Fail to install kali linux

An installation step failed. You can try to run the failing item again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else

I’m having an issue installing Kali in VirtualBox from the iso. I’ve followed these instructions, but I’m getting an error:

An installation step failed. You can try to run the failing item again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Select and install software.

This type of question has been asked by others, but all the solutions seem to be increasing disk space, which I’ve done. I’m using VB 6.1.6 r137129 (Qt5.6.2) and the latest Kali I think I’m installing a rather minimal setup. I’ve set up what should be plenty of RAM and hard drive space: Setup: https://i.stack.imgur.com/k6Vz6.png https://i.stack.imgur.com/qGXYv.png Installing: https://i.stack.imgur.com/Orj5C.png Error occurs during the middle of the «select and install software» process: https://i.stack.imgur.com/FKHIh.png

Welcome to U&L, please check our guidelines, as a rule we don’t usually post images, uploads and links are preferred. If you want a «hassle free» Kali VM install then it may be worth taking a look here and just grabbing a ‘pret-a-porter’ vm image than struggling with the install.

It seems that this is a relatively new error since most threads I fould on this topic are only a few months old, and I didn’t find any answers while searching.

I tried to increase the disk space all the way to 60 GB, give the VMware 2 cores and 4 GB or RAM, but it didn’t help. So it does not seem to be a resource problem but a bug with something.

I found only one way arount it: to install the pre-built VMware version of Kali from kali/downloads. Unpack dhe ZIP file and run the VM with the file you downloaded; you will instantly go straight to the login/password prompt (which is kali ) and have access to the Kali linux tools.

The cons are that it is not a full version of Kali Linux, meaning I ran into a lot of missing important pentesting tools; even simple tools like armitage were not there.

You also will not have full root access to the VM, so if you type e.g. ifconfig it will show you «Unknown command», so make sure you use sudo for those commands (or become root with sudo su ). That way, you can also install the missing tools you need.

Another problem is that it doesn’t seem to have any means to save your progress, which means its useless; every work you do will be erased moment you shut it down (which sucks . )

Kali Linux 2020 error – Installation step failed: select and install software

Installing Kali Linux 2020.2 on a VM and receiving an error during the initial install of the OS.

“Installation step failed” … “the failing step is: Select and install software”

If you are receiving this error, there could be a few causes, including no internet connection, bad install image, or most likely, your install drive is too small. Closeout of the running VM and go back to the machine settings. Increase the drive above 30GB. If you are using a dynamic size disk, make sure it too starts out of a default size above 30GB. The error is caused by the installer seeing that there is not enough free space to install the OS and erroring out.

At the time of writing this, the default size for Kali 2020.2 alone with basic install options is 25GB, not including a swap partition.

hi
I allot 10 GB Swap Area
and 60 GB HDD Partition.
after that This error is showing “Installation step failed” … “the failing step is: Select and install software”.

Hello Hemant, did you try a fresh install on that new HDD Partition also does the VM have an active internet connection? I have seen sometimes that causes some odd errors if it does not

I have this same error and cannot seem to get past it. I have allocated 2048MB for my memory and 40GB for the hard drive space. Is there any fix or suggestions? I have a screenshot as well but it looks just like your screenshot. Thanks

Hello Mark, did you try a fresh install on that new HDD Partition also does the VM have an active internet connection? I have seen sometimes that causes some odd errors if it does not

I am facing same issue as mentioned above but i am installing kali linux as an dual boot with window 10 any fix ?

i just got it to work, when installing the tools only install top ten ones, the live ones did not work when trying.

Hi,
i am totally new to Linux and wanted to install Kali on my old HP laptop. I am currently facing the problem, you mentioned above and i can#t fix it. I have 240GB Samsung SSD built in and about 2 GB RAM. I am going crazy.
Thanks for your Help.

I’ve had the same issue. I was allocating 8GB for the HDD and it was raising the same error. Never realized that it could the the HDD space issue. Your post helped me resolve my issue. Thanks a lot.

