(solved) H.265 and mplayer (smplayer)
Post by colibris79 » Thu Jun 09, 2016 7:29 pm
Hi,
I’ve tried to see h.265 in my smplayer but I can’t (in mplayer is not working either). I’ve installed the codecs and followed instructions given in other threats:
http://forum.smplayer.info/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8040 http://askubuntu.com/questions/362745/how-to-install-h-265-hevc-codec-on-ubuntu-linux https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=198824 https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=219860
How can I manage to make the h265 codec to work under mplayer (my default player)? It is supposed to work with h.265. I uninstalled mplayer2, installed mplayer 2:1.1. Installed the 265 codecs: gstreamer0.10-libde265 and gstreamer1.0-libde265.
Also installed the one for vlc: vlc-plugin-libde265
Mpv opens the h265 files (also vlc and totem after installing the codecs), but mplayer does not. Any idea why?
I am using Mint 17.3 (Ubuntu 14.04) , Smplayer 16.4
Besides the usage of the cpu while trying to open h.265 files with mplayer goes pretty high (around 80%) and I only can hear the sound, while with mpv it remains low and stable.
Also tried to play with mplayer through terminal with same result but the usage of the cpu is lower

By the way, expanding a bit.
Multimedia is as of today still rather a mess in Linux; «Videos» (a gstreamer based player), VLC and MPlayer respectively use, are and are three fully seperate backend players: players that themselves (de)code audio and video (and subtitles, and. ). Installing codecs for one doesn’t do anything for the others. «Xine» is another still somewhat relevant backend player at this level that you may encounter.
Gstreamer is a framework that decouples the player (such as «Videos») from the lower-level backend but is unfortunately part of the Gnome universe; the players that use it victim to the Gnome disease of removing functionality right past the point where hardly any user, any even remotely involved user at the very least, wants to use them. The same reason why we have Cinnamon and MATE. Up to this point in time gstreamer has as such been just one more entrance in the confusing mess of Linux multimedia rather than a solution. KDE has layered the Phonon level on top so as to isolate itself further from it. Its backends include all of the aforementioned: https://userbase.kde.org/Phonon#Backend_libraries.
Gstreamer and VLC are as of today and in that order most relevant but I frequently use mplayer (and mencoder) as well. Certainly one could not accuse it of exposing too few options — some of which you at times just need or want. But if you do, you need to be aware that it is its own private universe.

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.
It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run » inxi -Fxzd » from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.
These are the instructions, that I use for this, perhaps these will help you.
If you have not installed «ubuntu-restricted-extras», mencoder, melt, from the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM), then I would recommend that you do.
Having a current version of «FFmpeg», is a good thing to do as well.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mc3man/trusty-media
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ffmpeg
SMPlayer Sees New Release ‘15.11’ With MPV Support, Install via PPA
To setup MPV as base for SMplayer head over to tool bar Under «Options» menu select «Preferences» then under «General» write /usr/bin/mpv in MPlayer/mpv executable field,
http://www.noobslab.com/2015/09/smplaye . h-mpv.html
Unlike other players SMplayer doesn’t require you to install codecs to play something because it carries its own, all required codecs within itself.[/u][/color] This is the first release which now supports MPV and some other features such as MPRIS v2 Support, new theme, 3D stereo filter and more. I recommend reading both web links below.
Web Upd8 — excellent Linux website — This article is for SMplayer & MPV

Noobslab — another excellent Linux website — This article on SMplayer and MPV

To install these using the PPA method, open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rvm/smplayer
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mc3man/mpv-tests
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mpv smplayer smtube youtube-dl
or for added smplayer themes and skins
sudo apt-get install mpv smplayer smtube smplayer-themes smplayer-skins youtube-dl

Thanks both.
I have switched back to mplayer2 (since it was not working well with a couple of features in smplayer), which is not compatible with h.265. I am already using the last version of smplayer. Will update ffmpeg.
Mpv right now is my option to go to watch h.265 (either inside smplayer or with the mpv player). Vlc or Totem work too, so it is not so big deal, but I wanted to know what was going on with my mplayer. Let’s see how this goes.

HEVC codec after LM 21 upgrade.
Post by stretch611 » Thu Sep 22, 2022 11:06 pm
I upgraded two separate machines from Mint 20.3 to Mint 21. (A Thinkpad Laptop and a DIY Desktop.) I did upgrade both, not a fresh install.
Since the upgrade, I have issues with the HEVC codec. I believe it is limited to 10bit color videos but I am not sure (and honestly do not know which are 10bit or not unless the filename labels it as such; which obviously is not a reliable indicator.)
These are videos that where working in VLC prior to the upgrade and now when playing the videos the hue or the gamma layer (forgive me I am not an artist or technical A/V analyst) is off. Sometimes it looks fine other times the whole picture gets a green or pink tint. Sometimes it starts in the upper left hand corner of the screen and only corrupts a portion of the screen.
Here are the facts that I have seen.
It happens in both VLC and Celluloid.
It never happened on either computer before the upgrade.
It only appears to affect HEVC/265 encoding. h264 encoded videos seem to work fine.
Now, I say it never happened before. on this scale, no. But the resulting output looks like what some videos with corrupted streams look like. (I tried to attach a screenshot as an example, but was told the file was too big.) It is pretty consistent on my hevc files where I never had problems before with the same exact files before the upgrade.
My assumption is that this has to due with something in the decoding layer. I have not tried to play with any of the advance options in VLC yet so I am wondering if a default in the rendering choice might have changed if not the underlying software. (But it happens in Celluloid as well, so I am guessing it is more likely a system library instead of specific application software.)
