rescue my hdd with ddrescue gui

just wanted to ask if i did something wrong with the settings or if my old beloved hard drive is just fuc*ed up.

I have an SSD with Mint and a HDD datagrave (which i did not backed up lately )
Lately while booting i get a lot of «Buffer I/O erroer on dev sda1». But after a while Mint starts as normal — but the hdd cant be mounted.
So i tried rescuing it with ddrescue gui.

after hours and hours now it says current rate 0 and time left n/a — bit it also says it has recovered 400gb from the original 850.
i mounted the created image with the gui BUT..
unfortunately the folder is completely empty. what can i do next?

If it’s a really old drive, it has probably just passed away — I’m sorry for your loss. Personally, I’d try testdisk(8) on it, but the more you scan (use) that drive, the more likely you are to further degrade it. In the past, I was working with a really old drive, and it actually completely died as I was trying to recover data from it.

When you have a drive you suspect is dying, you could clone it with something like dd(1) — or a GUI version of it, if you prefer — then work with the cloned image, rather than risking further wear to the drive itself; this is especially problematic with old HDDs, I imagine.

Unfortunately, even that isn’t ideal, because you might waste valuable time recovering data you don’t care about, but missing the important data which you killed the drive waiting to rescue. CloneZilla might be a good choice, because it doesn’t actually copy each and every bit of free space, which results in a lower image size, a quicker clone, and it’s presumably less stressful for the drive.

When you get a read error on a track, the software can report the error or just sit there retrying endlessly. The retries make the wear and errors worse. Good recovery software would skip the error and recover all the tracks that have no read errors. One of the reasons I use Linux to recover Windows disks is the horrible problem of Windows beating to death an old disk without any reports of errors.

Errors tend to spread. Continuous reads of the same spot can break out more material that spreads to other locations. An alignment error will get worse. All good reasons for one fast pass to recover what ever is usable.

When the recovery software collects a million sectors of good data, it could be missing the blocks that identify files. The data from the files may be there but not identifiable as a file.

The first sector of a file can be missing and make the whole file useless because software cannot decode most binary data unless the start is intact. It is really only text files that you can read. All those LibreOffice documents are compressed which means they can be decompressed only up to the first missing block.

Clonezilla, as suggested, is one option. If you have more than one partition on the disk, create a separate backup for each partition as some partitions may be more complete.

Occasionally you can read a bad disk after letting it cool overnight or on another machine where the power supply might have better voltages. Mostly it is like driving on a flat tyre. The tyre will never work again, you might destroy the rim in the process, and you will not be able to travel far, but at least you feel like you are doing something.

my settings with ddrescue where «softrun», so error-sektors arnt read. i let die disk cool down over night and startet a new try the next morning. but ddrescue wasnt able to read any sector. the error-rate was at maybe 130 mb/s. I will do one last try with clonezilla in the next few days.

but i think i have to put my datagrave to rest including some valuable memorys . thats so sad and dumb at the same time.

DDRescue-GUI, a frontend for the Ddrescue rescue tool

Ddrescue is a rescue tool that is part of GNU utilities pack for a long time, and although its capacity is beyond doubt — since it has been used by a large number of distros over several years. But like all those that are used since the GNU / Linux command line, there are those who affirm that it offers a somewhat high learning curve and if it were shorter, more could be obtained from it.

Well, for those who think like this, we have Ddrescue-GUI, a frontend for Ddrescue written in Python 2 and that offers a very clean and easy-to-use interface, thus ensuring that the excellent GNU it can be used by a much larger number of users to retrieve information from their hard drives, USB sticks, CDs, DVDs, and more.

As we see in the upper image of this post, we simply have to indicate the source drive (in this case / dev / sda), the location of a log file (if we want it) and a destination location, and then to click on ‘Start’ we are ready to start recover information contained in bad sectors, etc. Of course, we must bear in mind that the duration of the procedure may vary according to different factors such as the size of our disk or the speed of our equipment.

We can download DDRescue-GUI from its website, which we share below, or by adding the PPA if we use Ubuntu, Linux Mint or derivatives:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa: hamishmb / myppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ddrescue-gui

Что ж, для тех, кто так думает, у нас есть Ddrescue-GUI, интерфейс для Ddrescue написан на Python 2 и предлагает очень чистый и простой в использовании интерфейс, что гарантирует отличную GNU его может использовать гораздо большее количество пользователей для получения информации со своих жестких дисков, USB-накопителей, компакт-дисков, DVD-дисков и т. д.

This repository holds DDRescue-GUI, which is available under the GNU GPLv3+.

NOTE: Source code for GNU ddrescue is available via https://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/

A simple GUI frontend to make GNU ddrescue easier to use.

NOTE: To generate documentation, the directory containing the files in this repo must be called «ddrescue_gui».

As of v2.1.0, these no longer have to be run as the superuser.

The process for running these is the same on both Linux and macOS. It can be done on both Python 2 and Python 3.

Without Coverage Reporting

Make sure you have installed Coverage.py using pip or your package manager.

«sudo python3 -m coverage run —rcfile=./.coveragerc ./tests.py»

«sudo python2 -m coverage run —rcfile=./.coveragerc ./tests.py»

To run the tests. Then run:

«sudo python3 -m coverage html»

«sudo python2 -m coverage html»
