Debian User Forums

I’m a beginner and I try to install Debian on my All-in-one. It have a Intel Chipset with Intel GMA 3150 Graphic Driver.
I search on intel website and i found this http://intellinuxgraphics.org/2012.02.html but I don’t know how to install this driver.
I need this driver because now I don’t have graphics acceleration.

Can you help me? Thank you.

Ensure the package xserver-xorg-video-intel is installed and the correct modules are loaded. Also open a terminal post the output of:

If it says command not found you need synaptic or apt to install the package mesa-utils.

It appears it is using software rendering. The only thing I can think of is the intel drivers are either not installed or blacklisted. What is the output of:

apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-intel

Edit you might want to try installing the xorg and kernel from backports: http://x.debian.net/reference/squeeze-backports.html

Установка драйвера Intel в Ubuntu

Intel

Ubuntu

sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-intel

sudo apt install mesa-utils

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers

Driver update/installation Intel GMA500

Post by freakinnewb » Sun May 07, 2017 6:02 am

Hey, so i couldn’t find a post which had the same issue, if there is sorry. So my problem is my Mint 18.1 version 4.4.0-53-generic i686 (32-bit) starts in software rendering mode and so far i couldn’t find out how to update/install my driver. I’m using an benq Joybook lite u121 eco with the chipset Intel GMA500. The standard driver installing thing in the welcome screen was no help(don’t really know if it’s supposed to help in that way). Thanks in advance

Oh dear . that’s the infamous Poulsbo graphics. My netbook has the similar Intel Cedarview graphics chipset. These were a couple of those rare cases where Intel outsourced the graphics chip. And the mfr (PowerVR) has always refused to release the source code. Hence there is no 3D hardware accelerated video and it’s extremely unlikely there will ever be. The odds are between slim and zero.

Now let’s see what you have exactly . copy/paste this into the terminal and copy/paste the text output back here:

And I hope like hell you didn’t install the Cinnamon version. It requires 3D hardware acceleration just by itself. I booted a live boot iso of Mint Cinnamon from a USB stick once just for a laugh. Not only was Cinnamon running in software rendering model, it was using 47-48% of the CPU with no apps running. Just Cinnamon.

I was lucky because I knew what to expect and my netbook is just for running around with. I’ve seen many threads started by Poulsbo/Cedarview users who thought they were going to be able to play big 1080p video files, and they won’t do that satisfactorily.

Bottom line is there are no drivers other than the one you have and there aren’t going to be any. Any references you may find on the web to Poulsbo/Cedarview linux drivers are out of date and hence won’t work, didn’t work that well anyway, and what they did was moved into the Linux kernel years ago. Hence they’re useless.

If you do have Cinnamon (or KDE) they’re too much for your hardware. Don’t just install another desktop environment. That’lll screw up things more. I’d advise a clean reinstall of Mint Xfce after backing up your data of course.

When you do, disable ALL desktop compositing. Basically, just forget eye candy on that hardware. The easiest way to do that in Xfce is settings > desktop settings > window manager. By default the item selected in the popup window is ‘Xfwm + Compositing’. Click that and change it to ‘Xfwm4’.

If you want to play videos from files I’d recommend installing a good GUI front end for mplayer, which is about the best performing, light media player I know of. I use SMplayer on my laptop, which does have decently supported video, and Gnome Mplayer on my netbook. It doesn’t have the features of SMplayer but it’s bery light anf fast and works a LOT better in something like a Poulsbo/Cedarview netbook. The package name is gnome-mplayer and it’s in the repos.

You can get better performance using mplayer from the termiinal but I had enough terminal usage in the 80s. I’m not afraid of CLI but I wouldn’t play videos that way.

Well, it’s much as I suspected, plus that’s a 32 bit single core CPU.

The heaviest Mint edition I’d recommend would be the Xfce one. LMDE is lighter but it’s Debian based and isn’t really suitable for beginners.

I’d also recommend trying a lighter distro, eg. Peppermint.

When you read all that stuff ab out how Linux can reinvigorate old hardware, well, that’s true. But it does not apply to all distros, desktop environments, or even app software.
