Understanding Your Speed Test Results

Download

Peak: This entry represents the maximum amount of data per second that your device received from the network during the test.

Average: This entry represents the average amount of data your device received per second from the network during the test.

Upload

Peak: This entry represents the maximum amount of data your device sent per second to the network during the test.

Average: This entry represents the average amount of data your device sent per second to the network during the test.

Latency

Minimum: This entry represents the minimal time that takes for the signal to be sent from the device to the given server and then returned back to the device. Latency is often referred to as a ping rate.

Average: This entry represents the average time that takes for the signal to be sent from the device to the given server and then returned back to the device.

Jitter: This entry represents variance in the latency of signal transferred from device to device. It could negatively impact user experience when it is too high. High jitter can cause packet loss, and maintaining low packet loss (ideally 0% packet loss) is essential for some kinds of internet services, especially for voice calls or online gaming.

What is download speed?

Download speed means how fast internet users can retrieve data from a server or internet site to their devices (PC, mobile, tablet, etc.) online. Download speed is usually higher than upload speed, as most common internet activities are based on downloading (loading pages, downloading files, watching videos, etc.).

What is upload speed?

Upload speed means how quickly internet users can send data from their devices (PC, mobile, tablet, etc.) to the internet network. Upload speed is usually slower than download speed, as upload speed is usually less important for the common user. Most activities on the internet don’t require fast upload speeds. On the other hand, upload speed might be very important for users who upload a lot of data to services such as YouTube, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc. or for those who extensively use social networks by uploading a lot of media (photos, videos, etc.).

What are Ping and Latency?

Ping or Ping test refers to a reaction time of your device to respond to the request from another device. This information is specifically important for online game players (i.e., League of Legends, World of Warcraft, Battlefield), who need a low ping time (reaction time). High ping time means delay, which is a big disadvantage compared to the players with low ping time.

Latency or Latency test refers to a time it takes to send a ping (packet of data) from your device to the server and then receive it back to the device. Latency represents the round trip delay and has an important impact on the performance of the network. Latency is usually measured in milliseconds (ms).

What is a good internet speed?

It’s hard to say what is a good internet speed in general. In most cases, it depends on user activity. Internet speeds above 25Mbps should be enough for the most common online tasks, such as watching movies, playing basic games, or downloading small files. However, for advanced internet activities, such as downloading big files or playing games with higher demands for graphics, we recommend internet speeds above 60Mbps.

What internet speed do I need?

Be aware that most of the internet connections are slower than the speed which is advertised. A 100Mbps connection often means that 100Mbps is your maximum speed. Your speed at any moment could vary and will depend on a lot of factors. Always order an internet speed faster than you expect that you will need.

We have prepared some recommendations for casual activities that are based on the official minimum / recommended speed from official sources and based on our experiences. We increased speeds a little bit against official speeds, just to be sure there is enough room for your activities.

Activity Our recommendation Note
Watching Full HD movies on Netflix 10Mbps Official recommendations from Netlix here
Watching Ultra HD movies on Netflix 30Mbps Official recommendations from Netlix here
Online gaming 10Mbps
Skype voice-only call 1Mbps Official requirements from Skype here
Skype video call 10Mbps Official requirements from Skype here
Email 10Mbps
Surfing the web 10Mbps

If you are still asking yourself how much internet speed you need, then we recommend you to pick a 100Mbps internet connection (if it’s available in your area). With this speed of internet connection, you will be safe for a long period of time.

What is the average internet speed?

In the year 2020:

  • The US average internet speed was 71.30Mbps.
  • The global average broadband internet speed was 24.83Mbps.
  • 103 countries have average speeds below 10Mbps.
  • Liechtenstein had the fastest average internet speed in the world: 229.98Mbps.
  • South Sudan had the slowest average internet speed in the world: 0.58Mbps.

How to increase internet speed

We have a few tips on how to optimize an internet connection to get the most out of it:

  • Reduce the distance between your computer and your router.
  • Minimize the number of items on the network.
  • If possible, use an ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi.
  • Update your connection hardware.
  • Use a Wi-Fi range extender.

