How To Install AVG Free Antivirus on Ubuntu
In this tutorial, we will show you how to install AVG Free Antivirus on Ubuntu. For those of you who didn’t know, AVG Free is a version of the AVG anti-virus, spyware, and malware protection software that is free for private and non-commercial use. It helps you avoid spyware and other harmful unwanted viruses. Unfortunately, AVG doesn’t provide you simple user graphic interface but you still be able to run it in text mode on the terminal.
This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple. I will show you through the step-by-step installation avg free antivirus on the Ubuntu system.
Prerequisites
- A server running one of the following operating systems: Ubuntu Linux.
- It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.
- An active internet connection. You’ll need an internet connection to download the necessary packages and dependencies for AVG.
- A non-root sudo user or access to the root user . We recommend acting as a non-root sudo user , however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.

Step 1. First, make sure that all your system packages are up-to-date by running the following apt commands in the terminal.
sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade
Step 2. Install AVG Free package on Ubuntu Linux.

After installing the package, update the virus definitions by running:
Step 3. Configure AVG Anti-Virus.
As you see in the installation method on Ubuntu, AVG is installed and started, but not configured. Run the following command to configure AVG Free to scan your emails for known viruses, spyware, and other malware:
Step 4. Scan files and directories using AVG.
You can scan files and directories on-demand by running avgscan . Avg scan is a command-line anti-virus scanner:
-l, --heal Automatically heal infected object. -t, --delete Automatically delete infected object. -u, --vv-move Automatically move infected object into vault. -U, --vv-backup Backup infected object if healed by deletion.
Scan /home directory and its sub-directories recursively and store the report in the /var/log/avgscan.log file, run the following command:
avgscan -aPcijk -r /var/log/avgscan.log /home

Antivirus / Avg
AVG Free is a version of the AVG anti-virus software which is free for private and non-commercial use.
There is no offical graphical interface available for the current Linux versions of AVG, but there is a free, third-party one called AVG-GUI.
Install AVG Free
- Note: If you are using a 64-bit version of Ubuntu, you may need to install 32-bit compatibility packages. See MultiArch.
Run daemons at boot or on-demand
By default, the AVG package sets up several daemons to start when the system is booted. If you only run scans occasionally, you may not want to run the daemons all the time. In this case, you can disable the daemons’ automatic starting by running:
sudo update-rc.d avgd disable
Then, when you want to run a scan, start the daemons by running:
You can stop the daemons afterwards by running:
If you decide later that you want to run the daemons at boot again, simply reinstall the package.
Update virus definitions
After installing the package, you should update the virus definitions by running:
Scan files and directories
You can scan files and directories on-demand by running avgscan. Refer to the avgscan man page for details. A thorough, «paranoid» scan, storing the report in a file, might look like:
avgscan -aPcijk -r /tmp/avgscan.log /path1 /path2

Q: Are viruses, trojans and malware a threat to a linux system as in Windows?
A: No, there’s a very few viruses to linux and the few are not out in the wild. The way a Linux/unix is build up makes it difficult to do any serious damage to the system, in fact I’ve never heard from people who got their Linux/unix system infected.
Q: So why install an anti-virus application/program?
A: For an ordinary Linux Home user with only one OS system their’s no need for Anti-virus, but people who’s running network, server or dual booting with win OS this tool can be very handy to scan for virus.
Q: I’m a home user only running Linux do I need it?
A: No, a firewall is way better as protection in that case.

Re: [HOWTO] AVG Professional Edition for Ubuntu 64-bit
I have used earlier the free version on Windows machine but found after one year of usage that AVG free doesn’t catch quite a number of trojans. I don’t know about the professional version.

P.S.————————————————————————————————
I am dual booting with Windows Vista, and already have FireStarter installed, I wanted to know how strong is the AVG FREE edition’s protection? Do I need to/should configure some other things to make my system more secure? Which things? Is it enough with what I already have (assuming I do install AVG AntiVirus)?
