Any Tips/Tricks For Dual Monitor Setup?

Post by notyourbuddy » Tue Oct 18, 2011 10:54 pm

Hello . Being pretty new to Linux I am looking for any tips/tricks that any experience users can provide for running a simple dual monitor setup in Linux Mint 11.

  • Having a taskbar on the 2nd monitor
  • Removing dead space on my smaller monitor
  • My primary monitor is my laptop running on a 945/950 Intel Integrated gfx card with whatever drivers Mint supplies by default (I attached snippets from my lspci -v below)
  • Currently using Mint’s built-in monitor application (Preferences->Monitors) to achieve a dual monitor setup (its working fairly well, but with a few hiccups — I mention these down below)
  • Monitor #1 resolution 1280×800
  • Monitor #2 resolution 1920×1080
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/PM/GMS, 943/940GML and 945GT Express Memory Controller Hub (rev 03) Kernel driver in use: agpgart-intel 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Kernel driver in use: i915 Kernel modules: intelfb, i915 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
  • 2nd Taskbar: Looking through some tips on the web I found that I can manually add a second panel, move it to my 2nd monitor, and add in all the little widgets to it but I’m running into some problems with this. The problem is when I try to go back to a single monitor setup the taskbar that was on the 2nd monitor gets moved and stacked up on top of my primary monitor’s taskbar so that now I have two . I have no choice but to delete it, then go through all the hassle of resetting up a new panel/taskbar everytime I want to go back to a dual monitor setup. Since this is a laptop I frequently hop from a single monitor to a dual monitor setup. Any tips/advice on how to get a 2nd taskbar to work well?
  • Dead Space: My primary monitor’s height resolution is a lot lower than my secondary (see image): http://www.mediafire.com/i/?7z3y1297tgr45hm
Maximizing applications on the smaller screen works fine, but when I move my mouse to the top of this screen it doesnt stop, rather, it keeps going into the invisible virtual space. I’ve actually lost some applications up there before. Any way to properly clamp my smaller screen so the mouse can’t venture off into virtual land?
  • There are a lot of multi-monitor management tools for Windows users (UltraMon; MultiMon; etc). I’ve done a little searching and haven’t really found any free 3rd party tools for Linux. Are there any? (only thing I saw was Synergy, but that sounds like its for multiple-computer setups connected by a LAN or something)
  • I went to take a peek at my xorg.conf file out of curiosity only to find out one doesn’t exist. Don’t really know if this is a question. just kind of curious where it is hiding. Does it even exist? (I looked in /etc/x11/)
  • I am getting good performance with the default drivers provided in Mint so I have no reason to try and install different ones. But, I was wondering would there be any better multi-monitor support if I were to download and install some other graphics drivers (similar to how NVIDIA has its own specialized control panel)? I see in the repo xserver-org-video-intel: Package provides driver for Intel i9xx family including i945. Is that better than what the default Mint driver is? I also noticed Intel provides Open Source drivers at: http://intellinuxgraphics.org/download.html but they look like they would be a pain to install. Are those what Mint provides?

I have a set-up with dual monitors plus taskbars off a laptop running Linux Mint 11 Gnome. I simply installed the lxpanel package from the repository. The launcher is /usr/bin/lxpanel, which I put on the gnome taskbar. That way I can add or leave off the lxpanel at bootup with one click. Initially the lxpanel can probably appear just about anywhere, for example, on top of the gnome panel. So the first time (a one-time thing) you have to set it up where you want it by right clicking the lxpanel and choosing Panel Settings. For an on-off control on each panel I use lxrandr, again putting launchers on both panels for easy access regardless which panel is active. It is even easier if you have LXDE Mint as your primary desktop. You might get some additional ideas from http://douwil7.100webspace.net/linux/Tuning%20LXDE.html.

Hey! I finally got to try out your suggestion — definitely going to play around with it a little more when I get some time later tonight — but so far I’ve been popping my 2nd monitor in and out, restarting comp, etc trying to break it and I haven’t been able to. Little fella is working like a charm! And it was easy to setup too just had to adjust the margin. Thanks

(gotta say its little directory menu is pretty awesome too )

dual monitor, dual panel

Post by beachgardener » Thu Apr 14, 2016 8:53 pm

Hello, Can someone please point me to a tutorial on setting up a second independent panel on the second monitor please?

LinuxMint 17.3 Cinnamon 2.8.8

I did this with my own computer, If I could just remember how, now wanting to do this with laptop and attached monitor.
I add the panel to the attached monitor and I attempt to copy and paste applets, but not working for me. I need a tutorial that i can use now and copy to text file for future reference.

When this option for having independent panels came out in Cinnamon I did this on my desktop computer which has two monitors attached, I have separate menu buttons, clock you name it it is there on the second panel (some would’t replicate), but the main ones are there.

Thank you regards beachgardener.

after unsuccessful searches I ask here.

So far, panel edit mode on, modify panel, add panel, copy applets, paste applets, but nothing seems to happen, what am I missing?

How the devil is it possible to copy the applets and icons over to the other panel on the other screen, I have tried everything I can find, nothing works, the panel stays bare, There must be a bug in Cinnamon 2.8.8 that prevents the set up of the second panel, either that or it is just not user friendly, any help appreciated, thank you.
Is there a confirmation that the applets have been copied? When I try to paste there is a notice that all applets will be replaced, doesn’t matter if I choose yes or no, nothing happens, I tried restarting cinnamon, very frustrating.

in edit mode there are red, green and blue sections, not sure what that is about. I was able to move the whole panel but not replicate it.

[SOLVED] Dual monitor desktop help in linux mint 20 (AMD gpu)

Post by zed14 » Wed Mar 03, 2021 8:01 am

Hello guys, I am new to linux and linux mint, installed it yesterday, and i am loving it, however I am having this problem that my second monitor isnt getting detected my linux mint, both displays (g34wqc and benq zowie xl2411p) are connected with DP cables, but only the g34wqc is getting detected, when i run the xrandr command i get this :

xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 3440 x 1440, current 3440 x 1440, maximum 3440 x 1440 default connected primary 3440x1440+0+0 0mm x 0mm 3440x1440 89.00*

I read in some forums that it could be because of drivers, so i tried to install the amdgpu pro drivers from their official website and managed to install them, but when i rebooted it caused linux mint to go into fallback mode, so I had to unistall it, reboot and everything was back to normal, and searched a bit more and it seems that linux mint 20 comes with integrated drivers for amd and i cant install the pro amd drivers in it, and that is not a problem for me, I just wanted to see if i could get the dual monitor setup to work, i aldrady installed everything on driver and update managers. More info on my setup below:
