You shouldn’t need any extra drivers. I just tethered via usb, my HTC Desire to the system I’m using, and the connection showed up right away in network manager, just select the connection, and you should be good to go.

I didn’t see where you mentioned what OS version your HTC phone is running; mine is early Ice Cream Sandwich. Later ICS and Jellybean changed file formats, causing issues. If Ubuntu doesn’t recognize your phone by just plugging-in via USB, perhaps this can help:
Also, remember that on your phone you must select ‘Mount as a USB drive’ or similar instead of ‘Charge only’ when plugged into a PC. This will be under ‘Settings’.
