It is a pity that the manufacturer stopped the production of this radio. This is my favorite radio. I don’t remember charging it from the mains. It is always charged by the solar panel even though we don’t always have sunny weather. The internal battery 2000 mAh I would strengthen by 5000 mAh. Many Chinese manufacturers have adopted this. The speaker is quite loud and the sound quality suits me. In nature, he is always with me. At home, it stands on the windowsill, at hand. It is constantly charged by sunlight.
I liked it so much that I decided to buy it for sale. I live in Ukraine. Over the past 2-3 years, I have managed to sell about 250 units. When they ran out on Amazon USA, I set to work emptying the Amazon Canada warehouse. I bought everything and I’m happy)) Everything was sold.
In Ukraine, there is confidence in the products of the eton company. But there is still no official representative with service and warranty.

I wish I had paid closer attention to the existing reviews and differences between the base FRX5 and the -BT model. As other reviews have noted, the buttons are tiny and non-intuitive. The BT model does NOT allow use of AAA batteries or allow for the user to replace the lithium ion battery; if you are purchasing this for long term emergency use, keep in mind that your options to power this radio are more limited than other models. I emailed Eton support to inquire about how many full discharges one could expect from the built-in battery; I never heard back from them.
The radio has good reception, sounds good at decent audio levels, and connected to my phone’s Bluetooth audio easily enough. However, the build quality leaves something to be desired. It has a heft to it, which is nice, but where the seam connects beneath the handle, you can feel that two halves of the body don’t connect well. Not a huge issue, but it does not feel good in the hand (when using the flashlight).
Perhaps it’s a peculiarity of the unit that I received, but the rubber feet do not have the necessary angle to counter the angle of the radio base, so that the radio does not stand up straight. It always tilts forward or backward, and it is quite easily tipped over. I emailed Eton support to inquire about this (was this a design flaw, or a singular unit defect?). I never heard back from them on this matter either, so I consider manufacturer support limited.
Truthfully, I do consider these minor annoyances, but they are the kind that get really get under your skin if you’re not aware of them, and you’re not expecting them in what could be considered the flagship product of a line.
I would also suggest that potential buyers spend no more than $79 on this radio. I purchased at the full $99 price, and in the 30 days since then Amazon has discounted it at least twice to $79. (Amazon does not do price matching, either, so if you purchase at full price. tough.)
I am sure the radio will be a fine piece of tech for years to come (or as long as the non-replaceable battery holds a charge), but its shortcomings tacked onto a higher price tag make it a disappointing purchase.

I have both the FRX5 and the FRX5-BT (Bluetooth), and I like this radio. It is not perfect, though.
First the CONS:
1. Contrary to what the Eton site (http://www.etoncorp.com/en/productdisplay/frx5-bt) says, the BT models does not allow for replaceable batteries. As of today (3/6/2017) the Eton page still says «The FRX5-BT powers up in four fabulous ways—via solar panel, hand crank, built-in rechargeable lithium battery, or alkaline batteries.» This is true of the regular, non-bluetooth FRX5, but not the bluetooth model. The bluetooth model does not have the battery opening on the bottom.
2. Neither radio allows you to replace the rechargeable battery. This really should be a must for an expensive emergency radio. Rechargeable batteries can only be recharged a certain number of times, and some people chose to leave the radio always plugged in so it will be ready in an emergency. Sony and Midland make emergency radios with replaceable rechargeable batteries, and I wish Eton did likewise. Charge me a couple of extra dollars, but let me have a product that I know I can use for many years, and maybe even have a spare battery for!
3. The buttons are small, their labels are tiny, and they are covered by the handle, making it impossible to look straight down on them. This makes them hard to ready, which would normally be a bad design idea, but given that this is an emergency product, meant to be used by people who maybe have not touched it for months or years, and are now nervous about their upcoming emergency, this is just silly. I think their idea was to protect the buttons (which are back lit, to give them some credit), but where the buttons are located, you are likely to hit them when you carry the radio by its handle. Some of the buttons serve dual purposes, and unless you have the equally hard-to-read tiny manual with you, you would never figure them out on your own. Eton: The buttons need to be larger, with easy-to-read labels, and located where you read them in an emergency situation!
4. The radio’s initial configuration is clunky. This is partially due to the radio’s flexibility, S.A.M.E, and the different weather bands.
But, it’s not all bad. Check the PROS:
1. It works. Once you spend the time to configure it properly, it does what it’s designed to do, and signals you with different colors, sirens, or voice, depending on your choices, and if it’s signaling a «watch» or a «warning,» for instance.
2. It is rugged, has a drop rating, and is splash proof so you can use it in a storm. All of the jacks are covered with rubber, and the buttons will resist the rain.
3. The crank is solid, and can take the stress of repeated use.
4. The weather band reception in my area (Channel 7) works great.
5. I can turn up the volume pretty loud and still understand what the robotic NOAA warnings are saying. This is important if you are trying to listen while a storm or hurricane is in your area.
I hope Eton rethinks this design, and releases a model with the same capabilities but an improved user experience. In the meantime, I am happy with this imperfect radio.
Review of Etón Multi-Powered Emergency Weather Radio with Bluetooth®
Outdoor lovers will appreciate this item I am reviewing now- especially those who might need to charge their phones or tablets while outdoors. This would also be useful in case of a storm when the power has been knocked out. Today I’m talking about Etón’s FRX5-BT Emergency Weather Radio with Bluetooth®.
In the past, we reviewed a similar radio from Etón- the SolarLink FR360. I can’t find the review we did for that, but I’ll say that it worked okay for us, and we have taken it camping. The cell phone charger on it is not reliable unless you want to crank it for a while, and then you might only get a few minutes to call. This new FRX5, though, is a vast improvement.
For example, the FRX5 has a big solar panel that covers the whole back of the device, instead of the small panel on top of the handle. Where the solar panel was on the SolarLink handle, you now have an ambient light panel- in addition to the LED flashlight and emergency beacon on the side. After you turn off the flashlight or light panel, the strips around them will glow. The charging of cell phones/tablets seems to work much better on the FRX5. I didn’t have to crank anything to charge my phone this time.
This product has Bluetooth capabilities in addition to being able to play tunes off the radio. In addition, you can get NOAA weather alerts and S.A.M.E. alerts.
There are a few ways of charging- with the solar panel on the back, by turning the crank, or charging through the included USB cable. The first two methods are going to come in really handy in situations where the power is out, or you are out camping. Cranking won’t give you much time for your effort, so hopefully you will have some sun to help out. Or you can make sure it’s fully charged before you go. There is a handy little display on the front that will show you how much battery it has.
With this emergency radio being splashproof (not waterproof), and drop-proof from a height of 3.3 ft (depending on drop situations according to the website), I think this would make a great addition to camping supplies, and emergency prep kits.
You can buy it for $99.99 on Amazon.com.
