darktable 2.6

when are you going to upgrade to 2.6? what I mean by this is when are you going to put it in the update manager?

That’s extremely unlikely to happen. Software in the repositories of a release generally only gets security updates during the lifetime of a release. From one release of Linux Mint to a next you generally get functionality updates (new version) of all Linux Mint maintained software, but Darktable isn’t Linux Mint maintained. To get functionality updates for not-Linux Mint maintained software you have to upgrade to a next major release of Linux Mint (e.g., 19) as that moves you to a new package base and that will have functionality updates for all other software.

Besides that, since you’re on Linux Mint 18.3, you can just install the Darktable flatpak through Software Manager instead of the regular one. The Darktable flatpak available in Software Manager generally has the latest version. Currently it is on 2.6. Updates to flatpaks are installed automatically in the background.

xenopeek mentioned the flatpak, and snap package is also available, see https://snapcraft.io/darktable. The snap is still at 2.4.4, but I expect it to be updated soon.

I have used both the flatpak and the snap, and I cannot recommend either. For me the best option is to add the PPA. I have used the PPA since I started with darktable; it has not given me any problems, and I find the installed version give me less problems than the flatpak or snap.

To add the PPA, open a terminal and enter the following commands.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pmjdebruijn/darktable-release

The release version of darktable should appear in Software/Package Manager.

Currently the PPA supports v2.4.4 — which is normal, seeing as 2.6 was released 4 days ago. There is an expected one or two week delay before the PPA supports a new version.

I installed PPA, but the only opetions that show up in Software Manager are 2.4.2-1, which I already have installed, or the flathub version of 2.6.2. Brand new to Linux Mint & Ubuntu, so unfamiliar with the whole Ubuntu way of manageing software. I’ve used Fedora & derivatives for many years.

After adding the PPA and before launching Software Manager, had you done a sudo apt-get update in order to refresh the locally cached list of available software packages?

Which version of Linux Mint are you running? If it is 18.x, the PPA will not install or upgrade past 2.4.4. You have three options if you are running LM 18.x and you want to use the current version of darktable: Upgrade to the 19.x series of Linux Mint 19.x, use the flatpak, or use the Snap package. I am not a fan of the darktable flatpak — I find it to be sluggish and prone to crashing, but it does work. I do not recommend the Snap package.

If you are running LM 19.x, open a terminal and enter

Darktable

Darktable — программа для обработки и каталогизации изображений. Одно из назначений программы это обработка RAW файлов, поэтому Darktable часто называют RAW конвертером. Darktable также можно применять для каталогизации изображений, то есть использовать как менеджер фотографий.

Darktable имеет три основных режима работы.

В режиме Световой стол (lighttable mode) отображается коллекция фотографий (миниатюры).

В режиме Обработка (darkroom mode) выполняется обработка изображения.

Режим Камера предназначен для импорта фотографий с подключенного фотоаппарата.

Darktable поддерживает расширенный поиск по коллекции ваших файлов. Вы также можете ставить оценки вашим фотографиям и добавлять теги.

Программа имеет модульную архитектуру. Это значит, что можно подключать дополнительные модули, которые позволят расширить функционал программы до неограниченных пределов. Все, конечно, зависит от количества и качества самих модулей.

Darktable имеет множество возможностей по обработке изображений, начиная от самых простых действий, до сложных эффектов.

Интерфейс

Интерфейс программы выполнен в темных тонах и смотрится довольно стильно и несколько необычно.

В центре расположена рабочая зона, где отображается либо обрабатываемое изображение, либо миниатюры.

Слева и справа расположены функциональные панели, которые выполнены в виде сворачивающихся вкладок (областей).

В целом интерфейс показался мне удобным, но для комфортной работы нужен большой широкоформатный монитор.

Установка

Установка Darktable в Ubuntu Linux

Чтобы установить свежую версию программы Darktable в Ubuntu Linux выполните в терминале следующие команды:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pmjdebruijn/darktable-release sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install darktable
