Introduction

This guide shows you how to use the open source Radeon driver for some ATI/AMD graphics cards and APUs, which is part of the xserver-xorg-video-ati package.
This driver provides 2D and 3D acceleration in your video hardware. For the most recent releases of Ubuntu (and its flavours) this driver is usually as fast as the closed-source, proprietary fglrx driver (called AMD Catalyst) from AMD Inc. Furthermore the Radeon driver supports some older chipsets that fglrx does not.

The Radeon driver is already pre-installed in Ubuntu.

Identifying your graphics card or APU

First, check your graphic card name and chipset:

sudo update-pciids #optional command, requires internet

lspci -nn | grep -E 'VGA|Display'

It should report something like this for your graphics card and/or APU:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV710 [Radeon HD 4550]

If the report shows two different hardware devices, then you probably have a «hybrid graphics» system, with an iGP (integrated graphics processor inside the CPU) and a dedicated GPU.

Unsupported chips

• Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and newer: for some most recent graphics cards (R9 285, R9 380/380X, R9 M395X, R9 Nano/Fury/FuryX, RX 460/470/480, RX 550/560/570/580. ) and APUs (Carrizo, Stoney), the open-source AMDGPU driver is enabled by default. For Ubuntu 16.04 LTS AMDGPU-Pro hybrid driver is also available to download here (please read the release notes for known problems and limitations).
• Ubuntu 14.04 LTS: if you have Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with Linux kernel 4.4.0 (HWE stack Xenial), you can’t install the proprietary fglrx/Catalyst driver. However the open source AMDGPU driver is available to install through the xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu package.

Supported, but hardware is too old for Unity

These cards will not run Ubuntu’s Unity desktop with 3D acceleration. They will still run Unity, but the CPU will be used for basic drawing and performance may suffer. If you have one of these cards, a lighter desktop (such as XFCE or LXDE, found in Xubuntu and Lubuntu respectively) is recommended.

As an owner of a radeon 9600 m10 myself I can tell you that the appropriate driver is loaded by default on Linux Mint.

It has to be the open source one. It is 3d capable although if you’re migrating from Windows you may have noticed some loss in performance; this is because ATi dropped support for the card on their catalyst driver a long time. This is not crippling on Windows as the legacy driver they provide works there; it will not, though, work on current versions of Xorg — that means you should not install it. It simply will not work.

Fear not, the open source driver project seems quite active and performance is expected to improve over time.

When you say «anything» I can’t help but express my curiosity, as I render 3d models quite happily on my install. I wonder what it is that isn’t working out for you? It may well be something else which is causing the problem, which we might be able to help with.

[update]I’ve explored some other posts from the OP; if this is the exact same problem as before they should refrain from cross-posting, please. An initial investment could me made in an extra RAM module, but fwiw it wasn’t that long ago (Oct/Nov last) I was running reasonably happy on an a very similar machine. Perhaps I’m just more patient

i can run programs that don’t use 3d seamlessly but streaming video over the internet is choppy and any program that uses 3d will not work at all for example i run blender the top bar is missing but the app still works when i try to move anything it freezes or gets choppy or just shuts down. when i try to render a simple square it takes 4 times as long as it does to render the same thing in windows. it is just frustrating how slow major applications are

and also is the slowness fixed in 9?

I doubt there will be a major improvement in performance in mint 9, as that would depend upon improvements in the radeon driver itself rather than the distro; I wouldn’t want to rule out some improvement though with the new kernel and X drivers.

One way of assuaging those bugs/performance issues you have encountered is to sacrifice desktop effects.

That said, I do sympathize with your position and of course if you need Windows to do something then Windows is the way to go. The only other solution is to retrograde to a version of X, or a distro using a version of X, compatible with ATi’s legacy driver. At the end of the day, it was ATi’s decision to drop support for many of their older cards and it would be unjustified to ask that the rest of the Xorg using world be forced to wait for radeon to catch up before forging ahead.

Hope you get back to having fun/getting work done asap. I am impressed by the extent of the problem you have encountered (my own renders don’t take especially long, particularly not for something as straightforward), but do sympathize. Good luck.

Есть ли драйверы под ATI Radeon 9600 под Слаку или Дебиан?

Но не в РПМ, а в скажем в исходниках? Или лучше скажите как установить их на слаку или дебиан?

если честно у меня не АТИшная карточка .. но если уж напоролся на рпм — то rpm2tgz ( для слаки ) не прокатит ?

Джента их замечательно ставит из rpm посредством rpm2targz.

С нвидии перешел? зря. намучаешься. На сегодня ATI+linux — это не самая оптимальная комбинация. И работает криво, и подтормаживает местами, и глюки бывают нехилые (особенно в UT2004).

А вот для _работы_ — тут только Matrox будет лучше, чем ATi. Я говорю о фирменной нвидевской дурости — замыливание при высоком разрешении и высоком рефреше. Ну не точили карту под серьёзное 2D. Лучше всех в этом плане — Matrox (ещё со времён MilleniumII планку держат), вторые — ATi.
