How to Install Grub-Customizer in Ubuntu 22.10|23.04 to Configure Boot Menu
This simple tutorial shows how to install Grub-Customizer and use this graphical tool to configure the boot-loader in Ubuntu 22.10.
Grub Customizer is a popular tool to configure Linux’s default Grub boot-loader. With it, user can easily move, remove, and rename the boot entries, change default system to boot if you have Linux dual- or multi-boot with other OSes, add kernel parameters, and change the menu screen appearance, select theme (if any).
The software was available in Ubuntu system repository. But removed in recent Ubuntu releases due to scripting issue, which may break the process when upgrading Ubuntu to a higher version. The software developer has fixed the issue by releasing a new version and made it into PPA.
Step 1: Add Grub Customizer PPA & install the app
1. Firstly, open a terminal window by either pressing Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut key on keyboard or searching from ‘Activities’ overview.
When terminal opens, run the command below to add its official PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:danielrichter2007/grub-customizer
Type user password when it asks while no asterisk feedback and hit Enter to continue.
2. After adding the PPA, refresh your system package cache by running command below in terminal. Though, it should be done automatically since 20.04
And, finally install the Grub Customizer tool by running command:
sudo apt install grub-customizer
NOTE: for Ubuntu 23.04, the PPA does not contain the package at the moment! Try downloading the one for Ubuntu 22.10 from the link below:
Then, right-click on file and select “Open with Software Install” to install it.
Step 2: Configure boot menu via Grub Customizer
After installation, search for and open the tool either from ‘Activities’ overview or start menu depends on your desktop environment.
Then you may click edit the menu entries in first tab, or use the arrow tool bar buttons to remove, re-arrange them.
Under the second ‘General’ tab, you may select an entry to boot as default or make it automatically boot the last entry. There you can also show/hide the menu, set timeout, and add a kernel parameter, and use advanced options to control more about the boot-loader.
The last ‘Appearance’ tab allows to set text font, color, and background color, select a background image. However, these settings will override the current theme (if any).
To set a custom resolution, it’s better to check out all supported values by booting to Grub boot menu, press c to get into console. Finally, run set pager=1 and vbeinfo command one by one to tell. It will just fallback to default resolution if an invalid value specified.
And, do remember to click ‘Save’ button to apply changes you made, so it will work in next boot.
Summary
In general, Grub Customizer is removed form Ubuntu repository since Ubuntu 22.04 due to bug. Software developer fixed the issue and made the package into PPA, however for Ubuntu 22.04 only at the moment. As a workaround, user may manually download and install the .deb package, which is working good in my case.

How to Install Grub Customizer on Ubuntu
The Grub Customizer is a handy GUI tool that lets you configure various aspects of the Grub bootloader.
You can also use it to boot automatically into the last booted entry. Don’t like the dark black and white theme? You can even change the background of the grub boot screen.
There are several other customization options available as well. The best thing here is that you can do all this using a graphical application. No need to touch the grub configuration files located at /etc/default/grub and /boot/grub2 in the command line.
You don’t need to be afraid of the terminal but using a GUI tool is always more comfortable.
Let’s see how to install Grub Customizer in Ubuntu Linux.
Installing Grub Customizer in Ubuntu
Ubuntu started providing Grub Customizer in the Universe repository with version 20.04.
Check your Ubuntu version. If you are using Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, you can install it using the following command:
sudo apt install grub-customizer
You may even find it in the Software Center.
But Grub Customizer is not available in Ubuntu 22.04. This was due to a bug noticed with Grub Customizer in version 22.04.
While the developer has fixed the bug, the application remains absent from the Ubuntu repositories in version 22.04.
Don’t worry. You can still install Grub Customizer in Ubuntu 22.04.
Installing Grub Customizer in Ubuntu 22.04 using PPA
There is an official PPA available from the developer of Grub Customizer. You can use it to install the latest version in any Ubuntu version.
Now use the following command to add the PPA to your system. This way, you’ll get updates on the Grub Customizer application along with the rest of the system updates.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:danielrichter2007/grub-customizer
You’ll be asked to enter your account’s password. Nothing is seen on the screen when you type the password. That’s normal. Press enter when you are asked for confirmation.
Ubuntu automatically refreshes the repository cache after adding a new repository. This means that you can install the application now using the apt command:
sudo apt install grub-customizer
And that’s about it. Wait for a few seconds and you’ll have Grub Customizer installed.
Press the super key (Windows key) and start typing Grub Customizer. It will show the application icon in the menu. Click on it and start it.
Since you are indirectly modifying configuration files, you need to have elevated privileges to use this application. You’ll be asked to enter your account password.
Once opened, you’ll see an interface similar to this:
You can learn some Grub customization tips in this article. GUI or not, it is always wise to make a Timeshift backup so that you can safely revert any unpleasant change.
Before I end this tutorial, let me show you the steps for removing Grub Customizer.
Remove Grub Customizer from Ubuntu
Open a terminal and use the following command to remove it:
sudo apt remove grub-customizer
If you had added the PPA, you should remove the PPA as well.
sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:danielrichter2007/grub-customizer
And that’s all you need to know about installing and removing Grub Customizer on an Ubuntu Linux system.
