Introduction
Hyperbola is under continual development. The current release name is “Milky Way”. It is also (currently) known by the codename “stable”.
Each version also corresponds to a set of named software repositories (at least one per CPU architecture).
At any given time, there is one stable release of Hyperbola, which has the support of the Hyperbola security team. When a new stable version is released, the security team will usually cover it to debug packages, maintain patches imported from Debian and evaluate security threats through the HyperTask/Security mailing lists to help the Hyperbola development team. Only stable is recommended for use.
There are also a main development repository testing maintained by the Hyperbola development team which is continually updated during the development of the next stable release. The latest packages arrive in testing (which always has the codename “White Hole”).
Choosing
End users should generally choose to run either stable or testing. Stable is recommended for applications requiring stability and security (servers, firewalls etc) and is also recommended for those who are new to GNU/Linux. Testing is recommended for slightly more advanced users who are capable of reporting and fixing bugs to help Hyperbola.

A fully free, stable, secure, simple, lightweight and long-term support distribution
You’ve reached the website for Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre operating system. The Hyperbola Project is a community driven effort to provide a fully free (as in freedom) operating system that is stable, secure, simple, lightweight that tries to Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS) under a Long Term Support (LTS) way.
Derived from Arch plus stability and security from Debian, Hyperbola provides packages from it that meet the GNU Free System Distribution Guidelines (GNU FSDG) and replacements for the packages that don’t meet this requirement. Packages are provided for the i686 and x86_64 architectures.
Our community is friendly and helpful. Please hop on IRC channel and check out our forums and mailing lists to get your feet wet. Also glance through our wiki if you want to learn more about Hyperbola.

HyperbolaBSD is an operating-system and not a system-distribution
While we are nearing now the first states for HyperbolaBSD compiling the kernel and first work will go into the userland, we like to inform that HyperbolaBSD is a complete operating-system and not a distribution / system-distribution. We will remove at an upcoming point many more packages from extra-repository, leaving only most important applications, window-managers and more. Others being added will be left out, removed and saved within an own ports-tree for the future, such as many BSD descendant projects, for example OpenBSD, NetBSD and FreeBSD.
That maybe not the vision many have or had, but it is the point given for a further difference: HyperbolaBSD is a free and libre system, but not distributing more and more packages. So please keep an eye at the repositories to come, especially when it comes towards version 0.4.4 as we will do those steps starting there.
For more details look also at the roadmap.
Now we won’t implement more packages besides the planned for release 0.4.3. If you like, please prepare a port on your own sharing for the community. It can be later part for the ports-tree. Please always remember: HyperbolaBSD will be a new BSD descendant system project, not a system-distribution any longer.
Happy anniversary and donated hardware for Hyperbola
Hyperbola is now official 6 years working as a free and libre system-distribution and project. We are happy with all the good progress made and besides that Hyperbola is also here to stay: On 15th April of 2017 the project and the idea behind was created. And on 13th July of 2017 the official v0.1 of our Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre was released. But it was not stopped there: On 15th October 2017 v0.2 found its way to be released. And after further work on 9th September 2019 our release v0.3 was final. With our release v0.4 .
Donated hardware for HyperbolaBSD-development
We are happy to announce that we have received a laptop from our team-member and founder Gaming4JC. The ThinkPad X230 will be used for the further development of HyperbolaBSD.
Milky Way v0.4.2 install medium release
We hereby announce a new revision of Hyperbola live image for Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre. With this new version we have completed the support for runit as system for services and initialization. Furthermore we have fixed, updated and added many packages.
Download information can be found here.
Bluetooth-support not included for more security
With the release of Milky Way v0.4 we have completely removed the support for bluetooth within Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre and also don’t plan to include it in HyperbolaBSD in the future. The reasoning is pure focussed on security-issues bluetooth has.