Glossary

Wi-Fi speed test

A lot of people are looking for a Wi-Fi speed test, but often what they really need is just an ordinary internet speed test. However, a Wi-Fi connection can significantly slow down your internet connection when your Wi-Fi router is very old or you have bad reception for its signal. The same applies to the terms:

  • modem speed test
  • network speed test
  • connection speed test
  • broadband speed test
  • … and many others for which you can use our speed test above

Bandwidth

In the context of internet speed, bandwidth refers to the volume of information per unit of time that an internet connection can handle. An internet connection with a bigger bandwidth can transfer a portion of data much faster than an internet connection with lower bandwidth.

DSL

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) uses an internet connection on an existing telephone network. DSL is highly popular in cities, but you find it less in rural areas. It’s one of the most common options for the internet connection today. DSL internet is usually cheaper than other types of internet connection, such as fiber optic or cable connections, but it’s also slower.

What is an internet speed test?

An internet speed test is an evaluation of your existing broadband parameters. A speed test works by sending a file from a speed test server and analyzing the time it takes to download the file onto your local device (computer, tablet, smartphone, etc.) and then upload it back to the server.

Why should I test my internet speed?

Running regular internet speed tests can help you better understand your connectivity performance trends and your connection’s maximum download and upload speeds. You may be paying for an internet connection with WiFi speeds higher than you require, which is costing you money each month. Alternatively, you may be paying for WiFi speeds that are lower than you expected. Our internet speed test can reveal whether your provider is actually meeting their advertised speeds. If you run our test multiple times and still don’t see the speeds you’re paying for, contact your ISP for more help.

How does your internet speed test work?

The Bandwidth Place Internet Speed Test is a browser-based, HTML5 speed test that checks your connection speed without requiring any downloads. When you begin the test, our tool will upload a set of files from your computer to the fastest test server with the lowest ping. If you would like to use a different server, we also provide the option to manually select the server location. The speed test will then run in reverse, downloading your files instead. During the entire process, our speed test will measure various metrics, such as your upload speed, download speed, and ping.

How to improve your internet speeds

Restart your router or modem

This is often the easiest place to start. Sometimes it’s as simple as a quick reset. Unplug your modem or wireless gateway, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on. If your wireless connection is still poor after restarting your modem, try repeating the process with your router. Finally, you might want to try turning off the WiFi on all of your connected devices. Wait a few seconds and then turn your WiFi back on. Wait for your devices to reconnect and see if your connection speeds have improved.

Check your hardware

Maybe your modem and/or router are obsolete? This sometimes hampers your speed. Check with your internet service provider to ensure your equipment is up to date. In most cases, they upgrade your setup for free, although a monthly charge may apply. You can also consider purchasing your own modem and router to keep your monthly cost to a minimum. Your ISP maintains a list of third-party equipment compatible with their service. Talk with them to find out what direction is best for you.

Move your router to a different location

Routers are affected by location. Consider placing your wireless router close to your prime television viewing area to improve the overall streaming experience. Additionally, try to keep any walls between your router and your streaming devices to a minimum. This helps you get the most out of your bandwidth even without spending extra on a high-end router. Certain appliances, most notably microwaves, interfere with your router’s signal. So make sure you place the router where a microwave won’t hamper your WiFi.

Consider a range extender

Depending on the layout of your home and the location of your wireless router, you may encounter difficulty keeping a strong internet signal. Range extenders offer a relatively inexpensive way to spread your wireless signal throughout your home. Expect to pay anywhere from $75 to $150 for a decent model. They typically plug directly into a wall socket, so you are able to place the unit closer to where you do your most internet activity.

Change your internet service provider

If all else fails and you’ve tried the tips above, there is always the option to switch your internet provider. Internet providers typically offer multiple different types of technologies used for internet access. Some are faster than others. Here is an overview of the most widely used internet types:
