ATI Radeon HD 2400/2600 On Linux

This week has been extremely exciting to say the least. We started by telling you about the AMD 8.41 Display Driver which is largely rewritten and offers Radeon HD 2000 product support, performance improvements, and soon will support AIGLX. Four articles looking at the R300/400, R500, and R600 performance under Linux followed that preview. Then yesterday we told you about AMD’s new open-source strategy for supporting Linux and the open-source community. Well, what do we have for you today? With the 8.41 display driver we have completed some additional benchmarks using the Radeon HD 2400PRO 256MB and Radeon HD 2600PRO 256MB graphics cards. In this article, we see if these two mid-range ATI Radeon HD 2000 graphics cards are able to compete against NVIDIA’s GeForce 8 series.

The Radeon HD 2400PRO we had used for testing was manufactured by Sapphire while the Radeon HD 2600PRO was made by ASUS. The Sapphire HD 2400PRO has a passive heatsink while the ASUS HD 2600PRO claims to run 20 degrees (°C) cooler than the reference heatsink. We had previously written a preview on the ASUS Radeon HD 2600PRO where you can find additional details about this mid-range graphics card. The test system consisted of an Abit NF-M2 nView motherboard, 2GB of DDR2-800 memory, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ processor, and Seagate 200GB 7200.8 hard drive. The Linux distribution we had loaded up was Fedora 7 with the Linux 2.6.22.4 kernel and X server 1.3. For comparison against NVIDIA’s GeForce 8 series we had used the GeForce 8500GT 256MB and GeForce 8600GT 256MB. The 8600GT was the GV-NX86T256D from Gigabyte and the 8500GT was also made by Gigabyte. We had also tested an older ASUS X1300PRO 256MB graphics card. Benchmarks were done in Doom 3 and Quake 4.

Hd 2400 pro linux

I just got an ATI Readeon HD24000 pro. I am trying to find out if it is compatible with linux before I install it. I mean compatible in the sense that all features work, not just some. I am going to use this card to connect my pc to my tv so that I can watch content from my pc on the bigger screen. I got this one because it has svideo output and adapter for composite video connection. Sounds promising.

Is this a good card? Or are there better options? The thing is that I dont want to go above U$100,00 on this.

I am going to start looking for a how to connect this card to a tv, configuration steps and all. Does anyone know of a good one?

Do you guys have any advice? Should I return it and get something else?

Do you have any recommendations of good cards besides the HD3650? It is a bit pricey. I guess I will just go to the hardware store and check what they have there that is similar to this one but cheaper. I think that it has to be less than 50 to be worth the money but if I get more performance I dont mind spending a few extra $$$. The main thing is to have a composite video output or s-video, preferably with adapters for different kinds of tv inputs. This is the reason that led me to get this HD2400 in the first place.

Or maybe I will just try to get the tv-out bracket for my A8N-VM CSM mobo and then keep it real cheap.

Thread: ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro 256MB PCI Install

JSeymour is offlineGee! These Aren’t Roasted!

ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro 256MB PCI Install

  • Which driver do I want: The proprietary one or the open source one?
  • In either case: Are the latest & greatest drivers available from the «regular» repos, do I need to add a new/special/experimental/whatever repo to get the latest driver? Do I need to manually download and install from somewhere?
  • Any hints about a procedure to follow if Things Go Wrong?
  • Any hints on optimizing acceleration and 3D performance
  • Any hints about dual-monitor (aka: double-headed) operation?
  • I think I actually saw somebody have a problem with no sound after installing one of these. I think the suspicion was that the ATI card was «stealing» the audio from his sound card. How to prevent this? (I have a CL sound card that’s working quite well, thankyouverymuch.)

I’ve searched and searched, and found all of the above to be issues, or have been issues, at one-time-or-another. Would like to get the latest skinny on it all, if possible.

Answering my own questions, from stuph found elsewhere on the ‘net.

Since the open-source driver requires kernel 2.6.32 if you want 3D graphics acceleration with my card, it was either upgrade my kernel to an unsupported config or go with the proprietary driver. I chose the proprietary driver as the path of least resistance. It seems to be working well

The latest drivers are not to be found on the normal repos. You need xorg-edgers repos for the open-source drivers. You need to manually download and jump thru hoops for the latest proprietary drivers. N.B.: I found what was in the «restricted» repo to be working fine, so far.

There are three ways: Blacklist the ati sound driver. Alter the order of modules installs. (Those two will have system-wide effects.) Choose the source with the pulseaudio volume control.

I got the ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro 256MB PCI card installed last night. Works like a champ, so far, with the plain ol’ ATI proprietary drivers. I did not have a problem with the sound. I think that only happens with the open-source radeon or radeonhd drivers.

Btw: With the ATI Rage XL I was getting around 50-100 fps max. With the new card I’m getting more like 5000 fps

Re: ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro 256MB PCI Install

Just ordered one of these for a dell optiplex 755 after a failed attempt at installing a geforece 8400GS (needed 300watts, 755 only supplies 280).

I’m hoping for dual screen with compiz in ubuntu. Have you tried doing a dual screen setup with this card yet?
