Grand Theft Auto V Tips
To run the Epic Games version of GTA5, we need to install the Mac version of Heroic Games Launcher:
To Install:
1. Install Heroic Games Launcher: https://github.com/Heroic-Games-Launcher/HeroicGamesLauncher/releases
2. Link your Epic Games account to Heroic Games Launcher
3. Install GTA 5
4. Create new Windows 7 64-bit bottle with the name ‘Heroic’ (you can call this whatever you want, really, but if you name it anything other than Heroic you’ll need to update this in Heroic Games Launcher)
5. Install Rockstar Games Launcher into this bottle
To Play:
1. Launch Rockstar Games Launcher from Crossover
2. Launch GTA 5 from Heroic Games Launcher
(Keep Rockstar Games Launcher running to play GTA 5, otherwise if you just launch from Heroic Games Launcher you will hit an indefinite loading screen)
Further Notes:
-I ran into some issues with the graphics settings not sticking and was in an endless loop of setting/restarting and setting again, I ended up running the graphics benchmark test in game which set the graphics for me and it finally stuck. I was able to update some further settings after this as well. There are some occasional stutter issues, but very much playable. This is using DirectX 10 per the in game graphics settings.

On first launch, resolution in Grand Theft Auto may be a bit borked. Switch game to borderless windowed mode in settings to workaround that.
Only installs Rockstar Games Launcher. You will need to install Grand Theft Auto V inside the launcher.
On first launch, resolution in Grand Theft Auto may be wrong. Workaround: Switch the game to borderless windowed mode in settings.
When a young street hustler, a retired bank robber and a terrifying psychopath find themselves entangled with some of the most frightening and deranged elements of the criminal underworld, the U.S. government and the entertainment industry, they must pull off a series of dangerous heists to survive in a ruthless city in which they can trust nobody, least of all each other.
Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) for PC offers players the option to explore the award-winning world of Los Santos and Blaine County in resolutions of up to 4k and beyond, as well as the chance to experience the game running at 60 frames per second.
The game offers players a huge range of PC-specific customization options, including over 25 separate configurable settings for texture quality, shaders, tessellation, anti-aliasing and more, as well as support and extensive customization for mouse and keyboard controls. Additional options include a population density slider to control car and pedestrian traffic, as well as dual and triple monitor support, 3D compatibility, and plug-and-play controller support.
Grand Theft Auto V for PC also includes Grand Theft Auto Online, with support for 30 players and two spectators. Grand Theft Auto Online for PC will include all existing gameplay upgrades and Rockstar-created content released since the launch of Grand Theft Auto Online, including Heists and Adversary modes.
The PC version of Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online features First Person Mode, giving players the chance to explore the incredibly detailed world of Los Santos and Blaine County in an entirely new way.
Grand Theft Auto V for PC also brings the debut of the Rockstar Editor, a powerful suite of creative tools to quickly and easily capture, edit and share game footage from within Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online. The Rockstar Editor’s Director Mode allows players the ability to stage their own scenes using prominent story characters, pedestrians, and even animals to bring their vision to life. Along with advanced camera manipulation and editing effects including fast and slow motion, and an array of camera filters, players can add their own music using songs from GTAV radio stations, or dynamically control the intensity of the game’s score. Completed videos can be uploaded directly from the Rockstar Editor to YouTube and the Rockstar Games Social Club for easy sharing.
Soundtrack artists The Alchemist and Oh No return as hosts of the new radio station, The Lab FM. The station features new and exclusive music from the production duo based on and inspired by the game’s original soundtrack. Collaborating guest artists include Earl Sweatshirt, Freddie Gibbs, Little Dragon, Killer Mike, Sam Herring from Future Islands, and more. Players can also discover Los Santos and Blaine County while enjoying their own music through Self Radio, a new radio station that will host player-created custom soundtracks.

Wine (originally an acronym for «Wine Is Not an Emulator») is a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, Mac OSX, & BSD. This subreddit is for the discussion of using WINE to play video games.
As you may or may not have noticed GTA V is free on the Epic Games Launcher at the moment: https://www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/product/grand-theft-auto-v/home
I spent quite some time to get it to work with Wine/Proton, so I thought I’d share my experience here. Hopefully it will be useful to others.
Requirements: Steam with proton, protontricks and wine, winetricks
Step 1: Make an account and claim the free GTA V
Should be self explanatory, link is above.
Step 2: Download and install the Epic Games Launcher
Download the launcher, and install it. You can use a separate wine prefix if you want. You may get an error, this is resolved by using the -SkipBuildPatchPrereq argument on the launcher.
The Launcher does not work with dxvk, lots of flickering which makes it unusable. To fix it, you can use the -opengl argument to force the launcher into opengl mode. This requires that dotnet48 is installed into the wineprefix with winetricks.
Step 3: Add the Epic Games Launcher as a non-steam game to Steam
This is required because the Rockstar Games Launcher does not work in regular wine or wine staging at the moment (at least it doesn’t for me). For some reason the cursors goes below the window, which makes it impossible to complete the installation of the Rockstar Games Launcher.
However, it works just fine in >=proton-5.0 . Therefore, we add the Epic Games Launcher that we just installed to steam: ‘Games’ —> ‘Add non-steam game to my library’.
There currently is a bug in steam where a path containing spaces is not parsed correctly when adding a non-steam game. Therefore, after adding the game, right click it in the library and select ‘Properties’. Make sure «Target:» is set to the correct path, and that «Set Launch Options» is set to ‘-opengl’ (If the path contained spaces the part of the path after the space ends up in the launch options, if this is the case, clear it and add ‘ -opengl ‘).
Also, select «Force use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool» and choose ‘ Proton 5.0-7 ‘. For some reason, it didn’t correctly save the settings for me, so you might need to re-open the properties menu and confirm everything is set correctly.
Step 4: Add dotnet48 to the proton prefix
Launch the launcher through steam once, you will get a black screen after logging in. This is because the ‘ -opengl ‘ argument does not work without dotnet48. So close the launcher (‘Exit’ in the system tray). And then use protontricks -s , this should return something like this:
% protontricks -s GTA Found the following games: Non-Steam shortcut: GTA V (2677306004) To run protontricks for the chosen game, run: $ protontricks APPID COMMAND NOTE: A game must be launched at least once before protontricks can find the game.
Make note of the game ID, we use it to install dotnet48 to the correct proton prefix e.g: protontricks 2677306004 dotnet48
Once this is done (there is some manual clicking and accepting of terms involved) start the Epic Games Launcher from steam again. This time it should work.
Step 5: Download the game from the Epic Games Launcher
Should also be self-explanatory, it’s ~100GB so it’s quite a long wait.
Step 6: Run the game once
Once the download is done, press launch in the Epic Games Launcher to launch the game. This should start the installation process of the Rockstar Games Launcher (This is where I got stuck using regular wine(-staging) instead of proton, the cursor goes below the installation window making me unable to click the «English» button). Once this is completed, the Rockstar Games Launcher will try to launch the game, it will fail (at least it did for me). However, if you go back to the Epic Games Launcher and try again it should work.
Step 7: Enjoy
The game should now start and be playable (you will be prompted to login with a Rockstar Social Club account). For me the graphics settings were all set to the lowest options, including the resolution. So you might have to tweak that a bit.
