Make android apps believe Wifi is connected.

Handy in situations where there is a (non wifi) connection, but some app won’t do its thing unless it’s on wifi ( android running in virtual machine / emulator, 3g but no wifi around, usb 3g modem connection, usb reverse tethering . )

With this you can for instance access wifi-only features while on 3g.
If you’re used to iOS, it’s the android equivalent of 3g Unrestrictor or My3G.

Tested on Android KitKat 4.4.2, play store working over ppp !

No app is faked by default. Open FakeWifiConnection app to enable/disable hack (master switch) and select which apps to fake. Changes take effect immediately (background apps need a reboot).

• Install Xposed Framework.
  Get installer from http://repo.xposed.info/
  Open Xposed Installer->Framework->Install
  Reboot
• Install FakeWifiConnection.apk
  Open Xposed Installer->Modules, tick FakeWifiConnection
  Reboot
• Open FakeWifiConnection app to change settings.

Debug messages are disabled by default.
To enable set debug_level to 1 with Preferences Manager and reboot.

logcat | grep FakeWifiConnection

After updating to Android 11 (and MIUI 12.5) I have Internet connection only when using my browsers.
All other apps don’t have access to the Internet. Any ideas how to fix that?

I have Internet when connected to wifi, but I want to use gnirehtet only. I didn’t have this issue before the update.

OK, then probably the apps check for wifi/mobile access, and the old MIUI ROM returned true when a VPN was enabled and now it returns false (just a guess).

In any case, I don’t know what gnirehtet could do.

I experience the same thing on Android 10 custom ROM. Some apps work, some do not.

gnirehtet is a wonderful great tool. It would be nice to have a solution for this issue.
I understand an app needs to think it has WiFi/mobile access in order to work with gnirehtet.
So I thought. can we simulate an existing WiFi connection while the physical WiFi chip is off, in order to make the app think it has WiFi access?

I looked for a solution and found two apps:

Both are based on the Xposed Framework, which is discontinued and not available for newer Android versions. So I tried the apps with the EdXposed framework and the 2nd app FakeWifiConnection works for me on a rooted device.

1. install Magisk app (newest version Magisk.apk from https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases/)
2. 4th symbol in the Magisk app: Modules -> install from memory: riru-v25.4.4-release.zip from https://github.com/RikkaApps/Riru/releases
3. 4th symbol in the Magisk app: Modules -> use the online search to install «Riru -EdXposed» v0.5.2.2 from solohsu, MlgmXyysd
4. install EdXposedManager.apk from https://github.com/ElderDrivers/EdXposedManager/releases
   go into EdXposedManager, the app should show a blue checkmark with «EdXposed Framework is active», provide root access when needed, maybe system reboot is needed
5. install FakeWifiConnection.apk from https://github.com/lemonsqueeze/FakeWifiConnection/raw/master/FakeWifiConnection/bin/FakeWifiConnection.apk
6. go into EdXposedManager, menu top left, modules, activate Fake Wifi Connection, maybe system reboot is needed
7. go into FakeWifiConnection, select apps you want to fake WiFi for, save
8. use gnirehtet and be happy 🙂

I hope this helps others to utilize gnirehtet to its full potential. Faking a WiFi connection while the physical WiFi chip is off is a nice workaround and exactly what I want.
It would be nice to have a newer and more compatible app, maybe without framework, to fake WiFi and make this process easier.
