How to Turn On or Off Bluetooth in Ubuntu Linux

This post shows students and new users steps to enable or disable Bluetooth on Ubuntu Linux to connect or disconnect from nearby devices.

Bluetooth is a wireless technology that allows your computers, smartphones, and mobile devices to connect to other Bluetooth-enabled devices nearby.

With Bluetooth enabled in Ubuntu Linux, you can stream music, connect to devices like speakers, headphones, keyboards, mouse, send data, and communicate with nearby devices wirelessly with ease.

There are multiple ways to turn On or Off Bluetooth on your computer. Some computers come with a dedicated Bluetooth button that sits on top of the keyboard area, and/or on either side of the computer.

The physical Bluetooth switch on your computer allows you to quickly turn off or turn on your Bluetooth device. There’s also another way to turn off Bluetooth on Ubuntu Linux, and we’ll also show you how to do that.

Disabling and enabling Bluetooth in Ubuntu Linux is something that hasn’t changed much. Similar to previous editions of Ubuntu, the process is still the same.

To get started with disabling and enabling Bluetooth on Ubuntu Linux, follow the steps below:

How to turn off or on Bluetooth on Laptop

As we mentioned above, there are multiple ways to turn on or turn off Bluetooth on Ubuntu Linux. One way is using your computer’s Bluetooth button.

If your laptop is equipped with a physical Bluetooth button, you can quickly turn it on or off the Bluetooth device simply by toggling the button to the On or Off position or tapping it to disable or enable it.

How to turn on or off Bluetooth on Ubuntu

If your computer does not have a physical Bluetooth switch or button, then you can turn off or on Bluetooth from within Ubuntu Linux.

The Bluetooth icon appears in the top system menu when one or more Bluetooth devices are connected. You can see icons for volume, network, Bluetooth, and a few others. The top panel should look similar to the one below:

If you don’t see the Bluetooth signal icon on the top system menu, simply click the System Menu area to show the menu options. On the menu options, select Turn Off Bluetooth if it’s already On, or Turn On if it’s Off.

You can also bring up the Bluetooth panel from the system menu option. Click Bluetooth Settings to open the panel.

To connect to a Bluetooth device, use the panel. Then when a list of nearby Bluetooth devices shows up, select the one you want to pair with.

Confirm the Bluetooth connection PIN to pair with other devices.

How to disable or enable Bluetooth on Ubuntu Linux

In some situations, you may want to completely disable Bluetooth in Windows, and not just disconnect. You can do that via the Bluetooth settings panel.

To disable Bluetooth on Ubuntu Linux from the desktop, click on the click the “Show Applications” button from the bottom left or press the Super key (WIN) on your keyboard.

On the Activities overview dashboard, start typing Bluetooth in the search box. Select the Bluetooth app to open the panel. From there you can quickly disable and enable Bluetooth by toggling the button to the On or Off position.

That will turn Off or On the Bluetooth on Ubuntu Linux. You can now exit the settings panel and you’re done.

Как отключить Bluetooth без возможности подключения

В этой заметке показано, как удалить блютус полностью, а также исключить любую возможность его подключить.

Начните с деактивации и удаления службы bluetooth.

Удалите из автозагрузки и остановите службу bluetooth:

sudo systemctl disable bluetooth sudo systemctl stop bluetooth

Удалите пакет bluez.

В Arch Linux и производных:

Модуль ядра bluetooth включён в ядро, поэтому удаление пакетов вроде bluez и blueman задачу отключения Bluetooth может решить не в полной мере — если удалить указанные пакеты у нас не будет инструментов и графических апплетов для наблюдением за Bluetooth, но это не означает, что на уровне ядра не будет выполнятся подключение Bluetooth устройств (например, USB адаптера Bluetooth), либо периферийные устройства не будут сопрягаться.

Для отключения Bluetooth воспользуемся отключением модуля ядра, который описан в разделе «Запрет на включение модулей (чёрный список модулей)».

Как можно убедиться, апплет blueman, а следовательно и Bluetooth работают.

Для отключения модуля bluetooth создайте файл /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

и копируйте в него следующее:

blacklist bluetooth install bluetooth /bin/true

Чтобы изменения вступили в силу, перезагрузите компьютер.

Как можно убедиться, Bluetooth больше не работает:

Для временной выгрузки (выключения) модуля выполните команду:

sudo modprobe -r bluetooth

Вы можете столкнуться с ошибкой:

modprobe: FATAL: Module bluetooth is in use.

Если предыдущая команда завершилась неудачей, то попробуйте следующую альтернативу:

rmmod: ERROR: Module bluetooth is in use by: btrtl btintel btbcm bnep btusb rfcomm

Как можно увидеть, программа опять завершилась неудачей, но зато вывела список модулей, которые используют модуль ядра bluetooth и, следовательно, из-за которых невозможно отключить bluetooth.

Попробуем выгрузить все эти модули:

sudo rmmod bluetooth btrtl btintel btbcm bnep btusb rfcomm

В моём случае выполнение команды несколько раз подряд выгрузило практически все модули и Bluetooth был отключён.

