i get to the main menu screen and it crashes back to the steam client.

was working fine until i tried to run it today. are there logs somewhere?

30 мар. 2015 в 0:49

Yup. The same happened to me. It ran fine about 10 hours ago. Now it crashes to the desktop every time I start it. Takes about 10 seconds or so. It doesn’t matter if you continue a game or sit looking at the main menu. Same result.

Player.log ends with a SIGSEGV 🙁
See http://pastebin.com/AwMRBvD7 for this log.

Same here. I can start loading a map if quick enough, but if it crashed before loading. I’ve tried both of the beta branches available on steam, and neither of those or the main version avoid the issue.

This is happening to me also. Was playing this afternoon for several hours, came back a while later, game crashes to desktop after a certain amount of time [either loading game or sitting at menu].

This actually happened to me last week also, after a while it just started working again. No idea what’s going on.

Wait a minute. that’s really odd that it just started happening to us all at the same time [plus my experience it being periodic. ]

Don’t suppose this has something to do with steamcloud? Or some other online service within the game?

Do any of you guys have a paradox account you sign in to?

30 мар. 2015 в 0:58

I’m signed in with a Paradox account in the game. I don’t have a forum account though (registration disabled).

Same here, the crashing suddenly started. I had not a single problem before with my hardware and the open source AMD drivers. No paradox account here. Didn’t check if it was some ping or anything like that tho.

30 мар. 2015 в 1:09

when the game runs, there is data being received from 183.91.51.125 and 183.91.55.125. can’t find much info on those IP’s though, they aren’t in any DNS record and don’t respond to ping [I’m not going to start port scanning them as it won’t give any useful info]

I don’t think it’s steam cloud sync, as that happens outside of the game with the steam client . I really want to know what this server is sending data to the game, seeing as it’s supposed to be offline. I’m going to block these IP’s to see if it fixes the crash.

Did Steam get an update? The reference to a library to be loaded in Player.log is

#13 0x00007ffca4e1016e in ?? () from ./libsteam_api.so

Can you check if you get the same? The file is located at ~/.config/unity3d/Colossal\ Order/Cities\:\ Skylines/Player.log

Having the same issue here.

Played for 5~6 hrs this morning, everything was fine. Just tried to start up again this afternoon, now the game crashes just after I get back into a city. And I’ve even tried rebooting!

Playing on an AMD X6 1055, 8GB RAM, Radeon 5850 GPU with Ububtu 14.04

Oh boy, just catch that exception already, Paradox! A small info like «Steam workshop» is currently offline, would be sufficient and I could play this awesome game again!

I upgraded from Ubuntu 22.04 to 22.10. This appears to have broken C:S. The game crashes when trying to start or continue a map. I do run mods.

I seem to remember having this problem once, and seeing a splash page with instructions to install some Linux packages with «mono» in their names. I think I have to do this again because of my OS upgrade, which was a clean reinstall of root (but I kept /home). I can’t seem to get that splash page to show again.

Where are the mono install instructions?

Heads-up for anyone who is following this discussion: that page had more instructions than I needed. I didn’t need to add certificates. All I needed to do was to reinstall mono-devel. After a LONG pause the first time I opened a city file (presumably to compile the .NET code), everything was running again.

Now, if anyone is still with me, I remember being PROMPTED to install mono-devel at some point by C:S. The game did not prompt me to reinstall mono-devel after I upgraded my OS. This suggests that the game config files contain a flag which is not checked again after mono-devel is first installed. If you upgrade Ubuntu cleanly, removing all packages, this can break.

But I can tell you that a rolling upgrade of Ubuntu where you don’t remove all packages can cause other unpleasant problems, such as your system refusing to shut down. I was having exactly that problem and that’s why I chose to try a clean upgrade.

Can C:S be programmed to take notice of the absence of mono-devel and prompt the user again?

Seattle, US download region. No firewall.

Is it potentially related to different times zones as well? The game will run at certain hours of the day for me, such as early afternoon, but it not in evening.

Thank you for your help and understanding!
We located the issue to a workshop item saving its preview image as JPEG and renaming it to PNG causing confusion on the game side as the preview image is expected to be a PNG. We are investigating how to fix this issue properly.
In the meanwhile, toggling Steam to offline mode will prevent the image to be fetched in the main menu and will allow you to play the game.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

toggling Steam to offline mode will prevent the image to be fetched in the main menu and will allow you to play the game.

Offline mode gives me the error «Failed to contact key server.» Perhaps the product key showing on start has to be disabled for it to work?

edit: Confirmed that it does have to be disabled, but the game usually crashes before it can be disabled.

Extract from an earlier post when Steam fixed the workshop offline mode:

«PS: Strangely, I had a problem when launching the game after the update and I would get: «Failed to Contact Key Server», it is unlikely to happen for everybody, but if it does for you, I just followed the steps from the Steam support (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2204-OPGC-4862) to get it sorted out.

Problem Occurs After Updating Steam
If this problem occurred directly after a Steam update and the firewall is already disabled, please try this process:
1. Log out and exit Steam
2. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Steam (the default location). If you have installed Steam to a different folder, please locate that folder now.
3. Rename the file «ClientRegistry.blob» to ClientRegistryOld.blob and then close the Steam folder
4. Launch Steam and login. Steam should update, re-create the file, and then you will be able to play»

Whoa, client treats PNG as PNG just by file extension? Or is this image was formed with wrong magic number? o_O

Why the heck would you put a name extension there anyway? xD

Then again, it’s Unity, recognizing files, right? What windows has to do here xD

31 мар. 2015 в 8:06

I can remember in my Windows period that Windows needed a extension, .JPG, .PNG or Doc, etc. If not you got an read error. I know, not on Linux.

As this is a multiplatform game, I suppose we get an extension.

uname -rs
Linux 3.16.0-33-generic

31 мар. 2015 в 8:10

I think the extension is just used for the application-files association (which application is used to open the file on which you double-clicked). It’s convenient since you just have to read the name of the file, you don’t have to open the file to look inside, but you can still «look inside» to be sure that it is really a jpg or a png.

edit: and obiously, you should

@damsku: I managed to find out why exactly my whole system crashes after a while in offline mode on Cities: Skylines v1.0.6.

Here is what journalctl returns after reboot

Mar 31 15:46:38 linux-ygih kernel: Watchdog[2911]: segfault at 0 ip 00007f3de0ba6596 sp 00007f3dd0dbc6a0 error 6 in chrome[7f3ddccb9000+5153000]

It is true that each time it crashed, Google Chrome was running as well. In Chrome, I have hardware acceleration enabled. I tested it without Google Chrome running and no problem whatsoever, except the asset stuff on Mac/Linux you are also working on.

There’s also no sign of tearing when Google Chrome is gone. Performance wise, it’s a huge difference as well. With the Dynamic Resolution @ 175% and Sun Shafts mod installed & activated, I measure 26 fps instead of 5 fps, with a normal to far zoom level. On street level or using the First Person mod, I get 17 fps in stead of 2 fps.

And all without crashing or freezing.

Would it be possible than any other process relying on graphics acceleration can take away resources needed by the game? If so, most of the Linux distro nowadays somehow rely on 3D acceleration for the fancy effects used by their window managers.
