Where is Firefox profile stored

Post by wpshooter » Thu Apr 13, 2017 10:16 am

What folders / files need to be saved in order to export ALL of the information regarding my Firefox browser so that they could be transferred to another instance of Firefox (say on another computer or a new installation of Linux Mint) and where are they located on the Linux Mint file system ?

Note: I am NOT talking about JUST bookmarks.

Set your file-manager to show hidden files (i.e., ones beginning with a period) if operating from the GUI. «~/» means your home directory.

Does /.mozilla contain everything that is needed to replicate all Firefox/browser settings on the target computer ?

A follow up on this old question.

Does everything in the .mozilla folder need to be transferred to move all settings, etc. over to the new
operating system installation or does just the profiles.ini file under Firefox sub-folder need to be transferred ?

Everything. The whole folder. Well, if you want the longer answer, no, some files will be recreated by FF itself if they don’t exist, but there’s no point trying to figure each & every out the very many ones, just use the whole folder, and FF will take care of the rest.

Your actual profile is stored in ~/.mozilla/firefox , but as mentioned, transferring the entire ~/.mozilla directory is best. I’ve done this countless times without issue. You might also opt to transfer Firefox’s cache, which is in ~/.config/mozilla/firefox ; this isn’t necessary, but might be desired.

What have I been missing all these years? I only transfer the «mwad0hks.default» located in ./mozilla/firefox—I’ve even used this file when testing other distros by editing the profiles.ini file located in the same folder. Anyone see a problem with this?

dpkg -S /etc/skel/.mozilla mint-artwork-common: /etc/skel/.mozilla

. the short answer:
1) the whole .mozilla folder can possibly contain multiple profiles. plus,
2) this way end-users don’t even need to be aware of the existence of profiles.ini files (regardless if they use one or more profiles. )

you will turn on SYNC, and set the Settings up to keep everything, it won’t matter.

I have Sync turned on and can go to my Win7 desktop and everything is still the same.

and I can assure you, that Windows is not Linux

One additional question regarding transferring info/settings, etc. from one Firefox installation to another computer.

Is there a remote possibility that moving the mozillia/firefox information from an old installation to a new Linux Mint installation which would most likely
have a newer version of Firefox present any compatibility problems when being used with a newer version of Firefox or is the info in mozillia/firefox completely
independent (so to speak) of the Firefox application/code itself ?

Well, yes and no. Some extensions/add-ons that worked in the old Firefox version, might be disabled in the new Firefox because they’re incompatible.

For the rest I know of no problems; all other stuff, notably the all-important bookmarks, get transferred nicely. At least in my experience.