Отключённый таким образом Bluetooth будет вновь работать после перезагрузки.

Включение и выключение Bluetooth

Вы можете включить Bluetooth для подключения к другим Bluetooth-устройствам или отключить его для экономии энергии. Чтобы включить Bluetooth:

1. Откройте Обзор и начните вводить: Bluetooth .

Выключаем Bluetooth при старте системы Linux

Данная статья будет полезна для тех, кто использует Linux на ноутбуках, так как отключения Bluetooth снизит расход заряда аккумулятора. Да и в целом, если вы не пользуетесь Bluetooth, то зачем его держать включенным в вашей системе. Помимо того, что он будет разряжать аккумулятор, он так же будет висеть в памяти и потреблять ресурсы вашего ноутбука. В том случае, если вам к примеру нужно передать файлы на телефон, можно использовать и другие инструменты. В KDE это “KDE Connect”, для Gnome 3 имеется расширения “GSConnect”, и эти инструменты намного функциональней чем Blutooth. Да и при необходимости всегда можно временно включить Bluetooth, сделать необходимые дела, а затем выключить, не думаю что все мы часто им пользуемся.

Отключаем Bluetooth

И так, переходим к отключению Bluetooth, на самом деле, отключить его можно несколькими способами. Первый способ использовать графические утилиты, а вернее через настройки системы. Но, мы пойдем иным способом, который не будет зависеть от окружения вашего рабочего стола. Для отключения Блютуз мы воспользуемся терминалом, переходим в него и выведем список в котором нам необходимо найти тот самый Блютуз:

Теперь вводим команду “systemctl disable”, а затем названия необходимо процесса, в нашем случае это “bluetooth.service”. Замечу, что данной командой мы сможем отключить и остальные процессы, но, не советую в слепую использовать данную команду. Так как это может привести к не рабочей системе, и так, возвращаемся к отключению Блютуз. Что бы выйти из списка процессов достаточно нажать на букву “q”, а затем вводим команду на выключения от Root пользователя:

sudo systemctl disable bluetooth.service

Таким вот простым образом мы отключили Блютуз, тем самым высвободив ресурсы вашего ноутбука, что позволит сэкономить на заряде аккумулятора, а так же освободит оперативную память при использовании операционной системы Linux.

Заключение

Предположим, что вам по каким то причинам не подходят инструменты “KDE Connect” или “GSConnect” и вам необходим Блютуз, включить его можно введя команду “systemctl enable” и указав названия процесса, в нашем же случае это “bluetooth.service”:

sudo systemctl enable bluetooth.service

В любом же случае, отключать Bluetooth или нет, решать вам, и в том случае, если вы им не пользуетесь, рекомендую выключить его. Хотя бы по тому, что это освободит ресурсы вашего ноутбука для других задач.

Пользовался внешним блютузом, когда собрал свой первый комп в 2000-х. И то пользовался наверное пару раз. Внешнее USB-устройство даже где-то сейчас валяется. Затем за много лет использования ПК и ноутов никогда не пользовался блютуз. И не слышал, чтобы знакомые применяли. Зачем его включают автоматом везде, где надо и не надо. А USB-мыши по своему каналу со своим адаптером работают.

How to disable Bluetooth (and enable it) on your Linux PC

I f you don’t use Bluetooth on your laptop and are looking for a way to disable it permanently so that you get more juice out of your battery, here is a short guide just for you.

Bluetooth consumes very little power when it is not actively connected to any device. But when your laptop is running on battery, every ounce of charge left on your battery is precious.

On most Linux PCs, you can simply turn off Bluetooth by clicking on the Bluetooth icon that can be generally found on a panel and is usually close to other settings such as Wifi or sound.

But whenever you restart your system, Bluetooth is again turned back on. If you are like me and don’t remember to turn it off each time you reboot your system, you might be oblivious to the unwanted drain on your laptop battery, no matter how small it is.

How to Disable Bluetooth from Command-Line

Don’t get disheartened with the idea of reminding yourself to turn off Bluetooth every single time you reboot your Linux PC. Because, like always, Linux has a solution for every problem in the computing universe. Here comes systemctl, the inspection and managing tool for systemd – the init system and services manager in Linux – to the rescue!

2. Now run the following command in the Terminal. Enter your root password when prompted for it.

sudo systemctl disable bluetooth

This will disable Bluetooth after a restart, but it will not stop the currently running Bluetooth process.

3. Check if the command systemct was successful in disabling Bluetooth.

systemctl is-enabled bluetooth

4. In case you want to stop the Bluetooth process instantly instead of waiting for the next restart, use this command.

Run the same systemctl tool to bring the Bluetooth on your system back to life.

sudo systemctl enable bluetooth

Conclusion

As you may have already guessed, the systemctl command can be used to enable/disable and start/stop not only Bluetooth but also any service on your Linux computer.

Most Linux distros use the systemd init system, thereby supporting the systemctl command, as discussed in this post. The command works on most popular Linux distros such as Arch Linux, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Linux Mint, Manjaro Linux, OpenSUSE, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Solus, and Ubuntu.
