No WiFi — Dell Vostro 1000
Post by kludge » Sun Sep 18, 2011 1:58 am
I have been using Linux Mint 9 for about a year with no problems, but I’m still a n00b so bear with me, and don’t assume that I will understand what’s going on with all of these terminal commands.
Last week my computer crashed (would not boot) so I reinstalled Linux Mint 9. No WiFi. WiFi was working perfectly at the time of the crash.
My Dell Vostro 1000 has no hard switch, it uses Fn+F2 to turn WiFi on and off, but that combination does nothing.
Oh, well. I saw that Linux Mint 11 is available so I installed that. After booting the first time — No WiFi. But I noticed an icon and when I clicked on it, it installed the Broadcom driver. Still no WiFi.
If I go to Menu>>Administration>>Additional Driver I can see the driver there for my BCM4311 and that it’s activated and in use. I’ve also tried removing it and activating it again, and rebooting. Nothing.
When I click the network connections icon at the lower right is shows «Wired Network» but not «Wireless Networks».
I’ve searching forums for a few days and so far nothing I have found has worked. Here’s what I have:
I opened the file NetworkManager.state and it looks like this:
I have tried «rfkill unblock all» and «sudo rfkill unblock all» and nothing. What’s more I do «rfkill list all» and I get this:
~ $ sudo modprobe wl

I think you need the sta driver for a 4311
I think I can see wl and b43 drivers
to see if this can clarify things?
have a read at the above post too;
Issue: _eth%d: 5.100.82.38 driver failed with code 21_ and wireless doesn’t work. You need to install Maverick’s driver from http://packages.ubuntu.com
BCM4311, BCM4312, BCM4313, BCM4321, BCM4322, BCM43224, BCM43225, **BCM43227, **BCM43228

Broadcom STA wireless driver
This package contains Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver for use with Broadcom’s BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4313-, BCM4321-,BCM4322-, BCM43224-, and BCM43225-, BCM43227- and BCM43228-basedhardware.

08:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX [14e4:170c] (rev 02)
I have been to the https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiD . er/bcm43xx web page before, but I’m going to look into the Maverick driver.

as in the broadcom post above
Instead of a computer restart, in a terminal issue the following commands:
~$ sudo modprobe -r b43 ssb wl
Note: Allow several seconds for the network manager to scan for available networks before attempting a connection.

After a few more seconds the ethernet connection reestablished itself.
So I did it again with the ethernet cable unplugged. I got the same message in terminal as above. After a few seconds I got a window that had the wireless icon in it with an «x» on the icon with the message:
Enable Wifi in Dell Vostro 14 3000 Series with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
Ubuntu 14.04LTS is the latest LTS release available. I had Ubuntu 12.04LTS installed in my Dell Vostro. There is no option available for immediate upgrade to ubuntu 14.04LTS from 12.04LTS. Hence I decided to format and install fresh.
There has always been considerable improvement in every new release of Ubuntu, but network connectivity has always been an obstacle while using Ubuntu releases.
Below are the steps to enable the WIFI drivers.
1. Check if valid WIFI adapter is available:
$ sudo lshw -C network *-network description: Wireless interface product: BCM43142 802.11b/g/n vendor: Broadcom Corporation physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:06:00.0 logical name: wlan0 version: 01 serial: 9c:d2:1e:e5:47:3f width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list ethernet physical wireless configuration: broadcast=yes driver=wl0 driverversion=6.30.223.141 (r415941) latency=0 multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11abg resources: irq:18 memory:f7900000-f7907fff *-network description: Ethernet interface product: RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller vendor: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:07:00.0 logical name: eth0 version: 0c serial: b8:2a:72:ac:31:fa size: 100Mbit/s capacity: 1Gbit/s width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress msix vpd bus_master cap_list ethernet physical tp mii 10bt 10bt-fd 100bt 100bt-fd 1000bt 1000bt-fd autonegotiation configuration: autonegotiation=on broadcast=yes driver=r8169 driverversion=2.3LK-NAPI duplex=full firmware=rtl8168g-2_0.0.1 02/06/13 ip=192.168.1.4 latency=0 link=yes multicast=yes port=MII speed=100Mbit/s resources: irq:58 ioport:e000(size=256) memory:f7800000-f7800fff memory:f2100000-f2103fff
2. Check if WIFI is enabled:
$wpconfig wlan0 IEEE 802.11abg ESSID:off/any Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off vboxnet0 no wireless extensions. lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions.
Identify your Brodcom chipset family:
$ lspci -vvnn | grep 14e4 output: 06:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM43142 802.11b/g/n [14e4:4365] (rev 01)
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
Now reboot the system to see your WIFI enabled.
For it to be effective without reboot run the below commands:
sudo modprobe -r b43 ssb wl sudo modprobe wl

[SOLVED] Doesn’t recognize Wifi on Dell Vostro 1000
Post by turvarya » Fri Mar 01, 2013 8:20 am
I am currently trying to install linux mint 14 on my gf’s Laptop and the WiFi is giving me some hard time.
It works fine in Wndows Vista, at startup you have to activate it, by pressing FN+F2(no hard switch).
As far as I can tell, Mint seem to just don’t know, that there is a WiFi-card, FN+F2 doesn’t work. I looked around in the Internet, but I am getting realy frustrated about that.

I also tried Windows Wireless Drivers, but even it seems to have installed the Driver, it doesn’t change anything.
