How to install Ubuntu without a USB drive?

I installed Fedora 34 about a week ago and found out that most of the apps used .deb which Fedora doesn’t support, so I was thinking about switching to Ubuntu, BUT I lost my USB drive, so does anyone know how to install Ubuntu 21.04 without USB drive? My laptop uses UEFI, so unetbootin won’t work.

You can alter grub so it boots a ISO from a drive on the system (I use it in QA-testing on a device without working USB ports). Note: I didn’t QA-test Ubuntu 21.04 on that device, and I know changes have been occurring in recent ISOs with live boots, so I can’t guarantee it’ll work, but I still believe it would

How did you install Fedora? If you have an optical drive, then you could always burn the Ubuntu installation ISO to a DVD. It’s much slower, but it’ll give you an opportunity to relive the glorious 90s 😉

Booting ISO from Fedora GRUB2 Menu

The method on this page should work for booting an Ubuntu ISO from the Fedora GRUB bootloader 20.04 booting .iso from GRUB menu No need for a USB here.

To reiterate:

Add the following menuentry to /etc/grub.d/40_custom:

Where (hdX,Y) is the disk and partition the ISO is on, for example /dev/sda3 would be (hd0,3) . [path] is the path to the folder the ISO file is in, and [isoname] is the name of the ISO, for example /isos/ubuntu-20.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso is used if the Ubuntu ISO is located in a folder named isos on the root partition. rmmod tpm is only needed when booting in UEFI mode.

How to Use Unetbootin for Installing Ubuntu without USB

Here, we have two options to install an operating system. You can choose a distribution and its version from the list provided by the UNetbootin utility itself. Then, UNetbootin will download it for you.

Alternatively, if your desired distribution is not available in the list provided by the UNetbootin, you can manually give an ISO file to load as well.

After selecting the distribution from the list provided by the UNetbootin or providing an ISO yourself, select the installation type: USB Drive or Hard Disk.

Since we want to install Ubuntu without USB, so we will choose the Hard Disk type:

Selecting the Hard Disk will copy all the files from the ISO file to the drive you selected and add a bootloader.

Select the Drive and click OK to begin the installation.

The rest of the work is up to UNetbootin, and it will let you know when the process is done.

Once the installation is completed, press the Exit button, and reboot the system.

After rebooting, the UNetbootin boot entry will appear:

Choose the new entry, boot into the Ubuntu operating system,

Start installing the Ubuntu Operating system:

The installation process of Ubuntu will be the same as we used to install it usually.

If you want to install it along with the primary operating system, make sure to create a separate partition for the installation of Ubuntu. Another thing that you need to care about is to choose the “install the Ubuntu operating system alongside the primary operating system” option while installing Ubuntu. Otherwise, you will end up formatting all your data saved in the selected partition.

How can I install Ubuntu without CD and USB?

This is not really a spare system , lol. This is my school laptop , wich had ubuntu before windows 7.

For BIOS devices:

To install Ubuntu without CD/DVD or USB pendrive, follow these steps:

1. Download Unetbootin from here.
2. Run Unetbootin.
3. Now, from the drop-down menu under Type: select Hard Disk.
4. Next select the Diskimage. Browse to the directory where you downloaded the iso file of Ubuntu.
5. Press OK.
6. Next when you reboot, you will get a menu like this:
7. Select Unetbootin and you will get the «Try» or «Install» option there.
8. Finally, you can install your version of Ubuntu alongside Windows.

For UEFI devices:

• First, download rEFInd.
• Then, extract it.
• Now, follow the below steps to install rEFInd [source] , so that, you have a boot menu to boot to Ubuntu Live environment. Summary of the installation process given in the source is as belows:
• Open cmd with Administrator privileges.
• Then,

xcopy /E refind S:\EFI\refind\ 

rename refind.conf-sample refind.conf 

bcdedit /set path \EFI\refind\refind_x64.efi 

Select your last partition.

Right-click on it and from the context menu select Resize/Move partition.

From the size shown beside Partition Size minus 4096 MB (to mimic a 4GB pendrive).

Press tab and the rest will be auto-completed.

Select the newly created partition and right-click on it. Select Create Partition from context menu.

In this window, select FAT32 as the File System. Click on OK. Finally, click on Apply (present at the top-left of the window).

Right-click on the 4 GB partition and from the context menu select Delete Partition.

Right-click on the partition above the Unallocated partition and select Resize/Move Partition from the context menu.

Extend the bar to the extreme right by dragging the button.

Click on OK. Finally, click on Apply (present at the top-left of the window).
