Intel HD Graphics 4400 fully supported?

Hi guys,
I am new Mint user and I am glad I tried Mint (Cinnamon) Love it so far. I have installed VMware and I am not getting error «3D support is available from the host». I am using Aspire S7-392-9890 that is supposed to have Intel HD Graphics 4400. I really need to enable 3D support for VMware machines but I have no clue how.
Do I need different driver or is it just matter of making setting changes? I’ve tried to install «Intel graphics installer» but I am getting error that this distro is not supported. I am new to linux so I might be missing something simple.

Please help me out here.. Thank you. Charles

Haswell graphics have supported since 3.11 kernel I believe. I use Ivybridge with no issues (HD 4000).

I can help you with the intel graphics installer

gksudo gedit /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=13.10 DISTRIB_CODENAME=saucy DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="LinuxMint 16 Petra"

— the last line has no affect, it makes no difference what DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION says

But if you use LM17 it needs to be this

DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=14.04 DISTRIB_CODENAME=trusty DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 14.04 LTS"

If the installer ever says distribution not supported again, you will have to change the lsb-release file again- I think it gets changed on boot

Thank you. I was able to run Intel graphics installer thanks to your suggestions but still can’t get it work. See attached picture. What would be next step? Anyone? I don’t know why vmware is not picking up 3d hardware acceleration.

It looks like OpenGL is there.

Are you able to use graphics accel in other apps, like desktop effects or XBMC? Sounds like a Vmware issue. I Use vBox on Ividbridge with 3d guest graphics enabled.

Подскажите есть какие то варианты заставить обрабатывать 4к видео видеокартой а не CPU в Firefox 102 ?

Завтра уже Firefox 110 выйдет. Зачем юзать такую старую версию? Предлагаю обновиться до актуальной версии и возможно — проблема решится.

Так а в чем проблема, ограничить выдачу роликов только этим кодеком браузерным расширением «h264ify or enhanced-h264ify»…

ТС хочет смотреть youtube в 4k, а youtube такие видео отдаёт только в VP9 и AV1.

Да, перепроверил на нескольких видео, крайнее качество с h264 это 1080p. )

Интересно, а mpv —hwdec=auto тоже ‘спасует’ с 4k?
Как то я раньше не обращал внимание на нюанс, что некоторые видеокарты (встроенные) избирательны в плане декодируемых кодеков, а ютуб требует поддержки vp9 для ≥2k.

В браузерах есть дополнительные издержки, причём в Firefox они довольно значительные. Так что вполне может случиться так, что для проигрывания через mpv ещё хватает вычислительных ресурсов, а для проигрывания через Firefox уже нет.

hwdec тут, правда, совсем не при чём, потому что волшебства в mpv нет, и он не сможет использовать аппаратный декодер, которого нет.

Что мы видим? У интелов поддержка VP9 начинается с Apollo Lake, у NVIDIA она есть практически везде, где есть поддержка HEVC, а вот AMD его поддерживает только с 2018 года (UVD в VP9 аппаратно не умеют вообще).
А вот AV1, дорогие друзья, поддерживается только чипами, выпущенными не ранее 2020 года.

Т.е., хотим 4k — обновляем железо. Иначе, довольствуемся 1080p.

Intel Haswell HD Graphics 4400 Are Great On Linux

At Phoronix we have delivered a ton of Intel Haswell coverage and when it comes to the much-improved graphics capabilities on these latest-generation processors we have tested the HD Graphics 4600 that’s commonly found on the Core i5/i7 desktop CPUs and the high-end Iris Pro 5200 graphics found on a few processors. For low-end Intel Core i3 «Haswell» CPUs there is also the HD Graphics 4400 model, which is what we’re testing today. The Intel HD Graphics 4400 comparison is being compared on Ubuntu Linux to a variety of other Intel Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, and Haswell graphics cores.

In preparation for the daily and per-commit benchmarking of Mesa, I purchased an Intel Core i3 4130 «Haswell» processor. I’ll feature a review of the Intel Core i3 4130 CPU on its own under Linux in the coming days while today I’m focusing just on the HD Graphics 4400 performance. The Intel Core i3 4130 is a dual-core processor with Hyper Threading that runs at 3.4GHz without any Turbo Boost. The i3-4130 was released in September and features 3MB of Smart Cache, and has a TDP of 54 Watts. The Core i3 4130 also shares other common Haswell features like being fabbed at a 22nm process, SSE 4.2 and AVX2 instruction set extensions, etc.

The Intel HD Graphics 4400 core has a base frequency of 350MHz and a maximum frequency of 1.15GHz. The HD Graphics 4400 can drive up to three displays simultaneously permitting the used motherboard has enough connections. For the initial HD Graphics 4400 Linux benchmarks, the Core i3 4130 was compared to various other Intel graphics solutions on Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, and Haswell generations hardware. The graphics processors being tested today include:

— Intel Core i3 2120 — Sandy Bridge — HD Graphics 2000
— Intel Core i5 3470 — Ivy Bridge — HD Graphics 2500
— Intel Core i5 2500K — Sandy Bridge — HD Graphics 3000
— Intel Core i7 3770K — Ivy Bridge — HD Graphics 4000
— Intel Core i3 4130 — Haswell — HD Graphics 4400
— Intel Core i7 4770K — Haswell — HD Graphics 4600

The motherboards had to be switched out between the Haswell and Sandy/Ivy Bridge processors but the rest of the components remained the same with an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD and 16GB of RAM. The software stack was comprised of Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit with the Linux 3.11 kernel, Mesa 9.2.0, xf86-video-intel 2.21.14, X.Org Server 1.14.2.901, and GCC 4.8.
