How to Activate the Dark and Light Wallpaper Variants in GNOME 42

One of the main features in GNOME 42 is the availability of a dual tone wallpapers for dark and light mode.

GNOME 42 features dark and light variants of wallpapers

Basically, with this feature, if you select the light mode, the light version of the wallpaper is selected. When you switch to dark mode in GNOME, wallpaper changes to the dark version.

Here’s a sample of such a wallpaper. You can move the slider to compare.

gnome light desktop

This dual themed wallpaper is available under the Background section in the Settings -> Appearance.

However, it may not be present in some cases and you may see an empty Background section like this:

no dark light wallpaper in gnome

This is what my teammate Sreenath noticed when he updated his Endeavour OS system and got the new GNOME 42 desktop.

This won’t work in Ubuntu 22.04 which has a customized GNOME 42 version.

Enable dark and light themed wallapers in GNOME 42

If you are also facing the same situation with GNOME 42, there is a quick and easy solution. Use your distribution’s package manager and install gnome-backgrounds package. That’s it.

First, please check the desktop environment details and ensure that you are running GNOME 42. You can find it in the About section of system settings.

Once you have made sure that your system has GNOME 42, go on with the rest of the steps.

sudo pacman -S gnome-backgrounds

Wait for the command to finish.

add dark light wallpapers gnome

No need to restart or even log out. The changes will take place immediately.

Just go to the Appearance in the Settings and look under the Background section. You should see various wallpapers with dual modes.

Select a pair and it sets the image based on your system theme.

dark light wallpapers gnome

That’s cool. But you only get a handful of dual themed wallpapers made available by the GNOME or your distro’s developers. What if you want to have your own set of dark and light mode wallpapers? Well, you can achieve that with a little tweaking and patience.

Making your own dual themed wallpapers (for advanced users)

I presume that you know your things while trying these steps to add additional wallpapers in dark and light mode variants.

  • Download two images
  • Rename it as (say) image-l.jpg for light and image-d.jpg for dark
  • Create a folder called gnome-background-properties in /usr/share for systemwide or .local/share for single user
  • Copy the code of GNOME from its GitLab repo to a text editor and change the location of respective light and dark image files inside tag
  • Save it in the gnome-background-properties folder you created earlier
  • Backgrounds can be changed now from system settings

Dark and light linux

Since Wild Card Studios chose to add Linux support for Ark, does anyone believe they will do the same with this game? Apparently this game uses the same stuff as Ark does since the company which produced this also bought out Wildcard.

We are a small french speaking gaming community (Artemis : https://artemis.community) using a Linux server at OVH, mainly playing on our own ARK cluster (2 servers inside). As we couldn’t wait for a linux release for DnL, I worked on the possibility to run a DnL dedicated server on our linux server.
I just succeded in installing and making run a DnL dedicated server on our Linux box, using different softwares like «wine» and «xvfb» and scripts of my own. It was not so easy to make it work, I have to admit it. Even «Conan Exile» was much more easier (although it is using wine too).

If anyone is interested in running a DnL server on Linux, juste let me know and I’ll share all my work with anyone who’s interested.
I could even write down a short step-by-step guide about this (including the bash scripts) — but I won’t spend time writing it if no one is interested. So just let me know !

I’m interested, tried to install it through wine, but it won’t show up in the server list. It does start up fine though.

We’re working hard to get Dark and Light ready for its Early Access debut. This thread will serve as a centralized location for the most pressing questions that we’ve collected from the community. If you have any questions that aren’t covered in the FAQ, feel free to leave a comment. I’ll keeping an eye on discussion here and on other channels and updating the FAQ accordingly.

When will Dark and Light be released and how much will it cost?
We don’t have a solid date set just yet. Dark and Light was initially planned to launch in Early Access in late 2016, but we decided to extend pre-EA development to continue polishing the game. We’ll be announcing a solid release frame and the discounted Early Access price in the near future.

Will Dark and Light feature Mac and Linux support at Early Access launch?
We aren’t 100% on this just yet — PC is our primary platform for the Early Access launch, but we may be interested in looking into supporting Mac and Linux once we get PC totally sorted out.

What kind of game is Dark and Light?
Dark and Light is an online sandbox survival RPG with heavy fantasy themes. Players will have the freedom to explore a massive world, master a wide variety of magic spells, tame wild creatures, and build their own settlements from the ground up.

Isn’t this an MMO?
No. While Dark and Light’s world is persistent, not session-based, and contains some gameplay elements, themes, and mechanics similar to those seen in MMORPGs, it is not an MMORPG in the traditional sense. You’ll still be building up a character and upgrading attributes and skill trees in a persistent world, but due to the smaller server sizes and other nuances, we don’t consider it to be an MMORPG.

How does movement and combat work?
Dark and Light uses third-person action-style movement and combat controls. Both mouse + keyboard and gamepad controls will be supported during the Early Access launch.

What classes can I choose from when I make a character?
There actually aren’t any set classes in Dark and Light. There are two kinds of experience, character experience, which determines character level, and skill node experience. As your character level increases, you can assign points to various attributes (max HP, stamina, mana pool, etc.). Skill node experience is earned by completing actions related to a particular node, such as crafting items, creating spells, killing creatures, and more. Depending on how you play, you’ll naturally level up your most-used skills, but you can eventually max out every skill, even though doing so would require a pretty sizeable time investment.

Will we be able to form guilds in DnL?
Yep! They’re called Houses and they’re pretty standard fare as far as guilds go. Any player can form a House with any number of other players. You’ll have access to a House chat, special structures and items, shared privileges on storage units and tamed creatures, and more.

Are private servers available?
They are! You’ll have the option to play single-player or join / host a private server with custom rulesets.

What’s the maximum server capacity?
Because we haven’t held any stress tests yet, we haven’t been able to determine an exact number. We’ll be aiming for 100 players on official servers, but we’ll be using the Early Access launch period to determine ideal server capacity and scale from there.

What are the recommended specs for running Dark and Light?
For the best experience, you’ll want something comparable to this build, but less powerful builds (i5 + 960GTX + 8GB RAM for example), will be able to run the game just fine on low to medium settings:
OS: 64-Bit Windows 7 Service Pack 1/ Windows 10
Processor: Intel Core i7-5820K 6x 3.3 GHz
Memory: 16GB DDR4 2133MHz (2x 8GB)
Video Card: GeForce GTX 1070 or higher
Hard Drive: At least 50 GB of free space
DirectX: DirectX 10
