I followed above steps and tried compiling my .proto file with —python_out.
If it try to import generated python module, I am getting following error:

Did someone see this kind of error before ? any idea how I can resolve this ?
Official UNIX install instructions are here: README.md.

You also need the Python bindings. To install them simply do
You’re missing ./configure after ./autogen.sh .

How to install Protobuf on Ubuntu
Protocol Buffer, abbreviated as Protobuf, is an open source library developed by Google that allows to serialize or deserialize structured data. It is used to communicate with one another over a network and to store data when building applications.
In this article we are going to install Protobuf on Ubuntu (Linux OS) by below mentioned methods, you can follow any of these methods for successful installation of Protobuf.
Installation of Protobuf Using Command Line on Ubuntu:
We can install Protobuf by giving commands on Ubuntu terminal:
Step1: Update the Packages : Firstly, you need to update all the previous packages installed on your system:
Uninstall Protobuf from Ubuntu system using terminal
Run the below mentioned command to remove protobuf-compiler installed from above method:
$ sudo apt-get remove protobuf-compiler
Installation of Protobuf Using Ubuntu Software Center
We can also install Protobuf using another method, by directly installing it through Ubuntu software Manager. Follow the step below for successful installation:
Step1: Login to Ubuntu System, open the Ubuntu software Manager by double clicking on the icon.
Step 3: Now click on “Protobuf” option shown in the list below:
Step 5: After you click on install, an authentication tab will be opened, you have to enter your login password there and click on “Authenticate”:
Step 7: After Protobuf is installed, you can check it by going to installed tab on Ubuntu software, it will appear in list of apps if installed successfully, as it is shown below:
Now search for “Protobuf” from the list of apps and click on “Remove” button in front of it as shown below:
And now protobuf will be uninstalled successfully and no longer exist in the list.
Conclusion
Protobuf is a free and cross platform library used for serialization and deserialization of structured data. In this write up we discussed two methods of installation of Protobuf on Ubuntu system and also its uninstallation. One method is using the command-line on Ubuntu and the other one is using Ubuntu Software Manager, you can follow any of these, you find it easy.

Protocol Buffer Compiler Installation
While not mandatory, gRPC applications often leverage Protocol Buffers for service definitions and data serialization. Most of the example code from this site uses version 3 of the protocol buffer language (proto3) .
The protocol buffer compiler, protoc , is used to compile .proto files, which contain service and message definitions. Choose one of the methods given below to install protoc .
Install using a package manager
You can install the protocol compiler, protoc , with a package manager under Linux or macOS using the following commands.
Warning
Check the version of protoc (as indicated below) after installation to ensure that it is sufficiently recent. The versions of protoc installed by some package managers can be quite dated.
Installing from pre-compiled binaries, as indicated in the next section, is the best way to ensure that you’re using the latest release of protoc .
$ apt install -y protobuf-compiler $ protoc --version # Ensure compiler version is 3+
$ brew install protobuf $ protoc --version # Ensure compiler version is 3+
Install pre-compiled binaries (any OS)
To install the latest release of the protocol compiler from pre-compiled binaries, follow these instructions:
- Manually download from github.com/google/protobuf/releases the zip file corresponding to your operating system and computer architecture ( protoc—.zip ), or fetch the file using commands such as the following:
$ PB_REL="https://github.com/protocolbuffers/protobuf/releases" $ curl -LO $PB_REL/download/v3.15.8/protoc-3.15.8-linux-x86_64.zip
$ unzip protoc-3.15.8-linux-x86_64.zip -d $HOME/.local
$ export PATH="$PATH:$HOME/.local/bin"
Other installation options
If you’d like to build the protocol compiler from sources, or access older versions of the pre-compiled binaries, see Download Protocol Buffers .
