Celluloid (formerly GNOME MPV) is a simple GTK+ frontend for mpv. Celluloid interacts with mpv via the client API exported by libmpv, allowing access to mpv’s powerful playback capabilities.

Ubuntu users can use this PPA to get more up-to-date versions of Celluloid.

Flatpak packages support multiple distributions and are sandboxed. Flatpak 0.9.5+ is recommended for best integration.

Stable releases are hosted on Flathub:

Stable releases are hosted on Snapcraft:

Run the following command in the source code directory to build and install:

meson setup build && cd build && ninja && sudo ninja install

There are 4 ways to open files in Celluloid.

  1. Passing files and/or URIs as command line arguments.
  2. Using the file chooser dialog box, accessible via the «Open» menu item.
  3. Typing URI into the «Open Location» dialog box, accessible via the menu item with the same name.
  4. Dragging and dropping files or URIs onto Celluloid.

The playlist is hidden by default. To show the playlist, click the «Playlist» menu item or press F9. Files can be added by dragging and dropping files or URIs onto the playlist. Dropping files or URIs onto the video area will replace the content of the playlist. Playlist files or online playlists (eg. YouTube’s playlist) will be automatically expanded into individual items when loaded.

Items in the playlist can be reordered via drag-and-drop. To remove items from the playlist, select the item by clicking on it then press the delete button on your keyboard.

Celluloid can be configured using the preferences dialog accessible via the «Preferences» menu item. Additional configuration options can be set from an external file using the same syntax as mpv’s mpv.conf . See mpv’s manual for the full list of options. The file must be specified and enabled in the preferences dialog under the «MPV Configuration» section.

It is also possible to set mpv options by putting the options — as you would pass to mpv on the command line — in Extra MPV Options text box in the preferences dialog. You can also pass options directly on the command line by adding mpv- prefix to the option name. For example, using the option —mpv-vf=flip when launching Celluloid is equivalent to using —vf=flip in mpv.

Celluloid can use most mpv user scripts as-is. Some user scripts may define keybindings that conflict with Celluloid, in which case you’ll need to resolve the conflict by explicitly defining new keybindings using input.conf . See mpv’s manual for more details.

User scripts can be installed by switching to the «Plugins» tab in the preferences dialog and dropping the files there. A list of mpv user scripts can be found here.

Celluloid defines a set of keybindings in the macro DEFAULT_KEYBINDS , which can be found in src/celluloid-def.h. The syntax used is exactly the same as mpv’s input.conf . These keybindings are applied on top of default keybindings provided by mpv.

Additional keybindings can be defined in an external file using mpv’s input.conf syntax. The file can be set in the preferences dialog under the «Keybindings» section.

Celluloid uses Weblate to coordinate translations. You can find Celluloid’s page here.

While translating, you will find the string translator-credits . You should not translate this string. Instead, you should put your name, and optionally your email address, in the following format: FirstName LastName . Your name will then appear in the About dialog when your translation is active.

Celluloid, my mpv.conf file

Been playing around with performance tweaks to Celluloid . I still prefer smplayer but celluloid takes the same mpv settings.

You need to go into the celluloid preferences dialog to tell it to use the config file, the standard location for that is ~/.config/mpv/mpv.conf. That’s where mine is.

These settings work on the GPU in that machine, which has an Intel HD 4600 GPU, gen7 Haswell series. Older cards may not work so well with these settings, in fact you may need to use vo=xv for really old ones (eg pre gen6 Intel cards), and I don’t think the profile=gpu-hq setting works unless you have at least OpenGL 3.0 support.

Newer/more powerful cards could likely use more high performance settings.

All this is from the manual at https://mpv.io/manual/stable/, I highly suggest reading it, you’ll need to to find good settings for other video cards..

# The vo=gpu setting is actually setting the default driver. You should generally use this except with really old gpus. vo=gpu # need at least Op0enGL 3 support for this profile=gpu-hq # Scale sets the upsampling mode, the default is awful. Like many mpv settings it goes from sharper/less smooth # to smoother/blurrier. oversample is very smooth. There are other filters, see the manual. This setting [i]really[/i] # makes a difference with low res/low quality videos scale=oversample # this changes the default a/v sync mode, necessary for the next 2 filters to work video-sync=display-resample # good for eliminating jitter caused by video framerate/display framerate differences, necessary for the tscale filter to work interpolation # interpolates for frames, settings go from more sharp/less smooth to the opposite. linear is one of the sharper ones # but works really well with the video card in use tscale=linear # this is very useful, for some reason by default mpv won't normalize audio with multichannel audio audio-normalize-downmix=yes # pretty self explanatory, I find the default sub size ridiculously big sub-font-size=30 # not as good as smplayer's save position on quit function but essential for me save-position-on-quit

This doesn’t completely duplicate the way I have smplayer set up, but then I still use smplayer almost all of the time. Most importantly probably I use direct rendering in smplayer but you need at least OpenGL 4.4 for that. I also haven’t set mpv up with a nice big local file cache, which really helps. Again, read the manual.

BTW the mpv devs set hardware decoding off by default, for good reason. It’s more compatible with it off and you haven’t actually needed it for just playing video for about 20 years .

[Solved] Celluloid stutters but VLC plays well

I have a fresh installed Mint 20 with Cinnamon desktop.

My Problem is as follows: playing MP4 videos via Celluloid the playback ist stuttering extremely.
If I playback with VLC anything is fine. Nothing lags.

I performed «update» and «upgrade» — anything is up to date.

Below I post an inxi output. if more is required please let me know.
