ClamAV upgrade?

I work with Mint 13 Cinnamon. I have installed «ClamAV 0.98.1» via «Synaptic-Package Manager», this was the only version that was available. ClamTK tells me that me version is outdated. The new version is 0.98.4 but I’m a noob and I have no idea how to install it, I’m not confident enough to use the how-to’s to upgrade ClamAV, I’ve downloadad «clamav-0.98.4.tar.gz» but I have no idea what to do with it.

At the same time ClamTK tells me that the «AntiVirus definition» is up to date.

My questions are:
1) Is it necessary to upgrade? Or is my old version still okay if ClamTK says that the «antivirus definitions» are up to date?
2) If there will be an easy upgrade available, will it appear in the «synaptic package-manager»? Or will I still have to do everything manually with inserting code into the terminal etc?

3) And one last somewhat unrelated question. If I have some important business to attend to and I boot from a LiveCD (let’s say Mint17 or Precise Puppy) would it be safe even if my Mint13 is infected?

not really the changes are minor, if a real issue would be there you would get an updated engine from the ubuntu repo

As soon as the newer engine has been tested and packaged for Ubuntu/Mint it will be available through your normal MintUpdate.

I just saw this post. I have Mint 17 XFCE 14.04.1 currently with Clamav 0.98.1 and ClamTK 5.09. As of this post there has been no change to the Software Update Center for Mint regarding any update/upgrade for Clam AV. Clamav 0.98.4 was released on or about 16th of Jun 14′. So, how long is this going to take before version 0.98.4 will be made available?

I also have Xubuntu 14.04.1 XFCE and version 0.98.4 is already available in the Ubuntu Software Center. And, I have already upgraded Clamav.

Again PatH57, please check your sources before advising anything.
The clamav PPA is only valid for Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx!!

@ Ineedhelpplease:
Do not add this PPA to your Mint 17 setup since the PPA is not meant for Mint 17!! If you do so, you will recieve error message while updating your repository. Mint 17 is based on Ubuntu 14.04 while Ubuntu 10.04 is the package-base for Linux Mint 9 which is absolete since April 2013. The ex-planation of how to add the PPA link in that page of askubuntu.com is therefor not valid for Mint 17!

The only command you could try, which is meantioned in on the page of askubuntu, is the following terminal command:

I would also recommend you, and others as well, to go to the application website first before jumping to any help sites which might contain outdated or not applicable information. The application website for ClamAV is: http://www.clamav.net/. There you can also find out how to update your ClamAV version. Info can be found here: http://www.clamav.net/documentation.html.

Some answers to your questions:

First of all, why do you think you need anti-virus on a Linux system? Normally (no offence) this is a «standard» reaction/question of Windows refugee who thinks they must have anti-virus protection of their Linux system. I’ve made some checklist when such tool is required: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p . 40#p884536.

I’m not saying that there isn’t any Linux viruses to be found «in the wild», the change of getting infected by a Linux virus is rather small. in fact, you can neglect this change. In other words, the change of getting hit by a meteorite is much higher.

ClamAV makes part of the standard repository. Normally, any package available in the standard repository which has to be updated, will get these updates through the Update Manager. Since i’m not using ClamAV at all i’m not sure if ClamAV gets its updates through the Update Manager. But try that terminal command first and see what happens.

Infected with what?? Again, (and no offence) this is a standard reaction of a Windows refugee (which i hope you’re not ). 99.9% of all malicious software is written for Windows. Since the architecture of Linux differs from Wndows, any malicious software meant for Windows cannot infect Linux! So, again my question: what kind of infection do you expect to get.

And no, a LiveCD cannot be infected or overwritten by anything when you burned the iso on a dvd.

How to Install ClamAV on Linux Mint 21

Clamav is a command-line tool that scans files and directories for viruses, Trojan horses, and other malicious software. Installing ClamAV GUI on Linux Mint 21
