Having trouble connecting your DJI Spark to Android? Here’s how to fix it
DJI’s latest drone, the Spark, got some serious attention when it was announced last month and today I finally got my hands on one. The adorably tiny drone is advertised as something for beginners that doesn’t require much in terms of setup. Currently, though, there are some issues with the Spark’s WiFi connection. If you’re experiencing issues, here’s how to fix it.
Update: DJI reached out to us to confirm that the behavior listed below is the drone working as intended. The “Fly More Combo” is designed to pair the Spark to the remote control out of the box and the drone’s wireless network will not appear on your smartphone for this reason.
Resetting the drone’s WiFi network (with the instructions below) does allow it to be paired directly to a phone. The article that follows has been updated to reflect this.
Some users have reported problems with the Spark’s WiFi network not appearing on their smartphone during setup. During the standard setup process, the drone is expected to appear in the DJI Go 4 app and your phone’s WiFi network, but with the “Fly More Combo” of the drone, that doesn’t behave in quite the same way.
How to set up the DJI Spark with Android
The first thing you’ll need to do is connect to and activate your new drone. To do that, simply follow the steps below.
- Charge your DJI Spark battery fully and insert into drone.
- Download the DJI Go 4 app from the Google Play Store.
- Open DJI Go 4 and ensure the app is set to connect to a DJI Spark.
- Turn on your DJI Spark (one tap and one long press until fans kick in).
- In the DJI Go 4 app on your device, tap Enter Device and connect to the Spark’s WiFi network.*
- Enter the password found under the battery on your Spark and on the carrying case.
- Turn off mobile data.
- After you’ve connected to the Spark, you will be asked to activate the product and check for firmware updates.
- Once these steps have been completed, you should now be able to fly your DJI Spark.
If your experience ends up anything like mine, you’ll be presented with one major issue first — you can’t find the Spark’s WiFi network. The Spark that ships in the “Fly More Combo” is actually designed to pair to the remote controller first rather than directly to your phone. Thankfully, it’s not very difficult to change that and control things with your Android device.
How to reset DJI Spark WiFi
- Turn on your DJI Spark (one tap and one long press until the fans kick in).
- Open the DJI Go 4 app on your Android device and tap Enter Device. From there you should be presented with your device’s WiFi menu.
- Press and hold the Spark’s power button until the drone beeps once, two times (about 6 seconds). This resets the Spark’s WiFi network.
- On your smartphone, the Spark’s WiFi network should appear as a secured network
- From here, locate your Spark’s carrying case. The WiFi password will be listed next to the QR code. Input that password and tap Connect.
Once you’ve followed these steps, your device should have no issues connecting to the DJI Spark from your smartphone. When in use I’ve had no major issues with the app just yet, but the range is definitely minimal with my Pixel XL.

Nope. The Spark is a loyal marriage partner that won’t stray. You can pair it with the remote (9 second Spark button hold), or you can pair it with the phone (3 second button hold). You can not set it to pair with both. If it is paired with the phone, the Spark hides its SSID. That keeps it from being linked to two devices trying to control it.
When the Spark is operated by the remote control, the phone is linked to the remote’s wifi SSID, not the Spark’s. The phone then just operates as a free display screen for the remote.
Thanks for the feedback Gunship9. So I guess it’s safe for me to assume that if my Spark has successfully linked to my remote, I should be able to connect my phone to the REMOTE’s WiFi.
If so, I suspect my remote simply isn’t broadcasting a WiFi signal.

You will see the little red LED on the controller turn green when it links to the Spark.

1 Do not turn on app on phone (yet)
2 Turn on Spark
3 Turn on remote controller
4 Wait for the controller and Spark to link — green light on controller. Takes about 30 seconds.
5 Look on phone wifi list for controller wifi — not there?
6 Turn off controller
7 Restart controller
8 Wait for the controller and Spark to link — green light on controller (again, will be quicker this time)
9 Controller wifi appears in phone wifi list
10 Connect, check box about not able to access internet.
11 Open DJi app on phone.
12 Press Go Fly.

I did have a few other problems with wifi disconnecting using my Moto G4+ phone. I dug out my old Google Nexus 4, discarded most of the apps, it doesn’t have a sim card so no interference from calls etc, turned off bluetooth and anything else unnecessary and it’s working pretty well at the moment. I have never had any bother with the Spark or the controller, only the app, which, apparently, is not written for android. If I’d read the app reviews on Google Play beforehand, I would definitely have thought twice about buying DJi. |

Have you used your OTG cable the right way around? OTG cables have a «host» end and a «client» end. The host end goes into the R/C!

I can connect to the remote when not it is not connected to the drone but as soon as the drone is linked to the remote the phone is disconnected from remote and the remote WiFi network is not visible anymore. Hi, we’re sorry for the inconvenience. May we know if you manage to update the firmware of your aircraft and the remote controller? Would it be possible if you could provide us with a short video of this situation for a further check? You may upload the video using the google drive or dropbox then provide the link here. Please keep us posted on the latest progress.
A little update about the problem. Since my last message, I tried with an iPhone. The RC succeeded to connect the phone while it was already linked to the drone without any issue. So I really think it is coming from the Android compatibility.
To sum up here is the sequence of what is happening
1-I turn on RC
2- I connect the Android phone to the RC network (2.4Ghz Band)
3- I turn on the drone
4- Drone will connect automatically to the remote within 30 sec and the RC led turn green. The gimball control is working.
5- The wireless connection between the Android phone and the RC is interrupted and the RC network is no more visible
Note.
-If I connect the RC to the drone before the Android phone. The RC network is not even visible.
-if iPhone is used there is no problem
-at step 2. When I open the DJI Go app. Pop up is saying that the firmware of the RC is up to date.
-i am located in Cambodia
-android v9 is on my phone

Iiz ,
