[Solved] Disabling Nouveau Drivers on Linux Mint 17

Post by JonnyBB878 » Tue Jul 29, 2014 11:08 am

Hello, I’ve always wanted to switch to Linux but have been unable to do so due to gaming, now that Linux gaming is on the rise I would love to use this fantastic distro, In fact I’ve been running it in a virtual machine for some time to learn the ropes and the linux way.

For the life of me I can’t manage to install the Nvidia drivers since I need to disable the Nouveau ones first. I’ve googled here and there a bit but to no avail. Also I’d like to mention that I don’t want to rely on the Driver Manager application.

EDIT: I’ve used Linux quite a few times in the past so I’m not completely new to it but this kind of thing is way ahead of me.

I’m using Linux Mint 17 64bit v2 here and the whole harddisk is dedicated entirely to it, no Windows or any other distro are installed.

My setup procedure goes like this:

Ctrl + Alt + F1
Login with name and password
«sudo service mdm stop» command
I run the «NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-340.24.run» file, everything goes fine up until I get the Nouveau driver in use notification.

If someone could give me a rundown on what I have to do for a definitive solution that would be great as it would allow me to move to Linux for good this time.

CPU: Core i5 2400
Mobo: Gigabyte PA65-UD3-B3
Ram: 8GB DDR3
GPU: EVGA GTX 760
HDD: Hitachi 320gb Sata 2

Thanks in advance for your help.

Why do you insist on installing manually? Why do you not use the Linux Mint Driver Manager and allow it to do the job?

I prefer not having the Driver Manager doing it for me, I wouldn’t learn anything clicking 2 buttons and everything’s done automatically. Also the second reason is for another computer I have in the house which doesn’t have access to internet, the driver manager would be useless there since it has to download the files.

Telling from the Ubuntu webpage which explains hwo installing the NVidia driver works, the first step before running the downloaded Nvidia installer

sudo sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-340.24.run
sudo apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

Maybe again, follwing PatH57’s advice killing all X processes will be a good very first start point.

I know there have been threads reporting the same problem. Yet, Google refused to return any such old thread. Maybe I used the wrong search term(s).

Maybe blacklisting nouveau after having unloaded it manually will be a good idea, too. Cf. How to Install Nvidia Driver 331.38 in Ubuntu 14.04, 13.10, 12.04.

as usual Karl is right.
What’s the point sitting in front a terminal watching lines flowing by and not knowing anyway what they do and then being stuck with no X?
The safe way is to download the deb package, put it on a usb key, open package manager on the other unit, select file and add downloaded package, then install.
At least if you get error messages you can report them and we will be glad to help.

Ok so quick update, sorry been hell of a day.

I have successfully used the «sudo apt-get —purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau» command it did remove the nouveau packages and cinnamon desktop ran in Software acceleration mode so I guess it’s an improvement. However the nvidia drivers still refuse to install.

I tried the killall X command and returns an «X: no process found», does the command «service mdm stop» do the same thing?

Thanks for the help, so far it has been great. Hopefully I’ll piece up this puzzle soon.

Thank you all for your kind help. After piecing all the info together and a lot of googling I’ve installed them successfully.

In case someone wants to install them manually and offline, this is how I did it (Mint 17 64Bit Cinnamon):

Install the 2 following packages as the first thing:

Then open as sudo ‘etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf’ and add:

blacklist nouveau
blacklist vga16fb
blacklist rivafb
blacklist nvidiafb
blacklist rivatv

Go to a virtual console (hit Ctrl + Alt + F1)
Input your username and pass and run the following 3 commands:

sudo service mdm stop
sudo apt-get —purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (it will remove 2 packages related to Nouveau).
sudo update-initramfs -u

At this point your desktop will load in a low resolution (big icons) and Mint will tell you that Cinnamon is running in software mode which means you did the previous steps correctly.

Again hit Ctrl + Alt + F1
Input your username and pass
run the ‘sudo service mdm stop’ to close the X server
Now locate your Nvidia-xxxxxxxx.run file and run it using ‘sudo sh ./Nvidia-xxxxxxxx.run’

Accept the EULA
Next it will tell you that the pre-install script failed, just click continue here.
Regarding the DKMS entry, I chose no here.
When asked about the 32bit compatibility binaries choose yes.
When asked if you want to run the X Server choose yes as well.

When the installation is done hit Ctrl + Alt + Delete and let it reboot normally and the Nvidia Drivers will be working instantly.

Also for some reason the nvidia control panel isn’t loading the saved color corrections at boot so I’ve added this entry as part of the startup applications: nvidia-settings -l

Cheers! and Thanks again for the help.
