How to install sql developer on linux

bmaupin / install-oracle-sql-developer.md

@Grelo4ka I just noticed that I wrote «Ubuntu/Debian» in the description of this gist. I guess I assumed it would work for Debian since Ubuntu is based on Debian, but I’ve not tested it on Debian. I should probably remove that 🙂

On the other hand, it looks like Ubuntu 20.04 is based on Debian 11? So maybe that’s not the problem:

$ lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS Release: 20.04 Codename: focal $ cat /etc/debian_version bullseye/sid

I used these steps successfully last week to install SQL Developer 21.2.1 on Ubuntu 20.04; I guess you could try installing an older version of SQL Developer to see if it works.

If you figure out the problem with the newer versions feel free to leave a comment and I can update this gist.

I am also facing same error while installing sqldeveloper-21.4.0-346.2239.noarch.rpm on debian 11.

 error: debian/sqldeveloper/usr/local/bin/sqldeveloper is not a directory make: *** [debian/rules:7: binary] Error 25

I have also tried to install sqldeveloper-19.1.0-094.2042.noarch but it also gives same error.

I am facing quite the same issue trying to install sqldeveloper-21.4.2-018.1706.noarch.rpm. It fails with both alien or rpm commands.
Here is the trace:

warning: RPM v3 packages are deprecated: sqldeveloper-21.4.2-018.1706.noarch

Did someone figured out how to deal with it ?

Installation Notes

This archive includes both SQL Developer and an embedded copy of the Java 11 Development Kit (JDK). Simply extract the zip to a fresh directory and run the sqldeveloper.exe in the top directory. The EXE is configured to run the embedded JDK by default. Note: the Windows EXE requires a MSVCR100.dll to run. Most computers will already have this file and in the Windows PATH. However, if the first copy of the file found by the EXE is a 32-bit copy of the DLL, then SQL Developer will fail to start. You can fix this by copying a 64-bit version of the DLL into the BIN directory or updating your OS PATH such that a 64 bit copy of the DLL is found first.

Windows 32-bit/64-bit

This archive. will work on a 32 or 64 bit Windows OS. The bit level of the JDK you install will determine if it runs as a 32 or 64 bit application. This download does not include the required Oracle Java JDK. You will need to install it if it’s not already on your machine. We officially support Oracle JDK 11. If SQL Developer cannot find Java on your machine, it will prompt you for the path for a JDK home. This only occurs the first time you launch SQL Developer. A valid Java Home on Windows will be similar to C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-11.0.11

Mac OS X and ARM64 Installation Notes

This download includes the Oracle JDK. SQL Developer supports Oracle JDK 11.

To install and run
  • Download the file for OS X or ARM64 on the Downloads page
  • Extract zip file
  • Run application

RPM for Linux Installation Notes

This download does not include the JDK. SQL Developer supports Oracle JDK 11.

To install and run
  • Ensure you have a JDK installed, if not, download here
  • rpm -Uhv sqldeveloper-(build number)-1.noarch.rpm (install the package)
  • cd sqldeveloper (go to sqldeveloper folder)
  • ./sqldeveloper.sh (run sqldeveloper.sh file)
  • You will be prompted to enter a jdk path. (ie usr/java/jdk-11.0.11)
  • SQL Developer will automatically launch once jdk location is provided

How to Install SQL Developer on Linux (Red Hat, Fedora, Oracle, Centos, Rocky Linux)

SQL Developer is a free and integrated development tool that you can use to develop and manage Oracle Database. It even works with cloud databases as well. This tool offers all the features developers need to design, develop, and debug PL/SQL applications. This is a cross-platform application which means it is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and other operating systems. You only need the latest and supported JDK installed. In many cases, there is no need to install, simply download, extract the files, and use them.

Below are some of the core features of this tool,

  • Supports Oracle Database, versions 11gR2, 12c, 18c, 19c, 20c, Oracle Cloud, and On-Premises
  • Query, load, and extract data
  • Easy to install, no Oracle Client required

In this article, let’s see how to install SQL Developer on Linux operating systems.

1. Install the latest Supported Java (JDK)

As mentioned above, you need java installed on your system. You can check it using the command given below.

$ java -version bash: java: command not found.

If you get bash: java: command not found… error that means Java is not installed.

So you have to install JDK first. Here, you can either go with Oracle JDK or Open JDK. That should not matter. I am going to use OpenJDK.

Run the below command on Red hat, Oracle, Fedora, and Rocky Linux to install OpenJDK 11.

$ sudo dnf install java-11-openjdk java-11-openjdk-devel

When the installation is complete, again check the Java version.

$ java -version openjdk version "11.0.14" 2022-01-18 LTS OpenJDK Runtime Environment 18.9 (build 11.0.14+9-LTS) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM 18.9 (build 11.0.14+9-LTS, mixed mode, sharing)

2. Download SQL Developer for Linux

Here, you will find the download links for Windows 32/64 bit, Mac, Linux, and Other Platforms. We are interested in the Linux RPM Platform.

Next, accept the terms and conditions, enter the username and password of your free oracle account and your download should start.

Accept terms and download SQL Developer

Once the download is complete. Go to the Downloads folder.

Run the command rpm -Uhv sqldeveloper-(build number)-1.noarch.rpm.

$ sudo rpm -Uhv sqldeveloper-21.4.2-018.1706.noarch.rpm

install SQL Developer Linux

This installs SQL Developer under /opt folder.

SQL Developer Installation Folder

Either go to activities and search for SQL developer or use the below commands to launch it.

This starts the SQLDeveloper. The first time, it may ask you to enter the JDK path. In my case, it did not ask. Enter the path /usr/bin or usr/java/jdk1.8.0_181 wherever you have Java installed.

It also asks to import the preference.

Import SQL Developer Preference

Click Yes or No depending on if you have another SQL developer installed.

SQL Developer Dashboard Linux

These installation steps are performed on Rocky Linux. You can use the same to install SQL Developer on other rpm-based distros like Red Hat, Oracle, Fedora, CentOS, etc.