I have the same problem mentioned above while installing debian. I have lenovo with 500GB and there is already 2 OS installed, Windows 10 and Ubuntu 20.04. I just wanted to test out and use debian for a while so I allocated 50 gb which in turn set 1 gb for swap and rest 49 gb as main storage. Also my internet connection is connected and working. I looked up online everywhere for a fix but can’t find one. I would really be grateful if there is a fix for it. I am anyway gonna reinstall this once more and experiment and will surely reply to this if I find a solution. Thank you for your help in advance

I fixed it by doing multiple changes at once. I don’t know which one of these changes fixed the problem but I will mention all of them here. There are some points that I think might have been the problem (note: I am not sure which one was it nor am I pin pointing at a single one)
The first time when I booted Debian installer I hadn’t made an un allocated partition for the new OS beforehand so I had to do it in the installer, so what I did was split an existing drive and allocated 50 GB for Debian. (This could have been the problem) The next thing that could’ve been the problem was when it asked network archive mirror, I selected continue without it. The changes I made were these. Before booting the installer the second time, I did some pre config. I booted up my Windows 10 and installed “Mini tool Partition Wizard” (which is pretty cool, I’ve been using it for a while and it always serves the purpose), and split and deleted partition here and there and set an un allocated partition, a full 60GB this time (Note: last time I only put 50GB but this time I increased 10GB. I don’t think there’s much difference but just incase). Btw this takes a bit time too. It will restart a couple times etc. Now I booted the installer and did all the necessary and also pressed “yes” for the network archive mirror, selected “United States” (I don’t live there neither am I close to there but I was confused what to select and my country wasn’t listed). Then I selected deb.debian.org which was selected by default for me. And then the rest of the installation ran smoothly without any errors or bugs like selecting desktop environment, installing GRUB etc. (it took some time though but worth it I guess) There you go. This is how fixed it. Hope it helps Thank You. If you need more help or don’t understand some technical parts, I am more than happy to help you. My Instagram & Twitter ID: an4s911

An installation step failed. Kali Linux Install Error

I’ve recently face an error with Kali Linux install in VMware Player and even after giving ample enough space /resources it was keep falling with install step failed and I’ve confirm that VM installer has internet access.

This is pretty much loop back even after restart the install. I’ve tried many times and different methods to install and come back to screen saying hit continue and it will bring up menu that you can skip the step of installing software, pretty much you will loose the GUI and all Kali packages.

After few hours browsing and cursing this the method I used to get kali install and functioning.

**** Basically hit continue and once you come to next step where you have option to skip, skip the step and installer will continue but when kali boot back you will be presented with basic debain shell.

****Log into the shell with your username and password then run these in a order and reboot. Make sure that your Kali can reach to the internet.

This command will install GUI XFACE, after install you will be able to log into Kali GUI.

***sudo apt-get install kali-desktop-xfce

Then you need to update kali install,

After this kali need to download base tool set via meta package install. This step will install base Kali tool and some other top tools. You can refer to this link for Kali meta packages in detail https://tools.kali.org/kali-metapackages

*** sudo apt update && sudo apt install kali-linux

An installation step failed! Kali Linux 2016.2 64 Bit

If I click continue then after a while the error reappears. I tried a lot of time to install but failed everytime.

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M430 @2.27GHz Ram: 8.00 GB Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 OS: Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit 6.1.7601, Service Pack 1

Version: 12.1.0 build-3272444 (64Bit)

VMware Image version is 2016.1 but current Kali Linux version is 2016.2 and I also found that people are having similar problem with their physical computer also.

Yeah! I know it, but why I can’t able to install it in VMware that makes me mad, I’m geek so I’ve to figure out the problem with the help of other! not only me I searched over internet and there’s a lot of people facing same kind of problem while installing Kali Linux either in VM or Physical Machine! I need to figure out this kali linux installation problem because I thought after I install it to VMware then I would install it to my system! But I’m failing install it to VMware. Thanks

Kali is a rolling distro which based on debian testing, so it is always in beta phase. Fill a bugreport at kali site, then be patient. It is the normal behavior a beta system. If you have power+time, feel free to fix it then share the patch. Kali is not a stable distribution, you have to deal with it. Minor and major bugs are totally normal and not your fault.

I had the same problem, and I have fixed it by increasing the space for the hard drive. By default you have 8 GB, increase it to 30 GB or more. And continue with the installation.

A quick solution might be specifying file system usage, meaning is that using a single container not a seperated for /usr, /var, /tmp ..

Installation failed on trying to use separated partitions, but as suggested using single partition succeeded.

I faced exactly the same predicament as your’s and extensive search on internet did not yield any straight-forward answer.

My host OS level(Windows 7), VMWare version and Kali linux version & settings for Kali install attempt are similar to yours with the exception — that I did chose separate partition for /home, /var & /temp — I chose varying disk capacity size which you chose as 30G

While trying repeatedly to install with differing settings I noticed following pattern: — for 8G disk capacity setting the install step failed after approx. 20% completion — for 20G disk capacity setting the install step failed after approx. 40% completion — for 40G disk capacity setting the install step failed after approx. 80% completion

Finally the install step succeeded with 60G disk capacity value. So try increasing your disk capacity and give it a shot!
