Hotspot Shield VPN on Linux Mint?

Post by Murlikat » Wed Sep 14, 2016 4:35 pm

I was wondering if there’s a way to use Hotspot Shield VPN on Linux? I have switched my OS over to Linux Mint. Full installed, no dual install or virtualboxes here! There is no Linux software for that VPN though. only Windows and Mac.

Does anyone know a way to use another program to make it work? Saw a post from years ago saying OpenVPN can be configured to do it.

Thanks very much in advance!

so it’s another Free VPN that doesn’t directly support Linux Systems.

so — — try using the add-on version, to see if that works.

something that has already been mentioned, on other threads,
is that Free VPN is not always the best option,
— sometimes, it does pay, to Pay a Little,
or risk them selling your private details.

Reason: it’s still a Windows Based program — — which Won’t Run on LinuxMint ! !

Hotspot shield can be very erratic when it comes to connecting. I eventually replaced it with Hola! which seems to do the same job with much less fuss.

These free browser add-ons are not trustworthy for purposes of privacy / data security but can work quite well if all that’s wanted is to avoid geographical restrictions — it’s trial and error to see what works region to region. From Canada both Hola and the built-in Opera VPN work well to access US media sites that are otherwise blocked.

TRUST BUT VERIFY any advice from anybody, including me. Mint/Ubuntu user since 10.04 LTS. LM20 64 bit XFCE (Dell 1520). Dual boot LM20 XFCE / Win7 (Lenovo desktop and Acer netbook). Testing LM21.1 Cinnamon and XFCE Live for new Lenovo desktop.

I know we are discussing Hotspot Shield in this thread , but Hola VPN has come up .

I urge everybody reading this to avoid Hola like the plague .

Some of their business practices have been truly shocking , here’s an example :-
http://www.zdnet.com/article/hola-vpn-s . ers-claim/
and here —
http://adios-hola.org/

There have been valid comments made on this forum about free VPN services and trustworthiness , but there are still a few good ones IMO .
Windscribe , based in Canada offers a free service capped at 10 GB per month ( easily extended to 50 GB ) .
and for folks who only need to use VPN occasionally , Security KISS has a good quality free service.

I’ve been testing a large range of VPNs over the past few years and those two have impressed me , as far as ( limited ) free VPNs go .

World’s fastest VPN, verified by experts

Most of the leading VPN providers all use the same antiquated open source technology. Hotspot Shield is different. We built our own patented Hydra protocol from the ground up, and it delivers a far more consistent VPN connection — not to mention speeds over 2x faster than the nearest competition when connected to long-distance servers. In fact, Speedtest found Hotspot Shield actually increased download speed by more than 26.2% compared to when not using a VPN, while all other providers decreased speed by at least 42.5%.
