Hp probook 450 linux

Linux introductions, tips and tutorials. Questions are encouraged. Any distro, any platform! Explicitly noob-friendly.

I installed Arch Linux on my desktop recently without major issues, it’s now a dual boot system with windows (to game without issues). I wanted to do the same on my laptop, but this is a completely different thing. Installing GRUB gives errors, and all kinds of issues show up.

If I install Arch Everything goes fine, until I try to install GRUB so I can actually do some booting. This gives me an error:

«ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo grub-install —boot-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sda Installing for i386-pc platform. grub-install: warning: this GPT partition label contains no BIOS Boot Partition; embedding won’t be possible. grub-install: warning: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged.. grub-install: error: will not proceed with blocklists.»

I read somewhere that I just need to add a 2MB partition with the grub-boot flag or something like that, so I did that and GRUB actually installed but when rebooting I just got into windows 8 (the pre-installed OS)

I also read that the probook always boots a single file that can’t be changed, which is owned by windows (I guess this is hard-coded to this version of the BIOS? I haven’t a clue, I’m quite good with PC’s, but I never really do things on the BIOS and OS side of things)

Anyways, I’m now in the position where installing GRUB is a bit sketchy, and after installation it just boots to windows.

I got GRUB to work, now I’m in the reverse position where I need to add windows to GRUB, but as far as I’m aware that’s easier and I will call it progress.

Apparently I have overwritten the efi file used to boot windows. How do I boot windows now? Did I fuck up?

Apparently Windows keeps a backup of this file but loading it gives an error. I’m starting to think I should start over with Windows or commit to using linux. Does anyone have an idea how to fix the situation?

I reinstalled windows, which also placed an entire new bootloader in /EFI/Microsoft, which I could then add to GRUB.

I originally hoped I could find this bootloader someplace else, but saw no other option.

I do have a few leftover options that don’t do anything (I have 3 windows systems?) but it works now, so it doesn’t really matter to me.
